He’s not the type who is going to buoy a poor defensive partner.

I think a pick or prospect does it. Or maybe a bottom 6 / bottom pair contributor. What would you add?

A lot of people in here wants to trade for Byram don't realize he needs to get paid and being that he's not physical means we don;t need him blocking Byrum. Jacob Middleton is already here long term. exactly. People are acting like Bill Guerin is going to want to trade Brodin and acquire a player who doesn't really play defense and has a concussions history and isn't physical who needs to get paid. It's like People don't realize we don't need anymore players blocking Buium and by acquiring Byram , it will.

I have no interest in Rossi.
I would only be interested in Brodin.
I'm fine with the 9th OA for him even if I think it's an overpayment.
My guy, do you watch Brodin at all? He’s not physical either and has his own injury history.
Surely Byram is not going to cost $8M+ per season, so the cost is basically offset with Brodin going out. Brodin going out for Byram also means there is no change to the status of “blocking Buium” that you keep bringing up.
Byram has been rumored to ask for 9mil per year. Yes, Byram coming in would block Buium due to a new contract. Brodin only has a few years left. We also all know Guerin prefers players who play defense and are cheap to have. Also Brodin has never had a head injury history that almost ended their career as was rumored when Byram suffered his last head injury and missed more than a year to come back.
He will get $7-8M AAV on a long term deal. He can ask for $9M all he wants… It’s not happening.
I have no issues playing Middleton 3rd pair:
Byram-Faber
Buium-Spurgeon
Middleton-Jiricek
That group is actually pretty exciting to have.
Middleton will always play with Spurgeon because wild want to protect and it's been that way for years now. Wild literally don't like player Spurgeon with smaller or same height anymore.

Middleton and Spurgeon literally had 86 total minutes together at 5v5 this entire past season.
To give you a point of reference, Spurgeon had 364 5v5 minutes with Brodin and 540 5v5 minutes with Chisholm.

We are entering a contention window, these next couple of years are the exact time you want these veteran players on your team. You add to them and that pushes the team forward. Selling off our best defenders for futures at this moment in time is extremely unlikely.

I see Byram as a significant downgrade to Brodin for the next 3 years when it comes to the Wilds needs on D. Peterka might be an upgrade on Rossi, but not worth giving up a top pair defender that is elite in a shutdown role. If Buium and Jiricek weren’t waiting in the wings, Byram might be more appealing.
Power is the Buff D that would be most appealing to the Wilds future core, adding size and eventually replacing Brodin, but Buff wouldn’t give him up and with them also looking to improve their roster immediately, it seems like these two teams just make unlikely trade partners.

Rossi is a good player but I don’t see how he is what Buffalo needs. As I mentioned in another thread, I think Noah Ostlund, he was awesome in the AHL once healthy to end last year, isn’t far off from being a very similar type of center. With Helenius also in the fold and Kulich looking very capable at center, I don’t think Rossi profiles as the right type of upgrade at that 2C spot. I don’t think he’d play over McLeod even though he is more talented, and I don’t think the Sabres would swap McLeod for him in a deal. It has less to do with value and more to do with fit. Dealing Peterka for Rossi is, IMO, also highly unappetizing.
Brodin if he were a RHS…would be manna from heaven. Experienced but not “old” and an absolute warrior defensively. But as a LHD, I think the fit is not quite as seamless. Still, I think he’s a guy the Sabres would definitely look at if available, especially if Byram is sacrificed for that 2C upgrade.

A downgrade in what way and what do you have our defensive needs as?
Power is much more of a risk IMO.
Trading Byram is the easy way out for Adams and it appears the momentum has started in that direction, so I'd say that's the route he takes, but I'd absolutely consider moving Power. You'll never get a consensus of any sort on a deal from Sabres fans though, some think he's a future #1 and there's been some flashes of that, but I just don't think he's got the chops in his own zone. He's soft as tissue paper and goes through long stretches of looking completely braindead in his own zone.
