I often think of that Washington team. Like you say when they seemingly took a step back for a season for a regroup that ended up being the right mix. No reason it can’t happen for us.

My honest opinion is the same it’s been for the whole time we’ve been under Rod. We never had a strong enough core to go all the way, just enough to be in the playoffs every year which in of itself is success. We had to add significant pieces to make that core enough. We’ve had some great pieces but never that cohesive unit like the Rangers have found with their top group. Guentzel staying a few years would give us that first line, but that’s just one step as I think we need a more obvious second line which imo is non existent today. The defense is going to be reshaped whether we like it or not. Goaltending is still a question though we’ll have the same guys next year.
I fully agree with this sentiment. However, if we did have a legitimate 2nd line, I truly don't believe they would be played 2nd line minutes and I don't trust Brindy to keep them together enough to create the kind of chemistry like you see with NY or Boston or Florida. And most frustrating is that I would fully expect that at least one of the talented wingers for that 2nd line would be playing wing for Jordo in the playoffs, because Brindy just can't help himself from leaning heavily on him to be our guy in the playoffs despite him not playing like that guy for a few years now.

Right now we can't score to save our lives and we still have Jarvis playing wing for Staal. Our season is going to die while still trying to drive that square peg into a triangular hole.

No. I’m saying we have an even better first line than what we have now, which is crazy to think about. Plus it lets us move Svech onto the 2nd line which may spark some goals into our bottom 9.

Also 110 pts pace for GAJ > the current PPG pace we’re seeing now from the top line.

So Jarvis is apparently going to make our 1st line even better, but isn't good enough to "spark some goals into our bottom 9" as Svech is apparently able to do. But you feel confident in that assessment that you're willing to change the only line that's working now?

If the ECF didn’t happen the way they did last year I would be somewhat hopefully about a reverse sweep given the way the games have gone. All 1 goal losses and 2 OTs. The PK is trending in the right direction, we are driving play 5v5. A couple of bounces and we could be up in the series. Sadly I think we go out like a fart in the wind.

Sorry for poking fun at your last GDT take @Wolfpuck

Yes I’m willing to change the only line that is working. We’re currently a one line team. We gotta try something different to see if it can spark the rest of the roster.

Sorry, but as much as I love Svechy's obvious drive and effort, I feel like he (RBA) neutered the line. Who changes what's winning and successful at such a critical juncture? Jarvis was sent to purgatory.

If you read outside of our inner circle, most criticize our team for being "basic" or even "archaic" with no element of surprise or innovation and attribute the success to hard work effort in the regular season. Results show it may not be a long game, cup winning strategy and it comes from the top down.
Swapping Jarvis and Svech hasn't been the issue frankly it's that Rod won't try moving Jarvis away from Staal since then. Put the guy up with Necas and KK and see what the hell happens. Let Staal-Martinnook-TT be your shutdown line.

Rod isn't going anywhere.

I do recall some scuttlebutt that Dundon tried to get Rod to accept help and an xs and os guy on the bench but he said no touch my gaiz.

Something like too many cooks in the kitchen. My guess is this summer Dundon revisits conversation but he ain't asking.

On another note. Just want to share how lovely the Rangers fans are. Last night the Rangers fan in front of me caught the parachute t shirt. His buddy was like “yo can I see that” grabbed it, and proceeded to chuck the t shirt onto the ice. Dude was all amped up that he did something soooo cool. Guy got instantly kicked out. Never seen somebody so stupid. Unfortunately the excitement of that was short lived as the Rangers took the 2-1 lead as he was getting escorted up the stairs.

None the less I hate the Rangers for their dirty play and their fans as a lot of them are just complete dickbags. Pisses me off that their asshole fan base gets rewarded.

Just ANY change of the lines to actually have an identity with them would be refreshing. They don't have to be "balanced", just have defined roles and be expected to execute those roles.

Putting Jarvy (one of your best goal scorers) on the line you defer to take defensive zone draws and hopefully skate the other team's L1 to a 0-0 draw is a great example of the (strategy, cough) employed here. Its hard to look at what this roster accomplished during the season and think that RBA is squeezing the last oz. of potential out of all of them. Rod has forgotten what got them here in the first place.

He ain't going anywhere now, but we need to start bringing home some hardware in the playoffs or this is probably his last contract extension here.

And it's not that I want him gone, I think he's a great coach, but we cannot keep making the same mistakes every year and just keep blaming bad bounces. Good teams create their own luck. That we keep ending up on the wrong side of these close games so consistently isnt luck

If one meme could some up last night. We're not beating them 5v5 by a wide enough margin to make up for our dismal special teams. So, that's really the only story line. Special teams, once again sank us. IMO the issue is shared between players, and coach, but ultimately the players have to execute. We just haven't found that right mix yet as others have said.

He'll blow up a line of forwards that has a bad game but you'll have to land a guy on Mars before he will dare touch one of the defensive pairs or the guys who plays with Jordo.

It's the same damn thing every year. No offensive chemistry in the playoffs in series where we can't buy a goal. This year the excuse of not having a shooter doesn't work because we bought 2 at the deadline. For one of them he messed with the line chemistry immediately in the playoffs, giving one of the wingers to his teacher's pet in Jordo and the other he refuses to play.

I'm tired of the excuses. I don't care that every game we play has been close. We are about to get swept out of the playoffs again for the 2nd year in a row, and for the 3rd or 4th time in the last 6 years. It's a coaching problem that this keeps happening.
Staal and his line minions were corso kings in years past. Similar to isles identity line they dominated teams in O zone and ate up minutes. That excellence ran until LY but cracks are now showing in Staal’s game. His line has been hemmed in too many times this year in both the regular season and certainly the playoffs.

Staal needs to be a 4th line C going forward but given Canes roster deficiency it’s an issue.

Jordan Staal is not a #2 canter, Jack Drury is not a #2 center, every time KK has a decent run at #2 center one or two bad games and he’s buried, Kutzy is seemingly past his prime, or the coaches don’t trust him.

I’ve been harping on this for 3-4 seasons. It feels like certain players are given a lot more rope when it comes to offensive production, or lack thereof, and it ain’t the ones born across the big pond. Maybe it’s a faceoff thing, or defensive coverage, but goddamnit this team lacks goal scoring in the playoffs. Let the defensemen defend and let the guys who’ve at least shown flashes of offensive talent try and score some goals.

Hell I’d put TT between Jarvis and Necas at this point or play Jarvis in the middle. At least you’ve got three 20+ goal guys on the same line, Jarvis and TT are more than capable enough of covering 88’s boneheaded defensive play.

If you’re losing the special teams battle you’ve got to try and beat the snot out of them 5v5. And the way the lines are currently set up that’s just not going to happen.

Splitting up Drury/Noesen and Staal/Martinook is mind boggling to me.

Burns and Staal both look like 2009 vintage RBA out there and somebody is going to have to make that tough decision. Personally I don’t expect Rod to be that guy.

To be fair, IMHO Slavin is a Norris level defenseman. It's bullshit that defensive defensive play is overlooked to the level it is when it comes to that award.
He’s not.

Like it or not the league has changed and truly elite defensemen excel at both.

one in my section started smoking a cig late in the 2nd period and somehow managed to avoid being tossed out even though they had him on video doing it lol
