If there is one guy that could benefit from some time with a skills coach it's Gallagher. He needs to have more patience when he has the puck, his passing needs help as well. He needs to bring much more than just crashing into goalies and having opposing D beating the crap out of him.

yes if only they could go back in time and get him a skills coach like 15 years ago

6.5 million for a 3rd/4th line player without skill who can’t produce…

We could have kept Danault at 5.5 thanks Bergy :thumbd:
Habs had a 30 goals scorer for under 4M. Term is long, but at some point, you have to honor what he brings to the team. People would also cry if Gallagher was let go after last season and would blast Bergevin, accusing him to lowball Gallagher anyway if that was the case.

Don't know if this is a fair experiment, but a while ago when I was at the stables, picked up some horseshit and made a ball and threw it against the wall, guess what? it just stuck, didn't bounce even a wee bit.

Bergevin should’ve sold him before the year started for a boatload of assets. A 26/27 year old gritty 30 goal scorer on a 3.25m caphit would’ve been worth the moon to a team like Edmonton or Pittsburg or Vegas.

Instead Bergevin wept.

The Habs should emulate the NE Patriots: don’t pay for past performance. Cut one year early instead of one year late. Maintain high standards and expectations. Treat it as a business and not with emotions.

Gallagher is on the Andrew Ladd trajectory. It’s a sorry sight to see.

I have a glimmer of hope he will recover a bit next year but he’s not gonna ever be worth his caphit and he’ll never be tradeable.

Nailed it...............
Glimmer of hope...
LTIR is sadly our only real hope. He will break down, he is pretty much there now.
Hope I am wrong, and he bounces back, but...............................

I think he can bounce back : Gallagher is an energy guy and DD sucked the energy out of this group ;) If he manages to train stamina during the summer my guess is that he'll be back to somewhere between 20-30 goals. I think the last two/three years of this contract will be brutal but I think he still has 2/3 years of good production in him.

If he performs well next year, I hope MTL can trade him so they start with a clean cap

Contract is harsh and I agree but he's playing on a shutdown line with zero offense Danault, you can't expect him to score that much.
He's still valuable to the team, at 1.5M$ too much. He fits really well with that team of overpaid players though.
Gosh I was trying to be positive here it seems and I was very wrong. I still have a little glimpse of hope he can turn it around next year but he has been way worst than I expected this year.

Unfortunately he is done - we'll be lucky if he averages 30pts/year in the next few years.

This is absolutely critical for him to regain his form. You can't be an effective energy guy if you're small, slow, and easily winded, as Gallagher appears to be in the second half of his shifts. This is my biggest concern and reason I think his game is on a certain downward trajectory. Guy just can't hang with NHL skaters shift to shift.

If Andrew Shaw was able to come back and have positive value again it's not out of the realm of possibility that Gallagher might regain his goal-scoring.

I think he may have to reinvent himself - lose some mass to gain back some speed that he's lost.

But we don't know how much injuries have played a part in his complete ineffectiveness this past calendar year.

Imo, he also needs to get leaner physically.

The thing is with grinders, they’re a rare breed nowadays and if you are bringing in that type of player, you want them with size. Gallagher may get into a goalies face, but he’s a runt that doesn’t offer a whole lot more which makes him essentially useless. At least guys like Lucic could be thrown into a bottom 6 role even if he was grossly overpaid. Gallagher is a huge problem if he doesn’t rebound and he’s been bad for awhile now.
This isn't wrong, however Gallagher excels when there's another crease guy on his line. We're used to seeing Gallagher getting knocked down and outnumbered in front of the net, but still managed to put up points. When he's had teammates that take up attention he can be sneakier and way more dangerous when he can be forgotten and jump on rebounds. I think gallagher would do well on NYI

great point. I think he has a decent release and one-timer still and it honestly is just a bit more patience with the puck, and working on passing so he can contribute in new ways. Imagine if gallagher made a point to work on passing? He would be great at drawing opponents and dishing to an open teammate. I hope gallagher makes a serious effort to work on things like that instead of just trying to remain in shape and reaching physical targets.
