Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

Gallagher has a history of being hardest worker on this team. Pretty good chance he will turn his career around.
Wrist, hip, and hernia injuries are three of the four worst kinds of chronic injuries for hockey players (the fourth being back). It isn’t a matter of willpower — if you lost your speed, your shot’s torque, and your agility there is only so much rehab you can do and only so much you can recover.

I hope he recovers and becomes a 20-20 guy at least.

I just read the Ottawa forum after their win against us. They hate Gallagher as much as we hated Marchand. They say he built his career on goalie interference and diving. This is after Gallagher critisizing Strutzle for laying on the ice for no good reason. They hope we are stuck with his contract for the entirety of its terms. Maybe this hate means something good. You usually don't hate crappy players on the opposing team, you usually hate the good ones. Hoping Gallagher rebounds. Bozo signed him for that long because when he's on his game Gallagher is somehow unique or at least is a very rare breed, he was signed because of his willingness to do what no one will.

Who cares what Ottawa fans say?

Habs had a 30 goals scorer for under 4M. Term is long, but at some point, you have to honor what he brings to the team. People would also cry if Gallagher was let go after last season and would blast Bergevin, accusing him to lowball Gallagher anyway if that was the case.
Seems like you’re making excuses for Bergevin.

Paying for past performance is what bozos do. Bergevin did that with Alzner, Gallagher, Price, Petry, and others.

Gallagher at 3.75 in a flat cap world would’ve been worth a lot on the trade market. Instead, Bergevin wept and signed that brutal contract instead.

Gallagher wasn’t good last season and he certainly wasn’t good in the playoffs. Letting him go over keeping him with that brutal contract would’ve been an obviously easy decision. He’s on the Andrew Ladd trajectory.

Most GM's pay for past performances otherwise we'd have minimal veteran players in the league

Because that's true , why do you think refs have him painted in a corner? Why do you think other teams hate him. This is a known fact in the nhl. It's like saying everyone knows Marchand is a pest.

Gallagher is shooting at 5%. Are you claiming it's his new standard, starting this year? He signed his contract after the bubble playoffs, Bergevin had to sign him, he represents hard working in your face hockey, and it still sell tickets. And even if he plays less minutes in the future, he will still be a hard to face opponent for goalies and defensemen, even if results are mitigated. Anderson and Gallagher are keeping defenses on alert, one with his size and speed, the other one with his no fear attitude. They are paid for that job. And I rather pay for that than for floaters like Hoffman and Drouin.

I think with his devastated wrists and many injuries, we do not know what his shooting% will be in the future nor what his new normal will be.

He isn’t quick enough to be a threat and a no fear attitude that gets less than 30 points a season isn’t worth 6.5m. It’s worth Maybe 2.75m.

You're implying that Gallagher has gone from one of the best even strength goal scorers in the entire NHL into one of the worst scorers in the NHL in the span of they year. I'm also confused what you're talking about his wrists for,

Shooting quality has never been Gallagher's bread and butter, scoring chance creation is.

What would you do with that 4M$? We had cap space for years, I'd rather have Gallagher than cap space, a cap dump or a crappy ufa à la Hoffman

Can he bounce back? I dunno. Can he shut his mouth? I hope he will. I'm starting to hate him personally. Used to be his fan but man his constant whining to the referee and stupid comments in the media is starting to throw me off. He's sounding like a Bruins player more and more. Wont cry when he'll be traded and hope it will be to the bruins he'll fit perfectly.

Are you serious? He’s getting less than 30 points and constantly injured.
So basically, what you say is you wouldn't have secured the contract after his 2019-20 season and let him go last summer along with Tatar and Danault? I guess you also predicted this year Petry play? Could you tell me right now who's going to have a major production drop next year?

I would have traded him at the 2020 deadline personally. His value back then with 1 year remaining of a team friendly contract was vastly superior to what he was going to bring during his next contract. Since we were a bottom team back then it was making lot of sense to move him for a king's ransom.

Maybe it would have make sense, back then to trade 27yo Gallagher. If we have critics to make about former management, they never had a coherent plan. There was no way anyone could have predicted a SCF the next year...

Ummm so you are supposed to pay for future performance? Worked well with Anderson so far...

He was fine most of last season, heck he was on pace to match his career high of 33 goals over 82 games.
