I watched the first and most of the third. (I am not as rabid anymore. believe me that is a good thing).

Anyway, It was a pretty good opener. I will try not to jump to conclusions, like I used to, but I still like to go with my gut reactions to things.

The good:
1. Rask looked solid. He still "swims a bit much for me but he was obviously quite good.
2. All four lines contributed.
3. I am not excited but that was definitely Caron's best game as a pro.He had some decent one's his first year, but that was his best.
4. Hamilton looks more sure of himself and a little faster.
5 Kelly looks better this year.

The bad there is only one thing, but it is an important thing.
Neither Ericson nor Iginla looked like they had good legs.....I would expect that from Iggy, but not Eriksson. (They are really going to miss Horton.)

I missed the second period and Brick said Tampa outplayed them 5 on 5, but I was impressed.

Caron seemed quicker in this game compared to his previous outings.

Krug is legit, Hunwick was vastly inconsistent and then just bad.

Hunwick had good vision and handled the puck well on the offensive half of the rink, but couldn't handle a forecheck b/c he wasn't half the skater Krug is. Krug is totally unphased by forechecking pressure...he is just so comfortable skating the puck out of trouble that I can't see him fizzling out like Hunwick did here.

Hunwick had world class straight line speed.Krug has better maneuverability in tight spaces.Hunwick certainly had his flaws and I wouldn't want him back but he certainly could skate.

Exactly !!

That game was the last B's playoff game I've had the opportunity to go to.I remember that hit, and I remember Komisarek trying to gauge his eye out too. Then all the boys got into it. There has to be a yt video of it.

edit: found a video!

such a fun game.

After that, he looked timid in the corners, didn't like to get hit. Just looked like a shell of his former self. He had promise.

That definitely looked like a 1st game of the season - on t.v. anyways. I thought they looked out of sync most of the night. Marchand? Bergeron was great defensively and had a beautiful goal but... Krug? Chara? Eriksson?

The team we'll see in 10 games would dismantle the team we saw tonight.
Looked slow and (not sloppy) but out of sync.
Like they just didn't know where to go.

My thoughts...

1) Rask was very solid. He is definitely one of the best goalies in the league for years to come.

2) PK will be #1 in the league - no doubt.

3) Thought the Iggy-Looch-Krejc line wasn't as tough cycling and dominating in the offensive end as this line was with Horton. I blame this on Iggy floating a bit more than Horton and Krejc not playing as physical as usual probably due to injury.

4) Thought Hamilton still looked a bit lost out there. Boychuk was really nowhere to be seen. Krug looked good except for getting caught on the goal against.

5) Thought the 4th line was invisible for the most part. Campbell obviously needs playing time to get back into game ready shape.

6) Eriksson looked excellent - nice pickup. Reilly Smith on the other hand was invisible.

7) Chara, Seids, McQuaid all played well - solid.

Looking forward to Detroit to see where we really are this year.

****Still don't get why we can't draw penalties. We always spend more time on the PK than the PP...every game. You would think a team with our speed, transition and grit would draw a ton of penalties. Gotta go to the net more I guess?****

I just saw a re-run of the game and I'm very impressed by Caron.
He looks like he will fight for that 3rd line spot.

He had one goal that got blown off and he looked more like a pro than last year.

Overall a good game.

I'm surprised by how quickly I accepted hybrid icing. I feel silly for having been against it in the past. The best thing about it is that it speeds up the process.

Oh, and Iginla and Erikkson should switch lines for more natural pairings.

It's Tampa, B's can probably play like that and win 3 or 4 out of 5 times. Can't play Detroit like that and expect to win.

Last year they had a 60 minutes issue - I'd much rather have them not repeat that.

Plenty of good things. I hope Caron proves me wrong - I love being wrong.

Eriksson is silky smooth, almost like he's not trying but it's his style. Dennis looked like he wanted to prove he deserves that contract. I saw one shift where Tampa was throwing everything they had at the bruins & it all ended with seidenberg. Forgot how good he is with his feet too.
Kind of sloppy, but take the win.
Will only get better (until the February mini-swoon of course)

I agree-Krug has far more speed and is just better in general on the ice. I don't think Krug was ever a figure skater but his turns are just as nice as Skinner's.

Krug's biggest question mark is more whether he fully adjust to the NHL game.

Dougie looked better last night.

I still hope they give Bart some ice time though-I think Bart is good at the break out from the defensive end and is a pretty nice passer to boot.

Did anyone notice what the PP units were? The first PP was just awful from start to finish-of course losing the face off didn't help.

honestly didnt watch much of the game.
but what i did see, I noticed kelly was everywhere. He's at the level he was before the broken leg.

also looks as though the D is gonna struggle bit. Hopefully its just opening season cobwebs.
gotta love when both our D men get trapped in, and you have paille and Campbell playing D.

next up detroit
theyll be playing the 2nd game of a back to back and their 3rd in 4 nites. We should have the jump on them.

i miss having season tickets. first opener i havent been to since 97

Loui looked great, I dont know why you would admit not watching the game and then make a bold statement like that. Loui especially looked good on the PK.

