Another player that just plays f***ing NHL hockey. It's so refreshing. Thrilled he finally made it and he should never go back down. Though I'd really like to see him off the 4th line, feel like his retrievals are a little wasted there.

Smith's goal doesn't happen without Berard's defensive awareness and willingness to play hard to make smart plays. Half the forwards just dump the puck to avoid any contact or battle. How pathetic that big men are shown up by a 5'9" 170 grinder.

He also leads the team in xGF since coming up lol

He's had a rookie year Hagelin type impact after the call-up, unfortunately Laviolette only plays veterans who slack off and this team cannot defend at all.

well...4 years later drury finally added the type of player to the roster i've been begging for and it instantly provides the loose pucks and broken defensive structures that open up the ice. i'm not saying this to claim i'm some genius....i'm saying this because anybody with half a brain who knows anything at all about hockey could see we needed this type of skillset by the end of warmups.

ideally we can add another piece like this....i'd be kicking the tires on names around the market who fit the mold...doesn't matter as much where they are in terms of potential/level of production so much as what the price is and what the lineup looks like if the move costs an nhl roster piece...don't think konecny is an option anymore but can check, or why not see if buf could be talked into moving benson given their panic level. more realistically at the higher end of the market i'd imagine gourde or farrabee are options. then guys like hoglander/tanev/jake evans are options that might come slightly cheaper. i also think you could hit a home run adding someone with that type of motor toiling on someones ahl roster you can add for virtually nothing - maybe you find a younger tanev/lomberg or better.

not saying that's a cure-all, but i definitely would want to inject one more high motor/high puck pressure menace to the lineup that doesn't cost anything meaningful from the current roster and see what that looks like first. i could easily see it playing out phenomenally if drury identifies the right piece at the right price. i wouldn't be surprised if that was enough to let them cruise to the deadline with a ton of cap space accrued - that's where they could be fairly aggressive bidders on the dman market and potentially add someone like maroon for some size/physicality/playoff player.
