Couldn't find a thread on him, so I'll start this one. The kid intrigues me as he is the offspring of one of my favorite Rangers. He's not as big as his old man (listed on hockey db at 6'2 200lbs, but I've seen him listed as smaller than that). Also he apparently won the hardest shot competition at the CHL all star game. His stock has been rising in the past couple of months, but he's been suspended for a boarding penalty. Would this hurt his stock? And is he expected to be a big, shutdown d-man like his dad or more of an offensive threat?
 
Not as mean, better offensively. I actually think this suspension won't hurt him at all. In fact, with the one thing against him being his aggressiveness, this might change it a bit for the positive. He also fought (and lost of course) to Kyle Neuber a few weeks back after a questionable hit. He was a forward throughout his minor hockey days and didn't switch to defence until just before his OHL draft year, so he thinks a solid offensive game. He does have a great shot and is a MUCH better skater than his dad.......and is a solid kid with great character as his dad was/is. I have had the opportunity to watch both him and his dad here in the Soo. If I remember correctly, his dad finished his playing days here in the Soo at 6-4 and 210, so at 17, Brock still has time to grow. IMHO, Brock will be a late 2nd round pick this summer.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would actually keep an eye on his teammate on the Soo, Brandon Archbald as well. A bigger right handed (American)defenceman with a bit of offence as well as a bit of a mean streak. Brandon has been paired with Jake Muzzin all season, so his on ice mentor is a VERY good one (signed with LA Kings).

Hope this helps, I am actually off in a few minutes to the playoff game here in the Soo tonight against Tyler Seguin and the Plymouth Whalers. Obviously I won't be able to report on Brock, but could for Archie, Seguin, etc if you wanted.
 
What is his ranking at the moment? Is he projected to pass in the first or second round?

You know, I've heard Archbald's name thrown around as a guy who could go fairly early in the draft. Have to say I don't really know much about him, but am quite intrigued.

But Jeff, while he put on some muscle between his junior career and his peak NHL days, is probably now only slightly taller than 6'4. I would expect Brock to obviously gain muscle between now and his first NHL game (that is if he makes it), but I think I saw that Central Scouting listed him at only like 6'0 even for their midterm rankings. But then again with Jarred Tinordi in the draft as well (who apparently is basically a carbon-copy of his father), I kinda jumped to the conclusion that Brock would be more similar to his father (big, tough, physical presence on the blueline).

But would love to hear how Archbald and Seguin do tonight.
 
went to high school with him and his older brother(think Brock was just getting in as i left) He's big but his dad looks huge to him still so i wouldnt put money on him being 6'2,from personal thoughts i would say he is a solid 6' now lurking on 6'1. Also i dont think he wants to be like his dad career wise, from what i understand he has a willingness to be more offensive minded. Id love for the sharks to grab him in the 2nd round, or if the leafs could get a 2nd rd pick at the draft

brock will most likely be drafted between 50-60, anything lower would be quite surprising (at least to me). if edmonton is looking for a physical defenseman, dylan mcilrath from the moose jaw warriors is probably a better pick at 31.
 
I think there is a very good chance Brock is still there mid-late 2nd round, but I expect him gone by VERY early in the 3rd worst case.

As an aside, his teammate Archibald was split up with Muzzin last night due to the shortage of defencemen on the Soo right now. The Soo as a whole were horrible last night, but Archie was one of the very few bright spots. The Soo's cement head, who is usually a forward ended up being his partner on D for the game and Archie REALLY covered for that guy's shortcomings. I like Brock and think he will play in the NHL and do well as a 3rd pairing guy with a shot as a 2nd pairing guy. Archie though is someone I really see having a more successful career. I see Archie as a solid 2nd pairing guy with the chance of one day topping out as a top pairing guy. I know this is a Beukeboom thread so I will stop chatting about other players after this post, but I take Archie evey day over Brock if they are both still on the board and my team is picking. Both play right D, so both have that appeal.

A quick note on Seguin from last night as promised earlier..... Great skater, smart with his energy consumption. Yeah that sounds like an odd comment, but I can't tell you how often I see a great skater fly around the ice, only to not have accomplished much that shift except get caught out of position from being too gassed. Seems to control his TOI and thus seems to always be able to have that next step every single time he is on the ice. Very good on the faceoffs, but he was mostly against a 16 year old (Daniel Cattenacci). Plays a combination of the left point and the 1/2 boards on the left side on PPs. In my opinion has a higher hockey IQ than Hall, but Hall has better physical skillset. In the end Hall will be responsible for your team scoring twice and allowing the other team to score once. Seguin will be responsible for your team scoring once and not allowing the other team to score at all. Both will help you win, but do you want the flash and dash or the more composed guy? I am still undecided.

Oh good to hear, I had thought he was a mid 2nd rounder but I've been hearing alot of people throw the late first thing around a lot. I just assumed everyone had more info than me.:) Sounds like a good usage of the Nashville 2nd to me.

Catenacci is another kid I'm hearing a lot about too, although he'll be eligible for next year's draft. But thanks for the update. Always intriguing to hear about a top prospect, and I do think it speaks wonders to Beukeboom that he's missed when he's out of the lineup (or if the Soo can't carry more extra defensemen cause of some roster restrictions or something like that).

Also, cause I've heard the suspension on him was kinda questionable, did you happen to see the boarding hit that got him suspended and was it at all really violent?
 
he could go anywhere from about 40 to 90, depends on who likes him and where.

He's a defensive first defenceman, with some offensive upside as he's displayed some of this year.

He's a good checker, but needs to continue to be more physical

His positioning defensively is strong, but his offensive instincts are visibly a step or two behind him defensively.

Decent one on one, and has likely pulled ahead of teammate Brandon Archibald in the rankings(But i'd put both in the 40-90 range). He's got low end top 4 potential, or an above average 3rd pairing, with penalty kill duties in his future. I like the guy personally and think he would be worth it in the second round after the first few players go.

Catenacci is nothing special... there's as many as 10 players drafted after him that are outperforming him this year, and even more with more projectable talent in the NHL than Catenacci.. he's got work to do, he still could be a potential low end top 6 forward, and could get picked int he 1st round in 2011, but he's not an impact player, and doesn't have elite hands to compensate for his size. He's talented but he doesn't have any elite talents to compensate for the size like some other small players that make the successful jump. However he's still 16 so there's still lots of time.

When they announced the suspension I couldn't even remember the hit, and I was at the game. Usually if something is worth suspending a guy for 4 playoff games you'd think the play would stick in your mind.

I had to go back and watch it on the OHL livestream archives to see it. A shot was put on net, and he cleared the guy away from the crease (might have been after the whistle) like he's supposed to unfortunately the player fell awkwardly into the boards and was hurt (separated shoulder from what I heard). If anything it might have been worth 2 games but I don't think there was anything intentional about it.

With the insane amount of problems with Seidel's list, that doesn't surprise me.

I also didn't see much offensively in Archibald when I saw the Soo play, so I'm not sure why he's getting all the love recently. Must be something, though, because a lot of people have him ahead of Beukebook in the 2nd/3rd.

He is a 17 year old kid paired with Muzzin and matched against the opponent's top line. Offence isn't his first priority. That said, yet again tonight he jumped ahead of the play and even a mediocre pass had him in alone. If I am Edmonton, I take him with the second 2nd round pick and run away laughing.
