Seravalli: Buffalo may not have a choice but to trade Peterka

Buffalo a hard team to trade with. They don’t need or want prospects. Veterans don’t want to go there.

Basically you have to trade a similar type of young player for Peterka. Takes out a lot of teams.
So why does a club make a deal with the Sabres. Rossi for JJP appears, on the surface, to be a fair trade. But likely the Sabres want a heavier top six centre who is as good as Rossi and the same age. Really, it makes little sense. Either realize the reality of JJP’s value, if it must only be a roster player of similar age coming back, or accept JJP is likely (?) going to sit out and out and being a lesser team as a consequence.

Which is why JJP is more likely to sign some sort of deal with the Sabres than get traded (or sit out).

His agent, Allen Walsh (Allan?), loves to do this shit and is the one likely leaking all this "information" about Peterka's "unhappiness" to the media.

Peterka clearly doesn't mind his agent put it out there

Well no shit, the man wants to get paid. Walsh is leveraging literally the only trick available in Peterka’s bag as an RFA coming off his ELC. The only reason people have any inclination to believe there’s any truth to this (and it’s not just a strong-arm negotiating tactic) is because Buffalo.

He could always tell his agent to not stoke the flames of his displeasure with Buffalo.

Plenty of restricted free agents have negotiated for new contracts without being perfectly fine with media and fans believing that the player doesn't want to be in the organization.

Isn't that reason enough though?

Haven't they kind of earned that?

What are the examples of drafted Sabres players not getting a deal coming off their ELC? He has no arb rights. If he truly wanted out he wouldn’t sign an offer sheet because they have no choice but to match given where they stand with their fanbase…so he’d be signing up to be stuck long term.

Who do you think has finished their ELC and then not gotten another contract?

Classic not understand how stats are measured and assessing blame incorrectly.

Save % greatly matters where a nd how the chances occur
Taking whole season encapsulates a significant sample size and most trends will be large enough that it’s unlikely they deviate meaningfully from the mean on any given year. Do you have statistical evidence that shot patterns have varied enough year over year to meaningfully impact save percentage ?

I sure would like to see your work.

True. Though there has been smoke around Peterka for a good long time. Seems like he’s gonna get moved.

Buffalo's needs:

1.) A RHD who can actually play defense and PK
2.) A two-way center
3.) A LHD who can play with Dahlin and soak lots of minutes and play defense

We've got wing prospects coming out the ears....we DON'T need any of those
Oilers have it in Nurse & Henrique. Just pick up the phone....

The other option is to sign an offer sheet. Once it gets over 7.02M(?), or 1st, 2nd, 3rd, does BUF match? Depends on the team offering to a certain extent, but in general, I'd say yes up till a certain $$ amount. Would the Sabres be comfortable paying him 8.5M over the next 5 years?

Yes, Sabres can match, but if JJP is truly unhappy in BUF do you want to keep that around in the locker room for the next 5 years?

Very true. But apparently the Sabres, according to most of their fans, don’t want picks/prospects. So in that scenario (offer sheet) they would have to match or accept what they don’t want. Hence the JJP for Rossi deal.

I think it's a decent deal, and would be a way for both teams to avoid the OS. The reporting out of MN is that BUF is not interested in Rossi, though.

If Sabres are fine with matching the OS(anywhere from 7-9M?), then it's no biggie, but if they are going to pay that much they would be better off offering a 8 x 7-8M deal that takes JJP completely through his prime, and buys 3 more years at today's rate.

Sarcasm. Love it. Keep your overpaid junk.
Should read the 9th, my bad. Let’s make this an epic block buster, will add Myers and Garland a the 15th for Tuch and Ostlund.
Vomit. Absolutely not. I have no interest trading Tuch who is vastly superior to Garland. Myers is an overpaid retread that I have no interest seeing back in Buffalo. I'm also not trading a prospect to downgrade.

Buffalo roster excluding byram, Peterka, Quinn and Samuelsson ( assume other RFAs are signed)

Benson*-Norris-Thompson
Zucker-Kulich*-Tuch
Greenway-McLeod-XXX
Malenstyn-Kozak-Krebs
Lafferty

XXX-Dahlin
Power-JBD
Ryan Johnson*-Clifton
Bryson

UPL
Levi*

* waiver exemption at start of 25/26 season

Needs are

1. LD oartner for Dahlin

This could br ssmuelsson, byram, RyJohnson, or someone else

2. RD oartner gor Power

End of last season JBD played decent eith Power. They could acquired another RD

3. A short term vet C/W as insurance In case of injuries. Kulich did well in rookie season st C do getting a C is s low priority. Thompson and Krebs listed ad W csn play C. I think someone on 1-2 yrs could be an interest. Danault if kings comes to mind.

4. They could sign a vet G and gave Levi start in rochester. If they do thus yhe team probably operates on a 3eman roster to allow ease of call ups

They could trade or buy out Samuelsson. Last year for the low cost 1/3 U26 buy out

If they buy out Samuelsson they could re-sign byram using freed up cap space. Re-signed byram+ buyout+RyJohnson ~ 24 cap hits of Samuelsson + byram. That gives them some cap glrcibility.

If they keep the 4 I list above they exceed the 23 roster max.

I haven't paid much attention to the free agents out there beyond the cheap backup goalie or the AHL/NHL tweeners that i expect Buffalo to sign.

If they were to sign a free agent, or they filled roster via a trade, then other deals could be futflexibility.

I think they match a 1+2+3 OS comp but take the picks in a higher OS comp ( AAV dependant)
