Trying to understand the possibility for a trade like this in the offseason:

Buffalo receives:
Jared McCann - $5M until 2027

Seattle receives:
Jack Quinn - RFA
Ryan Johnson - RFA
2025 4th (Buf)

Buffalo needs an upgrade in their top 6. Quinn has been too hot or cold as a young player, and the pressure to win is too high for them not to make a move. Quinn is likely looking at a bridge deal, something like 2 years $2.25 a year. Johnson looks to be a safe bet for a bottom pairing role as early as next year. I think he is an upgrade on Cale Fleury. Seatlle traded for a player like Quinn in Kakko who played pretty well for them, and they could roll the dice again for Quinn. If Quinn (who had a bad leg injury a while ago and may just now being healed up fully) has a good offseason, he could be a 50 point player next year.

McCann has a M-NTC, but he would have a chance to play on a young team who is trying to open up their window right now to be a playoff team and then some. He could come into Buffalo like Zucker has and be a leader.

I wonder if Seattle could receive more, but not sure how they are looking to re-tool.

He'd be one of Buffalo's best 5v5 producers if he maintained the same rate he has had in Seattle.

In his last 3 years with Seattle, he has 117 5v5 points in 240 games with a 2.43 5v5 points/60. That's very similar to Tuch's production, Tuch has 129 points in 229 games with a 2.48 5v5 points/60.

Cap hit high?

Yeah no clue what that guy is talking about. McCann is a bargain at $5 million with his production, plus he also produces well at 5v5.

Yea I think McCann is a very solid ES producer and would be like Alex Tuch (maybe a tier below) as an acquisition. My initial thought was Quinn and the 2025 2nd, but I'm considering that the 2025 first may be on the table for the right player so you can't not have a pick in the top 2 rounds if you are Buffalo.

I also think Quinn has value around the league as a young buy low option. Even with his bad year he is almost at 40 points and doesn't play top PP time. Seattle's willingness to go after Kakko makes me think they wont shy away from a buy low target, and McCann to me is a likely trade piece given his potential value.

I think Quinn and a late 1st for McCann seems pretty reasonable in value, so Quinn and the 2025 2nd with a bit more added on looks fairly reasonable on paper.

I don't think Johnson has much value at this point. I think something like Quinn, Rosen and a 2025 2nd for McCann would get it done.

If McCann was a pure center, I think Kulich would be on the table. But as a winger, I just dont see quite the value for the Sabres. I know McCann can play spot center, but they already played that game with Cozens and Thompson and it didnt work.

Quinn, Rosen, 2025 2nd for McCann and 2026th 3rd would be my counter

I meant Rosen when I typed out Kulich there. I was thinking Quinn, Rosen and a 2nd for McCann looked pretty reasonable.

Not sure if Seattle would be interested in selling him for a futures package like this, but I think that package is pretty reasonable in value for him.

Gotcha! Yea I'd be interested what Seattle fans would think about:

Quinn
Rosen
2025 2nd

McCann
2026 3rd

Seattle does already have 2 2025 second round picks, could give them a chance to trade back up into the 1st if they wanted. Meanwhile, Sabres get a true top 6 winger who can play with McLeod and Peterka without breaking the bank.

McCann would be a great pickup for Buffalo and they should be willing to move anyone outside of Tage/Peterka/Tuch/Dahlin/Power to make it happen

Huge difference between Kakko and Quinn as far as stage in their career, and ceiling/foor.

Kakko has no bust factor since he can still play a bottom 6 role if he’s not bringing enough offense.

Quinn is one of the worst overall forwards in the league, but who does still have a ton of ceiling left, and could theoretically still become a big time scorer, and even a great two-way player. But he also has a potential to completely bust.

I have a lot of belief in Quinn still (especially w better coaching) but I can’t picture another team agreeing to take him for anyone who is already good and contributing. If it’s not SJ or CHI, anyone else would be trading similarly struggling prospects or picks.

Cap hit high?
They can't.

If you look at current roster under contract.

10/5/1 at 72.4

RFAs are Kozak, JBD, Bryson, Quinn, mcleod, peterka , and levi/ vet goalie.

