Matt Cooke in todays NHL would be dead in 1 period of hockey. The refs protected him back in the day and he was lucky to play at a time when player safety wasn’t what it is today and rats could survive in a softer NHL.

I strongly dislike Marchand, but he’s not even in the same stratosphere as Cooke. Brad’s elbow on Mojo was intentionally dirty imo, and that hip flip he did, but I think he got into the game, did dumb shit, then reflected on it at some point. Whereas Cooke’s stomp on Karlsson was the most cold-blooded thing I’ve seen. I consider him an actual psychopath, somethin like 5% of ppl be like that (and they run against each other every couple years), and I really think that was a calculated decision and not an accident, not even an angry reaction. Just an absolute piece of shit, him and Gilles were probably the only two I’d seriously wonder about.

And seriously, everyone liked Kane back then. I was hyped for the dude- lil bit of representation, named after a friggin boxer, that’s marketable as hell. Then he’s a dunce and it’s ruined, oh well.

I disagree, a psychopath is someone like Steve Downie. Cooke was a guy who would very aggressively chase hits, whose dirty hits were usually a late hit or a knee or elbow on the guy trying to avoid the hit. Still no doubt dirty, but I not the premeditated acts of a Marchand. Like he regularly spears players, which is not part of the game whatsoever.
