Seravalli: Buffalo may not have a choice but to trade Peterka

That's ignoring the alleged "fact" that JJP wants to walk and Drake is signed for a bargain and also doesn't wanna run from the team that drafted him right after his ELC. Given that Adams thought Norris was more valuable than Cozens, I'd say Drake+Buf 2nd +small add is pretty realistic

Its not confirmed in any way peterks us jnhappy/ wants to go

It takes a lot more than a 2nd
I'm sure Peterka wants more money than Buffalo wants to pay him but that's probably pretty standard right now for RFAs that have shown good progress. Beyond that why would things have gone sideways with him?
Many decent young ELC players want big pay day.

I think Buffalo fans need to wrap their heads around the fact that JJP wants out. When this happens the player always wins.

What about a 3way trade?

To Buffalo
Jason Robertson

To Ottawa
JJ Peterka

To Dallas
Fabian Zetterland
1st (Ottawas)
3rd in 2026 (one of the 3 Ottawa owns)

Buffalo gets a superstar in JR, Dallas gets a cheaper player and gets restocked with some picks.
If its so easy to get JJP for Ottawa please let MTL swap with them please.

Yes and no. Eventually he will leave but it’s unlikely to be quick. If he signs some sort of offer sheet you expect Buffalo will match anything not insane. To me this maybe plays out like Necas in Carolina.

Honestly as a fan of a team where players wanted out, it’s better to rip off that bandaid right away and move forward.

Generally I agree with you but I’d like to know what the rift is. If he just wants more money it can be worked out. Jesper Bratt’s agent was miserable to deal with and strung NJ along but at the last minute they worked it out and Bratt is happy and so is the team. If this is Peterka asking for first line money and the team wants a bit more proof maybe they sign a one year deal with some guidelines for a contract after another good season?

Friedman said today all this talk is agent driven. Exposed Fat Frank being the mouth piece for the the usual suspect, Allan Walsh. It’s all contract negotiation, guy does this every time. He sucks.

Maybe Peterka gets moved, but it’s not because he wants to get out. It’s because Sabres won’t give him a long term deal and they’ll get a haul for somebody who will sign him. If Sabres will give him the deal Walsh wants, he will be staying here. Allan wants the most money he can get.

As he should because that is his job as an agent

Hence why I used the word alleged and the quotations. If Sabres fans think they'll get someone in their prime to replace JJP's offense and a whole boatload on top, they'll be VERY disappointed in the eventual return

If he’s a malcontent then teams will get rid of him. You don’t keep someone on your team that wants out and is unhappy. That’s probably bad for the locker room, and it’s an organizational headache. It’s also probably bad optically. Playing hardball is probably one of those scenarios that’s easier theoretically. At the end of the day being a player is a job and it might reflect poorly on the organization for keeping someone who clearly doesn’t want to be there

The issue is that it's just one person throwing utter crap out there that has no basis in reality. Merely brining thus up is garbage.

The entire league is talking about it now, alot more than just Seravalli, but believe what you want, I have a decent amount of skepticism about it too

Surely you don't actually think that if he truly wants out that they would essentially hold him hostage for 4 years

Buffalo has done the "right thing for the player" over and over. If anything they've leaned too much into it. Hence Adams saying things like: "We want players who want to be here". That said I remember Jacob Trouba "wanting out" of Winnipeg for years while the Jets held on to him, felt out the market and moved him when they were good and ready. We really don't have much to go on to indicate Peterka actually does want out, but even if he does he doesn't have a whole lot of control over the situation.
well....he does "want out" if he cant get the contract he wants and there is someone else willing to give it to him.
I haven't seen anything indicating that Buffalo won't give him what he wants in his next contract. If anything I think they are feeling out the market for him because he'd be an excellent value piece to move to address other needs.

Difference is Trouba had a contract

Sure, my point was more to the "holding him hostage/keeping a malcontent" remarks that were made. Like it or not Peterka is going to be forced to sign some type of contract. He could purposefully slow walk himself to free agency (which is his right), but he'll cost himself millions of dollars by not signing a deal with some actual term to it. If anything all this bluster coming from his agent seems to indicates he wants to get paid now and likely wants the big long-term deal ASAP. So again I don't think he holds anywhere near the power you guys seem to think he does at least not with Buffalo having this many years of team control over him. That could change moving forward depending on what Peterka and his agent actually want to accomplish.

Yeah except the whole point of this thread is people saying he wants out because “Buffalo”. Thats not the case - his agent is using the only leverage they have as an RFA.

Sabres can keep him and this will be brushed under the rug and I’m sure that will happen. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s moved, but I would be surprised. Likely will have to get a nice package to decide to do that. I wouldn’t mind it.

Peterka is also Pegula’s favorite player and we all know how much he likes to keep his favorites around as long as possible (See Girgensons, Zemgus)

yeah I'd totally be looking to move the 23 year old RFA winger who had 27 goals and a 68 points who's more likely to improve if anything. That's totally the guy I wouldn't be even give a thought when trading right now for a guy who isn't even close to a star. Any Sabres fans thinking trading him will do wonders is dreaming until they realize how our wingers look with him gone. Get a real coaching staff that wants to win before trading him in a lateral move to a position the Sabres already have a lot depth at and already have a guy who can play that role. Either he stays or he's being moved for a RD anything else is just shuffling chairs for no reason.

Totally agree. We need an RD who is a top defender and can play on first pair for any type of deal. And someone with a minimum of three years of term. We don't have to do anything. Peterka wants to sign a long-term deal on an offer sheet then he better be prepared for a match and staying in a Sabres uniform long term