Kozak, jbd, back up goalie=3.5
Byram+ peterka×mcleod=19

That's a 13/7/2 at 94.9M

They can't afford a $5M player.

I expect Wuinn to be like broberg and get digned to a 3nd tound comp OS

Any trades Buffalo makes need to be neutral or they gain cap space.

The following summer they gave Tuch, Benson and a few other RFAs with not much coming off. Skinner dead cap hit goes up too.

I think McCann has higher cap for his

i dont see him in buffalo getting thr PP time. He's about s 35-40 ES

Top 4 centers-' Norris, thompson/kulich, mcleod
Top 6 W thompson/kulich, zucker, peterka, tuch, Benson, greenway_quinn/???

Sure they could acquire a mid 6 winger but it needs to be cap neutral. Not a pure prospects trade.

McCann has averaged 45 ES points per season over the last three years. Sabres need ES scoring and he provides it. He also shot 11% this year, when his average is closer to 14%.

McCann PKs well, something we need. He is more a winger but can play center in a pinch if needed. He is signed $5M for the next two years, that’s a solid value. Quinn is going to cost half of that as an RFA anyway.

Kozak/JBD/Levi or a backup will cost under $3M all in. Rosen + Quinn is already about $3.5M. If you do Rosen + Quinn + 2025 2nd for McCann with a small retention you are pretty much even on dollars with adding a top 6 winger who excels at ES

I think Seattle could get a lot more for McCann than Quinn and a semi late pick.

Chinakhov was offered by CBJ fans last time his name was brought up, Consensus seemed to be that a 1st + blue chip was reasonable but he wasn't traded for that, so the price may be higher.

Nemec was another name that was tossed around a lot as something that would somewhat make sense for both teams.

Quinn would be somewhat tempting but I would want more than a 2nd coming back. I think ideally there is a bidding war and McCann at 50% would hopefully gather 2 1sts + a blue chip or player like Chinakhov/Nemec/Quinn.

Its not a value if you don't have the cap space.

With 2 yrs left hes in more rental area. He's not returning what you are offerening.

Not trading Quinn for a 2 yr rental player. You want to move both him snd Rosen. WTF.

JBD is arbitration eligible. I expect more than s million. Levi too if he's not in Rochester.

How much are you thinking the other RFAs are making?

Buffalo has to do cap neutral trades.

His cap is $5M, the other 3 are $3M. Thag leaves you with about $16M at best for byram, apeterka. And McLeod. The 3 will cost more than tjat.

Seattle was reportedly listening on offers for McCann. It seems like they want to retool around slightly younger players, so trading 28 year olds for 23 year olds, not for draft picks.

Quinn is an interesting target but not really worth that much cf. McCann. Seattle should be interested in him though. Rosen + Quinn seems like pretty good value in the abstract? But obviously they'd rather get a singular young player rather than a package. So Kulich or Ostlund would be more compelling.

Realistically, if they are ready to trade McCann they'll have offers from most of the league. And McCann has a 10 team NTC.

Rosen is a good prospect, but if we can upgrade our roster from a young player with potential to a bonafide top 6 LW and not give up Ostlund or Kulich you do it.

Without laying out my entire offseason plan, the goal would be to move out Lafferty and Clifton to free up an additional 5.1m to cover remaining FAs

First you go get McCann. Then you worry about the other moves to make the cap work

If Buffalo is serious about making the playoffs they should do this, I have no idea what direction Seattle is thinking they want to go in
No. They aren't trading a young C in kulich for a 2 yr rental winger who likely is gone before they are a serious cup contender.

They need to improve on the D side and the PP

Your plan is short-sighted.

With Savoie we moved him for a young player with more team control. Not a 2 yr rental which this person is.
Moving Clifton means another hole to fill.

Last time I checked, lafferty can play center, he's a PKer. And he has speed.

You also need to replace them with roster players

Sure, if Buffalo trades or doesn't an OS on peterka then that is different.

I would not trade both Rosen and quinn for him.

You acquire him at the 36 deadline he returns a protected 1st/2nd and 1-2 other pieces
