Our Silver today is our 2nd medal in a decade. So, yeah, Bronze would've meant everything for us. Our standard is win the quarter and prey!
I feel like its going to be dark times for next 10 year in Finnish hockey, so if we manage to win some medals in any age groups during next 5 years, I'll be extremely happy. I'm not very optimistic, especially since we have Pennanen coaching our national team and I have no idea how he will do. He has massive shoes to fill. He might be another Marjamäki who never won anything with our national team.

I should be little optimistic but the state of Finnish hockey is not very good right now and there is a reason to be concerned if things do not change. We had an advantage but other countries have studied it and now we don't have that advantage anymore. We did make the most of it though with all the gold medals, so it's not all bad.

So after all that I'll be happy if we manage to make it to the semifinal and even bronze would matter for me a ton.

Controversial opinion! Canada should have kept Adam Fantilli instead of bringing in PLD.

I really hope you guys win the Gold on your home ice, it's a great story.
So is the Swiss winning their first ever gold. They are really likeable dammit.lol

I thought PLD and Tavares were excellent btw. I get they are HF whipping boys but they were both impactful to my eye. Agree you should've kept Fantilli though. He's a beast and plays a good 2 way game so could've been impactful in bottom 6.

I think Finn hockey is in a weird 'lull'. I can't fully explain it. I don't think it's in decline. I could see Finn's winning at any level. Still getting lots of guys drafted.

Sounds funny but probably a 'summit' is necessary. Just get everyone on the same page again. Swedes have had them. Finn's have had them. Even Canada has had them. Czechs need one too.

Agreed if he is at 100%. . Or Celebrini.
I think that Celebrini would have been like Bedard. Not able to perform as well as usual against older vets. So I can get why he was let go.

But I mean we will never know now. Bedard, Fantilli, Celebrini all have big futures, they may well be on Team Canada together soon enough.

So when you shoot but the puck is not on your stick... How far away can the puck be and it still being a shooting movement? (Yes, this was not a penalty. Just curious in the definition.)

The problem is the leagues in Finland. I recently read an article about how some Finnish top league teams consider their juniors as waste of money. Not good mentality if you want to be one of the top hockey nations in the future as well. Finnish hockey people have became too greedy and it's going to cost us a ton of success and we will have only team players again without any individual skill. I feel like we are falling to the "no frist round picks" anymore for the nex t0-15 years.

The lack of competition will ruin Finnish hockey.

Do you think Czechia was better when they were Czechoslovakia or are they better now?
Czechsovlovakia for sure unfortunately.

1. we didn't want to be communist
2. communsit hockey is for everybody and free
3. with slovakia we had a bigger pool of players
4. it was really a big 3 for a long time and we were one of them

Today we don't have free funding. We lost 5 million people (and some beautiful mountains). It's a rich person's sport.

However, I'd rather us be communist free and Czech only despite all that. I'm hoping we can get back to relevancy and figure it out. Switching from communism to democracy is not easy and we weren't the richest country to begin with.

The Extraliga is probably the biggest Czech problem. In fact, some of our guys go to Finnish Liiga to get away from it. Svozil's brother comes to mind. Filip Kral comes to mind.

If you are 20 and in Extraliga it means you were undrafted and have no NHL hope.lol

Some teams are starting to use the young players and there is a very small trend of some promsing Juniors leaving Canada to play as 20 year olds back home. that would make the league much better.

For now, if you are 16 and have NHL and draft potential.. unless you are a guaranteed first rounder, it's time to leave.

Swedes have that dialed in beautifully.... so many first rounders out of the SEL. So many amazing developing NHL D in SEL. Extraliga has none of that.

Did not think of all that. Very interesting.

Not that Sweden is doing well - we aren't .

But the SHL as a league is great - really hard competition and I think the relegation is very important for that.

The matches in Hockeyallsvenskan to be promoted ... and the relegation matches where traditional teams like Djurgarden, HV71 and Brynäs got relegated has been extremely exciting

Even though is sucks to be relegated that makes for a fantastic product :)

I don't know if the solution for finnish leagues is relegation, we will see about that, but maybe that is one ingredient to make it better ...

Seems to me that only leagues doing quite well are the Swedish top league + junior leagues and the Swiss league. Swiss league get best European players now because of the money. They can pay the best. Sweden has just a ton of competition and the atmosphere even on the relegation games is incredible.

We do have relegation rounds next year, but it is made so we have more teams on the top league so the level of the teams trying to get promoted will suffer so hard so it is mostly impossible for any FIN-2 league teams to make it to the top league. It is just such a mess right now, only thing that matters is money and nothing else.
