Just watching this video on the 1987 Canada Cup:

They do not do best on best tournaments like this anyone. The last time a World Cup was tried the NHL made a mockery of it by throwing in 3 gimmick teams. It was shameful having those "NA Young Stars" and "Team World" clubs participating. Bring back the Canada Cup, 80's style. What do you think? Should the NHL return to best on best in the format of the Canada Cup?

The 96 and 04* World Cups were Canada Cups with different names. Hopefully the NHL will have a proper WC next year without gimmick teams.

*apart from the single game final in 04

Yeah, there's something about these mid-NHL season teams at the Olympics that doesn't pass the smell test for me. Previously, in amateur-players at the Olympics days, players would be all together for a year and have a whole season to become a "team". But now, the idea is to just throw the all stars together in the middle of their NHL season, go to some foreign country, and try to bang out a Gold.

In that way, I liked the Canada Cup / World Cup tournaments better. It didn't interfere with the NHL season, so it seemed more like an actual team.

Lol yes let's change the world Cup back to the Canada cup which makes no sense anymore. Maybe we can make it Canadian cities playing each other like Moose Jaw vs Thunder Bay.

Boy would that be very lucrative for the NHL.

How is it different to throw players middle or after season? Seems same to me..They got same time to become a team..

The 1980s Canada Cups had a genuine east vs west Cold war feel about them.

It was also a better tournament-format since it wasn't spoiled by including too many teams it.

Finland and Germany were complete tourists back then.

Finland Cup would be great!

But seriously, go to Italy Olympics. And also keep world cup every 4 years, just without gimmick elements.
