GDT: Buffalo Sabres at Ottawa Senators - 7PM - TSN5 / RDS2 - 4th and Final Sabre Rattling Rigmarole with the JBD Juggernauts (no Brady)

For people saying stu is a great playmaker. Or that chemistry can get so good with him that there would be tap ins for his linemates.

He should have shot this. But batherson is wide open lol. And stutzle puts it in his skates.

He is a great playmaker.

This place gets ridiculous after a loss. He's 23 and has put up three straight seasons with over 50 assists.

I’m not saying we played well against Boston I actually think we were quite bad against Boston. Thank goodness for swayman

Right we’re not contenders. Every contender in the league has at least 2 players better offensively than our best offensive player.

It’s not that they didn’t built them to not be a contender. They built them for grinding hockey. Forechecking and working along the boards and d men that can absorb a bunch of pressure and be physical.

They didn’t draft Boucher Greig kleven Roger Ostapchuk nordberg and Eliasson to ping around the puck and skate around opposing players.

It was atrocious drafting. And we are where we are.

Yeah...just not sure how much time we want to invest in a core that is very limited in its potential...is it wasted years?

Luck is really favoring this Team that there is no other bad Team playing decent enough to take our WC spot to save us from the embarrassment to play against Teams like Panthers, Capitals, Lightening or even the Leaf's

This has to be one of the most mediocre Teams to ever make the playoffs. The Eastern Conference is just atrociously bad this season

Well. I dono about wasted. We showed we could play with the.Best of them.

Denton find a way to get a top line super star tho

I mean if we spend 5 years with a core that their potential is winning a round...is it better to work towards building a better core earlier rather than pushing this core for as long as we can?

Like, if you get dealt a shitty hand in poker, is the better strategy to try really hard to maximize that hand, or is it better to fold and wait for a better hand?

I know strategies for both, but with a weak hand, its a lot about persuading others in thinking you have a better hand than you do. That isn't exactly a worthwhile strategy in the NHL though lol.

5 of the worst teams in the NHL are from the western conference.

Well we can’t just restart rebuilds all the time. And there’s no guarantee we get insane players.

In 2020 we had picks 1 and 2. We ended up with picks 3 and 5 and STILL got the two best players in the draft lol. Yet… we haven’t really reached some elite level. Sometimes your guys are your guys

I think we can beat multiple teams in the east in a playoff series. Win a cup? No. But look at cup winners lol. Florida Vegas Tampa….. we ain’t them

We'd probably be elite if we didn't use the draft capital we did on Duchene, Debrincat, and Chychrun. That's a lot of value in our rebuild that just left for essentially nothing. Add that value to our existing roster and we're in a very good spot.

Dorion F'd us. Steve is doing a hell of a job with patching what was left. I still don't like our core as it is though, it's too talent thin.

You can also retool. You don't need to rebuild a rebuild.

You can identify "these are your 6 core guys...we like 2 of them...4 we can do 1 for 1 trades for someone we prefer"

I'm thinking a retool.

Like if we decide "Chabot as your #2 isn't something you can win with" is it better to ship him out rather than hold onto him until his 30s and he dwindles away?

I'm just using Chabot as an example...I'm not against him.

Like, maybe a couple more Norris style trades to get the core staios wants rather than pushing the core dorion built.

Ya know?

Exactly...which is why I'm wondering if it would make sense to build something similar to what dorion built but WITHOUT pissing away first round picks every year for upcoming ufas that leave.

Maybe that would have us in a much better spot to eventually win a cup?

It's funny you used that as an example, because I'm of the mindset that winning a stanley cup is impossible with Thomas Chabot playing in your defense. I think there's too many deficiencies with his defensive game, too passive and soft, and I just don't think he's intelligent enough to make the correct read a lot of the times. It's frustrating because he has so much talent.

We'll see how he looks in a playoff game later this year hopefully.

