It was not any less of a sport because of Team North America. In fact, they probably added to the athleticism.

Alot of people like Nationalism in those games, national team games. See what country is the best. It feels gimmicky to have collection teams, specially when its not really north american team, Canada and USA still have seperate teams. Maybe if they didint..

I can see it now. Laden with adverts every thirty seconds, hyped to the rafters, enough hot air to accelerate global warming even further featuring the Bohemian Bears, Scandinavian Sharks (Finland included), Russian Rogues and North American All Stars. Not forgetting the EU Exiles as well.

Don't forget the McDonalds North American Under 25 Selects featuring at least one player from every NHL team for reasons of "equity."

The Canada Cup was a sham tournament put together by Canada for Canada taking place in Canada in order to best benefit Canada. A real governing body like the IIHF should be the organizer of any best on best tournament with zero involvement of the NHL and Hockey Canada (other than choosing rosters). Imagine if there wasn't a FIFA World Cup and instead the 'England Cup' and every game took place in England officiated by English refs in front of English fans. And if somebody other than England won, they wouldn't even let them take the trophy home. Nobody would consider that legitimate.

Maybe it doesn't need to be that way. There's too much nationalism in the world already.

I couldn't give two shits about which nation wins. But some teams are just awesome and fun to watch and have likeable players, while others naturally assume the role of the bad guys. Like the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Right, but the NHL was promoting it as an international event. It's the World Cup; piggybacking off the Canada Cup.
If people don't want a nationalistic tournament, fine. But let's set the parameters here.

It's like buying a bag of apples only to find a handful of unions included. Then some dude next to you says "isn't this awseome! There are too many apples in the world today!".