Dougie impressed me the most, mixing it up, skating, pinching. You could see his confidence is through the roof

Why is everyone so amped about Detroit's ability? They won 24x in 48 games last year. Have they improved so much in one year that, despite moving to the East, people think they are so good? I guess taking Chicago to 7 games in a playoff round must be more telling then their mediocre season record (albeit a short season). I, for one think the Eastern Conference physical style will wear them down by season's end. I've got them finishing 3rd, well behind Boston and Ottawa.

Best thing I saw in last night's game was the d having the ability to skate it out of trouble instead of constantly reversing the puck. That's the big difference when you have mobile guys on the back end. Overall, I thought it was a sloppy game though. Team started slow, the refs looked like they were in preseason mode, and the game didn't feel like a regular season game.

Provided we stay healthy. I think the depth and competition for playing will keep this team on their toes much moreso than last year. Caron/Soderberg/Smith playing for 2 spots. But, if all 3 are playing well. The Merlot line best be on their toes. Bartkowski as your 7th defenseman keeps; Krug, Dougie and Quaider on alert too. Also, a normal schedule should help too where the younger players can actually practice.

True, also think he played hungrier. When you have more than a few qualified players ready to step in and take that spot, I am guessing it might have lit a fire under him.

3rd line did more things well in one game than I saw literally all season long from them last year. Tuukka was great when he needed to be. Liked Hamilton`s game, clearly more involved with the physical element, appears stronger on his skates.

You can tell a little more reg season game time for Bergy`s line and that trio will be gold, just a step off in the timing but you could see Loui is good....very good.

Kelly on pace for 82:sarcasm: whatta move, I was close to getting up for a bowl of ice cream when I heard it was him taking the PS...thought initially it was Loui`s to take.

Loved Iggy dropped the mitts for himself.

About what I expected in game 1, a little scrambly, a little inconsistent. This game was eerily similar to the Sabres/Wings game I watched the other night where a clearly inferior team hung in there with another that was working on some things.

2pts is 2pts....nice to see the boys back at it

Detroit's nothing. Howard is an awful goaltender. Send Lucic and Iginla after Zetterberg and Datsyuk, pummel them and they're done.

He played a solid 20 minute game. McQuaid, Krug and Bartkowski can't eat that many minutes which is why they're the ones who should be rotating between the press box and the 6th D spot.

Mahshmont looked out to lunch for pretty much the whole game. Ladyfan brought up a point that he looked "sad" all game long because he doesn't have his buddy with him. Lets see how long it takes him smarten up and get out of this funk. Something to keep an eye on because it will effect the play of his linemates too.

Last year Mcquaid/Ference was a scary combo when on the ice, so this year Krug better make sure he picks his spots well when he pinches in while in the offensive zone. Last night - bad pinch, Quader out of position, 4th line on ice = goal Bolts.

I watched the whole game very intently so I hope I am allowed to make some bold statements.

-It wasn't until the end of the 2nd period that the whole team matched the intensity of the 3rd line.

-Lindback is not a very good goalie**

-For those of you saying Dougie looked lost out there probably weren't watching the game. He looked fast, comfortable and had some key pinches when the team seemed to drag.

-Bergy's goal doesn't happen without Krug Driving the net. Krug had a really impressive performance. I really enjoy seeing him all over the Ice. I think both Hamilton and Krug are going to make it very difficult for Bart to get into the lineup.

-Lucic looked really determined. He flubbed a couple of PP zone entries, but his forecheck and effort definitely seemed like a man with some unfinished business. His goal was really pretty as well. Definitely looked a lot like the 2nd goal he had in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals last year.

-Pie had a rough night, I expect that to change as the season wears on.

-The entire 3rd line seemed to be a force all night. Chris Kelly looked awesome (triple deek!). Caron was impressive, but to me it's too little too late. I've been waiting to see a fully seasoned Soderberg and am not about to give up on him because Jordan Caron had one good game. I hope the Yeti can get into the game on Saturday, and score some not-so-mythical goals.

-Loui was quietly awesome. Bergy should have popped that pass in the net, but he will get use to those hard passes sooner or later.

There is so much more but this is what really jumped out to me.

It's pretty apparent that every line, particularly the top 2 lines, is still trying to find their stride. Everything was coming together at different times, so I'm confident they'll get there soon.

Defense still seems to be the same. Collapse the middle when needed, bend don't break. There seems to be a bit of a culture change when on offense though, and I wonder if it's because of Krug/Hamilton/Bartkowski being in the system now. They're starting to really push the D forward and rotate a wing back into the high slot. It's not just the kids that do it, Seidenberg was jumping forward here and there too. It's really nice to see.

A lot to like from last night, but a whole lot more that needs work. Happy to get a win, happy to see the team hasn't lost the tenacity and willingness to fight, and really pleased to see Iginla win over the fanbase on his first night despite not scoring.
