I don't know about that... the narrative the last 2 years on Sabres board is that he would of made the team out of camp if he wasn't injured.
Problem is he is always injured in fact the last 2 camps he was injured.Love the kind of player he is but the shoulder is worrisome. I think both teams will get what they as they both dealt from a position of strength. Good hockey trade for both sides

Eh, glad McLeod has played above expectations but this deal is a long, long way from being able to take a victory lap.
I don’t think too many are taking a victory lap. And no one should be taking one. I think Savoie is the same interesting prospect (I’m a fan), but McLeod has been excellent. Considering the trade was widely laughed at and you had a ton of people saying McLeod was not what the Sabres were looking for, an update is nice.

I hope Savoie makes it and it’s a win win. But this thread is a CLASSIC HF board example of people bashing a team for trading a prospect for a non-star NHler

In other words, maybe the 30 victory laps immediately after the trade were premature after all. As they always are

(Edit: and to be clear, I do think Savoie carves out an NHL career. Very fun prospect)

I think many just under valued a young top-9 C with speed and a strong defensive game who also has a ton of playoff experience including a long playoff run.

Those types of players dont grow on trees, and the fact he's an RFA only adds to the value. Buffalo paid the price to get a player that plays an important role in this league, and youre seeing why.

Lots of bad takes that overrated Savoie in here. He was always a couple years away from being an NHL player

Savoie’s issue is he NEEDS to be a top 6 player, he doesn’t have the stature to be anything else. Yamamoto 2.0

He’s exactly what they needed in this moment, Buffalo is still playing .500 hockey. If everything starts clicking maybe they surprise

The issue with Savoie is needing to be top 6 or bust. His injury history has also hurt.
Buffalo needed a center who was younger

For buffalo long term they have at top 9 F Thompson, cozens, quinn, benson, peterka, tuch, McLeod
In prospects they have Kulich, Wahlberg, ostlund, helenius, Rosen, and a few others

Wahlberg, benson, and a few others can ge find in a 3rd line role

Buffalo will be trading a fee others on thst list above

In their losses there was fixable mistakes made and the PP is playing better. I think 4 of the L they had a 3rd period lead and a fee others they were dont judt one goal in the 3rd.

Oilers got lured by the prospect of J.Skinner rounding out the top 6 and hoped Henrique stayed with Oilers as 3C.
McLeod and Foegele at their salaries playing in bottom 6 just wasn't an option for Oilers.

Had they known Kane and Holloway wouldn't be on the squad maybe they would have kept McLeod but not if BUF offered up Savoie.

I was beating the drum to move Rosen, and I didn't like selling low on a top 10 pick you haven't seen in the NHL. Mcleod has been good. Savoie can definitely be a better version of Mcleod.

Still a good trade for both teams. McLeod needed to go on the basis of cap alone, and he had worn out his time here after a mid playoffs. Glad to see him take the next step, and equally happy to have a skilled top six RW prospect who is cost controlled for some time yet. He's been the best player most nights on a very goal-starved Bakersfield team so far this year.

Hosed only because they expected J.Skinner to be better.
What trash they ended up with to round out the top 6.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Did I read 1 goal, 1 assist in his last 12 games?

*checks stats*

Yeah, that sort of production is probably troublesome. Seems like he's getting some shots though.

Knoblauch had him on the fourth line to start against Nashville last night. He's not been *visibly* bad most nights, I've liked his game and try a lot in fact, but he's been the worst player bit by the shooting percentage disease that's affected the whole team. Hyman has 3 whole goals, RNH has 1, it's been a thing for everyone and we're just hoping it normalizes soon.

When it does, I expect Skinner to be on a 20-30 goal pace again. Last night alone he could've had two or three against Scott "Dominik" Wedgewood.

There is a reason not a single Sabres was really worried about Skinner leaving he just doesn't make anybody on his line better and doesn't play defense other than forechecking. My only problem is that Adams left a lot of cap space over after releasing him when we definitely could of added another addition to the forwards before the season even began. This talk that he's looking to add big is only going to annoy all of us Sabres fans that wanted a big addition before the damn season even started. The fact that Quinn has disappointed heavily so far to start the season isn't helping either because we could have boxed him to bring in someone really good to at least show him that its not acceptable but now we would have to play someone who belongs in a bottom 6 role there.

I wonder if there is any magic to putting him and Derek Ryan together. Skinner's got ancient history with him - his last year(s) in Carolina, Ryan was often his center.

-----------------

Shifting gears for a moment, I do feel a bit for Tullio since he wound up on a team loaded with draftees and whose GM likes to have a lot of depth so the Amerks are scratching 5 or 6 skaters every night. They have a couple of options for the sandy/shift disturb types down the lineup who have played well so far. And both the Amerks and Sabres have thus far been relatively healthy so he'll probably get his time when that does start to happen.

I haven't had any complaints about him. He's been fine in the games he's been in, it's just that guys like Dunne, Warren and Slaggert have been too.

Edit - spoke too soon, sounds like Greenway is now out so I would think they dip into the farm for a recall and that opens up a roster spot in the forward ranks in Rochester.

He is team worst in +/- too.. not sure how that happens when his linemates are on the plus side.

Has Skinner been that bad for you guys?
He was one of our best forwards for the first 4-5 games when no one was playing well then when everyone else picked it up he started playing worse.

I think the core of what is happening though is we missed players like McLeod + Holloway and to a lesser extent Foegele more than we thought, we needed more guys that played with speed, forechecked well, and could win board battles/puck races. He lost his spot to Podkolzin who has 1/10th the talent, but he's quick, tenacious, and wins a lot of board battles.

As of now it seems like the coaches are trying to teach Skinner to play defense which has been a mixed bag and often with linemates who aren't real threats to score. I wouldn't characterize him as being awful, but the fit with us and him, hasn't been great and we definitely aren't playing him to his strengths.
