Buffalo Sabres 2025 Off-Season Plan

Remember how they celebrated the Jokiharju* deal?
Those guys are going to be making the deals this summer.

*Hopefully because they wanted him to get another opportunity.

Not that it was all him, but is there any other player in the history of the NHL who has been on two different teams in a single season that had 10 game losing streaks while that player was on the roster? I think he only played seven of The Sabres 13 but I don’t have his hockey reference open at the moment. I do know that he played in all of the ones for Boston.

I would attempt to pry Coleman and Weegar from CGY for Byrum, Quinn, one of Ratzlaf/Leininen.
If I had to pay with pick swapping, I'd go there too.
Quality Peterka, let the league negotiate that contract for me. Consider taking the picks of I'm getting 1,2,3.
Probably don't have the cap to chase the top end, but damn Marner changes the top end of this roster.
Otherwise, Granlund, Bennett, Fabbro, Perbex, Brazeau. I'd chase Freddie in goal, and pivot to either Lyon or Vladar if I failed.

The biggest issue is the most obvious one.

If you were to sit down and say…ok, enough is enough…how do we turn this thing around? Your answer will quickly land on “build out a top tier hockey department led by qualified, intelligent hockey people”.

So…let’s say Terry finally has enough and says…I can’t be a part of this embarrassment anymore. We have to turn things around…and he decides to ask that question in earnest.

He picks up the phone and asks…Kevyn Adams. The guy who will NEVER give him that answer.

The moron has to come to it himself…and it involves cutting the string on his puppet and letting qualified people do their jobs.

Long story short…the 2025 off-season plan is to add a bandaid or two, pretend the shooting percentage of the last month will repeat itself, ignore that a 37 year old backup was behind the only stretch of competent results the entire season…and change out whatever assistants have an expiring contract.

If you want to know what the 2026 off-season plan is…I can give you that too.

Still not feasible to me why they didn't fire the whole assistant staff with Granato.
Its like having a race car who costs a million and being to greedy to put proper tires on it.
But its not that, nobody can be that dumb?

They didn’t even fire Ellis. He just got a different seat.

It was about the contracts.

And if this is where someone tries to bring up that they did eat Granato’s deal…I will remind them that they hired a replacement getting most of his money from New Jersey for the same two years they’re on the hook for Granato with the hopes that trotting Lindy out to media events and cold calling season ticket holders would make them some money

I haven’t thought about this topic much because I’m wore out from the possibilities compared to what I know Buffalo isn’t going to do.

I also think we on this board, me included, are thinking through trades that try to fix individual roster issues which don’t fix the larger whole.

After listening to the Quinn interview on After the Whistle, I’m convince more than ever they need a POHO. If what Quinn said was true, Quinn’s voice added a sense of stability to the organization and also acted as a buffer. Regier didn’t need to worry about Knox or Golisano or Bettman or Burke or anyone. Just be the GM and work. Head coach could coach.

He also had a perspective of being outside the fray while being present. He could see the bigger picture without being in the thick of coaching or trades. I think that’s valuable and especially important in setting culture.

I think Adams doesn’t have the brilliance of a Regier, as Quinn described him. But in the POHO role, I think his skills work. Set the culture, don’t let anyone in the organization stray from what is important.

I’d then go get a GM. Kekalainen is an experienced GM with a good track record. Let him come in and be the GM.

If I’m making a first player step, it’s the step Quinn made before the lockout. Make a list of players who are leaders, who are realistically available, and go get that guy. Get Dahlin some help.

If I’m making a second step, it’s shedding the guys who don’t fit anymore. Like what the team did moving on from Zhitnik and Satan.

If I’m making a third step, it’s going after the “glue” players. Quinn talked a lot about Mike Grier.

BTW, Quinn was taking advice from Bobby Orr. He said they talked basically every week and Orr gave him feedback from what he saw. Pretty impressive.

What if they insist on a Power instead of Byram?

I would have to negotiate that. I just believe Power has more value of the two.
Personally I'm in that very small camp it seems of wanting to keep him. I still think he will be a player, D just need that extra time sometimes.

I honestly don’t want to think about it

I’d like to see some coaching changes to improve special teams, team defence, breakouts and special teams.

But I have no expectations. See no urgency from Sabres

As yoda said there is no try, do or do not.

I became a Sabres fan a few years ago. Prior to that was a legacy Canadians fan (lived about hour south of Montreal on us side and had more Canadian tv stations

I am reexamining my fan choices

They aren't going yo be active in the free agent market other than signing secondary players AHL/NHL tweeters.

With their projected roster they will need to move some players

XXX-Norris-Tage
Zucker-Kulich-Tuch
Greenway-McLeod-XXX
Malenstyn-Kozak--Lafferty
Krebs

XXX= Peterka,Quinn, Benson

ZZZ-Dahlin
ZZZ-JBD
RyJo-Clifton
Bryson

ZZZ=Samuelson, byram, power

UPL
YYY/Levi

I don't mind resigning Reimer for 1 yr

The next 2 seasons thr cap space will be limited unless they get significant net gain in cap space on trades.

Serious question coming. Suppose Adams took the Chris Drury route and made a list of leaders.

Who would be Drury now? A leader and available-ish?
Brad Marchand would cost only money -- but there ain't no way he's coming here. Ditto Giroux.

Problem is, a lot of these leader-types now have NTCs/NMCs.......and until otherwise shown, I gotta assume that we're on darned near ALL the lists.

Bryan Rust?

Yeah, there really isn't that much.

Idk man. Feels like it doesn’t really matter anymore. Will be another underwhelming offseason and we will have another underwhelming season.

We have one glaring hole (top 4, vet, RHD) and two more decent sized holes (1/2 C and goaltending). Realistically, we have the ammo to fill all three. In reality, Adams should be able to fill the 1C and Top 4, Vet, RHD. There are one or two options out there to address starting goaltending and 3-4 out there to address the back-up spot, so I don't have a lot of hope for this one.

Dude do you really think it’s so easy to acquire all of those things? It isn’t, especially not in one offseason.