Is it true batherson was a -5? If there was one dude who thought he was gonna saucer pass his way into points last night it was gonna be drake f***ing g batherson.
...and we were at home, why were we playing that line against whoever it was that was scoring 5v5 against them.

That's probably why I used him...he's very nonchalant about things. I just wasn't really trying to make it about Chabot specifically.

I could say the same thing about batherson. He was sooooo bad defensively last night...like just setting up defensively in the zone, he's clueless and doesn't know who to cover...and when he figures it out, he puts in minimal effort to keep up with them when they move their feet. Hes like 4 steps behind reaching with his stick as the puck is being shot into our net. He's just out there for a skate. No idea how to defend.

No one taught him over the last 5 years? You'd think practicing with Crosby, and Marchand and MacKinnon that he would learn about that drive of wanting to get the puck back.

Going back to Chabot...there was a play where he passed it behind our net to Jensen who had a man on him so it was a 50-50 play...and the other team had a player alone in front of the net...

Chabot, rather than urgently go to the man infront of the net to cover him, decided to try to "stay open" in the corner for a pass back...of course the other team won the 50-50 and got the puck to the front of the net.

I was watching as the camera zoomed into the right side thinking "where the f*** is Chabot...he was in the left corner and hasn't reappeared on screen to cover the man infront" and on the replay, he was essentially just standing in the left corner while a 50-50 battle in the right corner ensued with their man infront of the net.

You can't teach this kind of stupid.

It's as if these guys are playing house league or beer league hockey with zero expectations of structure or keeping the puck out of the net.

Its been over a full year with defensive structure being preached...at this point, they clearly don't have it. If you can't alter your game to a winning style, seee ya! Get replaced.

Do some people not realize there are 3-5 opposing skaters on the ice and Stutzle has to pass it out of reach of their stickblades or it will get picked off?

He didn't intentionally put it in Batherson's feet because he can't pass. He put it there because the Buffalo defender was reaching out to block the pass.

Maybe he should have shot it. He probably should have shot it. But that's not an example of a bad passing ability.

It's a lack of shooting and over passing. We pass even when it's not there...while being in prime shooting position.

The amount of times I've seen a Giroux or Chabot with the puck on their stick in the slot only to curl around and not create a shot on net and the puck goes down to our end...

91 shot attempts all situations last night... that's a lot of shooting; 35 hit the net

top 3 all situations shot attempts
Sanderson 12
Zetterlund 10
Stutzle 9

I'm fine with that but saying someone is a bad playmaker when they get the puck to the person they intend... that's not right.

In terms of Stutzle particularly - there is probably some frustration on his side. All season long he has had a lot of shots get blocked and as a result he shoots less. If you watch a game you can see it happen where he shoots and he visibly reacts when the shot gets blocked.

The coaching staff needs to get in his ear to work on getting shots through and also to not slow down shooting when he gets blocked a few times early in the game. He needs to be more like Ovechkin or Brady Tkachuk where he just shoots the puck over and over because he's one of the best shooters on this team.

Stutzle is an elite playmaker, all one has to do is refer to Tkachuk's OT goal vs NYR when he fed that pass through K'Andre (very few NHL talents can pull that pass off). Does Stutzle elect to pass too much? Yes, but it doesn't take away from his elite playmaking status. It's going to look glorious at times like the NYR OT pass to Tkachuk, and not so glorious at other times.

I think he needs to work on in general. Every time a play doesn't work, he visibly hangs his head and slams his stick or shakes his head...

Like, bro, just get back to it. Have fun out there.

I also wonder if teammates don't like when he looks visibly frustrated when they f*** up...like hell make a pass to someone who misses an open net and he'll slam his stick and shake his head...

Maybe he's critical of his pass quality, but it looks like he's pissed at them lol.

The body language is definitely a frustration of mine with Stutzle as well. Put your head down and get back in the play, quit looking at the ref.

Officiating has been pretty horrendous over the last few weeks, Stu isn't the only one getting frustrated with it, just look at how Zub reacted to the non call on Crosby slashing the stick out of his hands.
