Speculation: Brent Burns

Sharks are very weak on RD, could use a vet in the room and aren’t in win now mode anyways.

If he wanted to come back for another season, it would make sense.

Burns is going to sign somewhere to break the record but no contender should take him on.

He can't really play all that well in his own zone, so unless you are pairing him with a stalwart who covers for his boneheaded mistakes you're going to be pounding your head against the wall seeing a 20+ year vet making rookie mistakes nightly.

I think there's a chance he comes back to Colorado on another bonus-laden deal. The Avalanche are paying nearly $2.5M for him this season, due to bonus overages.

His 2025-2026 season was a mixed bag. He was great in the first half, but flat-out bad down the stretch. He rebounded during the playoffs, but not at his first half level. One key thing, Colorado's PK was under 80% last season. With Burns playing a team-leading 181 minutes on the PK, the unit was #1 in the NHL (84.6%).

He took that trip to Detroit, took one shift, and then hopped the jet back home.
Burns had a couple of games where Carolina rested him more at the end of the season when they were sitting vets. I thought he had a "play a shift and sit" game but I doesn't appear he ever went below 10 minutes in a game.

Yeah, he at least played the game. And stayed at the bench.

If Burns reaches UFA I wouldn't be surprised if Minnesota had interest in bringing his career full circle. Big fan, but hope not. I think Carolina saw the signs and opted out.

Some have said that his chase for Iron Man will be excellent PR, which is true. The flipside is an NHL record will be dictating the game day deployment. A cooked Dman is a lot harder to hide than a cooked forward on the ice.
