Guys like Allen, Gallagher and Savard are showing why it is important to keep some veterans around during rebuilds.

Gallagher isn't the player he used to be, but he works his ass off every game and is always talking to the young guys.

Savard has been a steady partner for Guhle and he lays his body out every game blocking shots.

Allen has been very vocal about how he's won before and wants to stick around to be a leader for the young guys.

About Allen, at the end of the 1st period, Xhekaj was on the ice and went past Allen, who just tapped him, probably to congratulate him on his fight vs Kassian. Subtle things like that just boost confidence of young players, and that's leadership to me.

Its nice to see that Gallagher has gotten back to being the effective player he is. I really wish MSL would end the Dvorak-Gallagher duo, they don't work together and Dvorak specifically hurts Gallagher's effectiveness.

Nice to see him get rewarded with a goal, he's been much improved this year and seems to be closer to back to normal. Granted it's still early but he's definitely got his legs back, and he's been creating a lot of good chances. Agree with the issues with Dvorak, I wonder if a Monahan-Dach-Gallagher 2nd line might be a good option.

Gallagher is not effective anymore, his shot is also worst and is body won’t last much longer. Good career for an undersized player with limited talent and skills:

You know, he could retire and talk to the players as much as he wants from behind the bench. Or he could be sent to the AHL and be replaced with a League Min. player who is very chatty -- actually he can't because bozo Bergevin gave him a NMC.

He looked fast in preseason and blew his load in the first 5 games of the regular season. Guy is getting LTIRetired after next season.
Bergevin set Molson's money on fire, I swear to god.

He committed almost exactly 200m to Weber, Price, Alzner, and Gallagher...

He acquired Weber with 54m remaining to him
He signed Price to a 84m contract -- that's 134,000,000 USD committed to these two thirty-somethings

Just between Weber (took up 54m) + Price (84m) + Gallagher (39m) he committed 177m to those three players.

In the Price+Weber era (2016-2022) the Habs won fewer than one playoff round per season and paid Price+Weber 52.75+48 = 100.75m........ to win fewer than one playoff round per season.

Weber was dealt for Dadanov who is paid 6.5m this year, bringing the rolling tally to 115m paid out to Weber+Price+Dadanov. To win fewer than one playoff round per season.

Bergevin committed 38.5m to Josh Anderson and 23.125m to Karl Alzner and 33m to Jo Drouin.

Just outrageously bad contract management and an outrageously poor return on investment, both on a pts/caphit basis and a wins/caphit and playoffrounds/caphit basis. At least the Leafs have good returns on the first two categories... the Habs are bottom across the board.

Silver lining: 6.5m is going to be comparatively little after next year

Bad news: if the cap doesn't go up this summer then next year will be a tank too, that's 3 years of losing in a row :(

lol he had one bad game, after a great game.

relax
If Gallagher can be a 25 goal scorer, is there a team out there who wants to win in the next two years and who is carrying a very bad 2 year contract? A team like that might be willing to go all in for the next two years. I know, wild thinking. LOL.

On paper Gally’s contract is a strong candidate for worst in the league.

However, he does bring a level of effort and accountability to the club that effects the young guys positively.

Look at Leaf Land- Chief Keefe says his star players weren’t playing like stars, and it almost leads to a player mutiny. Gallagher knows his role, and is the big old brother in the room. He respects his teammates, the coaches and the jersey. I think his importance to this rebuild is not something we can track tangibly.

I say this as someone who ad nauseam complained about his contract lol

You don’t pay guys $6.5 million to bring positivity. You pay them that to produce. And 20 points is not producing. When things got tough last year, Gallagher was one of the first guys whining and talking about moving. I don’t consider that “positive.” Especially when you have a boat anchor contract that makes moving you almost impossible. I knew we were screwed the moment I saw that bum Bergevin sobbing up after extending him.

I’m not trying to disagree with you in the sense that I support this contract. But at this point, let’s look at the positives here. He ain’t goin’ ‘nowhere.
