Celebrity Death: Brian Wilson, 82

Brian Wilson is one of the most interesting people who walked the planet in the last 100 years. Mental illness, drugs, getting taken advantage of by a Doctor who ripped him off of millions, seeing his brothers die, getting fired by the band he started and then being prevented from playing some songs live, and the list goes on. He never truly had time to enjoy the success that he should have had. His abusive father was a monster

Brian Wilson was a brilliant songwriter, and for much of his life, a tortured soul. But I am grateful, as I know all of you are, that he found peace, love and mercy later in life as he successfully fought off the demons that plagued him in his earlier years.

This song was beautiful and tender, and when it was played with your girl nearby, it was a virtual guarantee that there would be some coed body checking going on later in the evening. Thank you, Brian. There aren't many songwriters who have had such a tangible effect on my life, through both your romantic songs and your rockers. Rest in peace, my good man.

No doubt that he had a remarkable gift as a songwriter. I've always thought God Only Knows is as close as it is possible to constructing the perfect song. For a long time it seemed he had a very strange and shattered life, yet he seemed to leave a lot of his problems behind as he got older, certainly a blessing and good to see.

I think this is my favourite recording of Brian's. Incredible heart wrenching chords and melody, a gorgeous Wrecking Crew backing track, and one of Brian's best lead vocals. Blows my mind that a 23 year old created this.

The genious of his songs are in the world's memory forever. His life and his brothers lives are a long storybook. One movie wouldn't be enough. In popgoessixties with that guy a forgot his name, he tells everything about any band, he said beachboys in the mid seventies were so addicts to drugs that they had to carry an amount of drugs for their use and other band were affraid of having a gig or play studio with them because they became litterally pushers. And they didn't want to take that much dope.

Charlie Manson stole his bro Dennis house who was affaid to get killed by Manson, what a story. Manson and his band of followers/stoned freaks were squatting his beautiful house on the beach a nice spot. Dennis had to live in another house. Sometimes Brian went outside, he forgot to dress for outside and went with a pyjama, stoned and drunk. He played pianobar, drunk, in a pyjama in a gay club in Mexico. Someone brings him back in calif\usa, he wakes up the next morning and forgot almost everything.

Two of my favorite : Cool Cool Water and Sail On Sailer. Cool water is a very underrated song, it's master in vocals, they make you to feel he water, the moves of the tide.

Sail On Sailor is a soul song like it was from Stevie Wonder or Ray Charles. A sailor song in the keys and moods of the soul, r&b. Ray Charles played it live, on youtube, very good. The singer is Blondie Chaplin, a black from South Africa who was a member of the beachboys for a year or two.

Not a huge Beach Boys or BNL fan, but ironically my favorite Brian Wilson song is actually a Barenaked Ladies song ABOUT Brian Wilson.

Can't deny how epic the Beach Boys were during their time, and Brian Wilson was an excellent artist and performer. Kind of bummed I never got to see them perform live.

If anyone's interested in Brian's work as a producer, a few weeks ago a fan compiled 50 mono backing tracks produced by Brian from 1962-1969. It's available as a download in the description of this video. Highly recommend giving it a listen, it's great stuff. I also have a lot of fun overdubbing my own vocals onto them.
