Budweiser Red Lights!

$200?! There's no way it costs that much to make it and there's no way that's the price point that would make them the most profit. Seems odd.

You basically have a cheap light that you can find for $29.99 and a WiFi connection which would retail for about the same $29.99. $60 dollars max is what this should retail at. At 200 dollars you're getting in tablet price territory. Why would this thing justify being close to the price of a tablet? Brutal.

There is more to it than that:

Light $30 per object
Wifi Connection $30 per object
R&D for Invention $100,000 once
Game spotters $40 average ticket * 1230 regular season game ~ $50,000 once
30 transmitters (1 for each spotter) $360
Wages for Budweiser Red Light Employees $200,000

total cost per red light expected to sell = $150

So as you can see, not a lot of profit built in.

im seriously doubting your figures there

the light wouldn't cost 30 bucks and i know for a fact i can get a wifi module for less than 5 dollars and im pretty sure they do not have a spotters each games and instead have an automated way to keep track of it.

this isn't Home Hardware stuff, make that stuff in china and im pretty certain the actual production cost comes under 40 dollars and im being very generous

I was being generous. Cheap lamps can be found for $10 easy.

Generally speaking, the cost of adding WiFi capabilities to a device is twice that of adding bluetooth capabilities. Budweiser gives away bluetooth connectivity speakers in their cases of 28. I can't see why this product can't be produced for about 3-4 times the price of the speakers. Speaker x 2 for the hardware and x2 for the software.

They should just give you a ticket in a case of 28 and make you send in 5 tickets to claim your prize.

I thought they used to only work in Canada?

They were only AVAILABLE in Canada. They have since extended availability this year.

As for everything else....

Bought mine right after the super-bowl commercial they used to announce it a few years ago. LOVE IT.

Sure it is a frivilous waste of money. But that is sports! Wife thought I was nuts...buddy thought I was stupid. Now my wife loves it, buddy bought one too.

Programmed it for the Olympics, World Juniors, Blue Jays in playoffs (weird hearing a goal horn go for a homerun).

When I was on satellite I used to have to pause the PVR a few seconds to sync it up. Now on IPTV I have to use the delay feature in the app.

And there has been times the thing reminded me of a game when I forgot by announcing from my mancave "5 minutes to gametime....why not grab some Buds". To which I instinctively pour a Crown and Coke instead :P

As for the argument going on about the cost of the light and cheap manual alternatives...to each their own. But I will spend the extra for cool.

So there's a feature to adjust the delay time everyone seems to be complaining about? I just have regular old basic Comcast cable and just trying to gauge if there would be a delay for me or not. I've seen some videos with no delay and also some videos with quite a delay.

13th in scoring so you should maybe watch some games

I watch every game but the light is only on when I watch upstairs, which isn't very often unfortunately. I think its cursed tho cause I was given it as a gift from a flames fan and the days I turn it on they can't score so I never see it working

Not gonna lie, I've wanted one of these since they were announced.

The only reason I don't have one is because I watch games on Gamecentre. I'm assuming these things are synced to the live game as it would be broadcasted on cable. It would be anticlimactic as hell to get a ~2 min advanced notification when the Canucks score a goal.

There's been several projects using arduinos parsing nhl.com's live scoreboard (although this is a bit delayed) that can accomplish this for quite cheap. There's no way they're paying for game spotters, I'm sure they're just tapped into some api nhl has set up for live stats.

Here's an example of one:

Been meaning to look into these.. with Christmas right around the corner I'm certainly tempted.

I wish it went off for a little bit longer though.. seems kinda short.

It went off for about 1-2 seconds when I first got mine, but this season it goes off for about 3-4 seconds which I think is long enough. It would be nice if the app allowed us to choose the length

I'd get one, but the price keeps holding me back. I keep my eyes on the used market for one, but sometimes people ask for more than what it costs brand new just cause it's "sold out", even when it's not.

Ive had mine for 2 years now in New Zealand (yeah almost definitely the only person here with one) and used a vpn on my phone to use the app. This year the Flames and Bruins goalhorns are the same as the real ones while the rest of the teams still have a generic horn. My issue is that I can only watch hockey through gamecenter so it goes off up to a minute before I see the goal in most cases. Maybe when MLB take over the gamecenter rights in january the delay will be gone, sure hope so.

100% worth it. Just ask the wife to get it for you for Xmas. The new app update even has team unique goal ones. It only gets better. The Game Center delay is an issue, you'll either need multiple horns/teams sync so you don't who scores or only use it for games on tv. Come playoff time it really adds fun and excitement to watching the playoffs.

Just updated my app today and there is now a feature to add a delay up to 2 minutes in 1 seconds intervals. Previously it was 0,2,5 or 10 seconds.

Set mine to 3 seconds which was previously unavailable...used to have it at 2 which was slightly early....but closer than 5..and Draisaitl's goal he just got against Anaheim was 100% in synch

I just set mine to all 30 teams (with the sound off, just the light going off). Sometimes when it goes off I rapidly switch channels around in time to catch the celebration and replays of the goal.

Works great if there are 3-4 games happening at once. Gets a little crazy on Saturdays when there are 10 different games and it goes off every 30 seconds

There's always a delay. Some more than others. I'm a master control operator at a CBS station, and where I live Comcast is delayed about 8 seconds from when it gets sent out from our station

Streaming sites like gamecenter have even bigger delays
