Seravalli: Buffalo may not have a choice but to trade Peterka

Frank shouldv'e lost all credibility here when he 100% claimed Gibson would no longer be a Duck
I’m sure the Ducks have done everything they could to try and trade Gibson. But who wants to give up value from a 6M goalie made of glass. So to be fair insiders just get info of the conversations GMs are having about players. Most of the time those conversations don’t end in trades.

Joshua is a good call. I forget what his contract looks like but he could be more valuable than you’d think based on last season.
3.25m for another 3 years, Seems like a good bet to have a solid season next year.
I would be wary to trade him due to that, but if it helps get a guy like Peterka, it makes sense.
Also he was playing way better in the last 20/30 games, after he finally got back into his routine, training and being able to just play again

Flyers drafts Hagens, trades someone for Peterka and then forms Peterka-Hagens-Michkov. Yep, let's gooo!

Yeah, good call. This was what Lysowski tweeted:

Lavoie seemed to take it a step further and only focus on the Rangers. Seravalli said something similar and they probably got it from the same source

Either way, I'd definitely still be interested from a Rangers perspective. I think there's a pretty sizable trade to be made between both organizations that can benefit both teams moving forward from a roster and salary perspective. I guess we'll see what happens.

If it is NYR, they don't have a lot of assets without NMC's. Cuts down the possible returns to a handful of names.

I’d do Willander + Joshua, that seems like a solid deal. I had a hunch Sabres liked Willander at the draft.

That said, I think they are far more likely to trade Byram and keep Peterka but that’s just my personal hunch based on not much.

Can someone explain to me why "Buffalo may not have a choice?"

Peterka is 4 years away from RFA. He has no arbitration rights. The Sabres have plenty of cap...?

The only way I can see that happening is he plans to hold out and simply refuse to sign, ever. Was that threatened?

Because playing this game with an RFA who doesn't want to be there usually isn't in anyone's best interest. Better to trade the player for full value now than try to out stubborn him and carry a player who doesn't want to be there.

"May not have a choice" just means it "may be their best course of action"

I mean, sorta? San Jose let a bunch of their guys go, sucked for 5 years, and now have legit pieces to build their future with. Add a guy like Misa to their current roster and I would suggest they are ready to start the process of competing, or at least adding to their existing team to compete and be better.

I suggested a 5-7 timeline myself...why is that different?

I guess I'm not clear as why the Penguins should hold on on acquiring good young players when that is their biggest need? I mean, using a 100% pie-in-the-sky example, they could get Jack O'Brien and Brady Martin this draft, Gavin McKenna next, and Dupont in 2027. Would that not put them in similar territory as the SJS? At that point, it would sure be swell if they could add a then 27yo Peterka in his prime to the top line. Peterka could very well be productive for 6 more years bringing him to 33. Which would be roughly 18-25-ish for the others. Isn't that what you would want?

San Jose, while building a hell of young core, has been hot garbage for 6 years and will likely still not be a playoff competitor for another 2-3.

That's a 9 year timeline, using a pie in the sky example where they got Celebrini and Smith. 9 years when shit goes right.

Seems pretty fair, looks like we got a deal😅
Being a general manager is easy

They probably did, but he stated that A - that he played his last game as a duck and B - demanded a trade. Both were false, why is he relevant again?

A Canes/Sabres swap makes sense for Peterka. The Canes have a bunch of young talent on ELCs but have a bit of a surplus at right wing and a shortness at left wing. The Sabres seem to have a king's ransom of left-shot wingers but aren't as deep on the right, so Blake for Peterka, as a base package, would be an interesting idea for both teams.

LA should be after Peterka and Byram, but LA doesn't have the movable assets for Buffalo. When LA takes away Byfield, Clarke and Laferriere, there isn't much for Buffalo to go after. I don't people are going to complain but LA management has already said they are building around those 3 guys. Yes, they are trying to challenge for the cup now for Kopitar and Doughty, but they are building the team with these futures. LA would probably be moving Spence, Moore, Danault or Anderson (less likely).

1. damon severson
2. cole sillinger
3. the rights to ivan provorov

😉
What's the price on Sillinger to LA?

I don't follow the logic. If Pittsburgh gives up a package of draft picks for Peterka, how is that any different than using a draft pick on him?

Even if they give up multiple draft picks, you can add up the value of those picks and come up with a reasonable proxy of how high of a single pick the multiple picks equal.
I'd take rakell with 26 1st unprotected back from Pittsburgh along with a prospect
