Seravalli: Buffalo may not have a choice but to trade Peterka

Well it’s not. He might make horrible moves that lead to a bottom feeder team, but that doesn’t make it a re-build. Jim Benning did the same for years in Vancouver. When Drury trades Fox, Vasi, Panarin etc for futures, it’ll be a re-build.
Sharks acquired Toffoli a couple years ago, were they going for it?

Penguins keeping Malkin, Crosby, and Letang…they’re just re-tooling over there?

Also hope Drury hangs onto Vasy, major upgrade over Igor

Did they trade a lottery pick for him?

You realize these players have NMC, right?

What moves lead you to believe that the Rangers are “re-building”? Dumping Kreider’s contract?

As Tampa actually seems to be in the mix (I'd love for us to get Peterka), what do you guys think the ask would be from Buffalo?

Trading Kreider
Trading Kakko
Trading Trouba
Trading Lindgren
Trading Reilly Smith
These are moves that say “we are nowhere close.”

My opinion:

1. Peterka plus a bunch of draft capital/prospects for Hagel

2. Cirelli basically straight up (JBB will prob have more cooking if this is what goes down)

Trouba/Kreider were dealt in order to free up capspace to make moves this offseason. Kakko was flipped for Borgen, who they re-signed. Lindgren is trash. Reilly Smith was an impending UFA they flipped for a pick.

I think you’re confusing a team that is rebuilding, and actively trading key pieces for futures, and a team that is trying to add to their team going forward, like the Rangers clearly are doing by trading a very valuable pick for a 32 year old.

The rangers are conservatively 6 or 7 very good NHL hockey players away man. Just calling it like I see it. You’re basically just saying that they’re rebuilding except they got JT Miller

Nahh these are moves to retool - there is a big difference between the two.....

He's cutting relatively dead weight and re-allocating cap elsewhere.........pretty simple to see here.....

Buffalo reportedly wants a RHD. Perbix is a 3rd pair guy. So it starts with Cernak or Raddysh.
If they want a RD I could see Columbus trying very hard to swing something. Damon Severson isn't a good fit in C-Bus but can still be a quality second pairing guy in a different system and they have the assets (2 1sts, Sillinger, Chinakov, Voronkov) to package up and make a deal happen.

No chance we trade Hagel, I'd say he's untouchable unless the offer is truly too good to turn down (and I'm talking like stupid NHL overpay).
I thought that for a while. But I’m trying to piece it together

-We are stacked at top 6 LW w/ Guentzel and Hagel

-Peterka costs too much for a non hockey trade for us

-Cirelli might destabilize center depth

-Buffalo has a trove of picks and prospects that wouldn’t hurt our salary cap

-the argument would be: We can make Peterka do what Hagel did and really replenish our prospect pool

I think it’s more likely JBB ships off Cirelli and just takes his chances at finding another depth C and letting Paul and Guentz duke it out for 2C, but it’s a possibility I’m entertaining. Wouldn’t like it as a fan but we could really get a ton for Hagel

Severson isn’t a good fit in Buffalo. Need defensive acumen. Our D can play in the offensive zone.

I get what you are saying, but Hagel probably has the best contract in the league and could be a 100points player at a 6.5M AAV for the next 7 years. He also has a ton of grit, masterful PK player.
If we wanna extend our window, we gotta find other "Hagels" to add to the one we already have, not trade him away.

I agree with you tho, Peterka is kind of a bizarre target because we already have 2 clear cut top6 LW.
Can Peterka play RW?
