Player Discussion Brendan Gallagher: all heart, no hands

Kravtsov+1st round pick would be a stud return for him if the Rangers we're interested. I heard Gallant likes Gallagher a lot. And Gorton drafted Kravtsov. Even just Kravstov and 2nd I pull the trigger.
Getting someone to take Gallagher with his new contract will be no small task and I have a feeling that we will have to come out on the short end if we are able to move some of these guys.

It was not a good move to give him such a big contract and we might be stuck with him because of it.
No doubt, the hip injury/surgery was the start of the death blows that will come for Gallagher.

Edit: It is similar to Pacioretty saga except they kept Gallagher. Both were underpaid for so long they felt the need to make money. Now that Gallagher is getting paid for what he did, he cant possibly live up to it. I didnt think he could live up to it playing healthy but the injuries will really take away whatever years they would have got value out of him.

Agreed. Gallagher is almost just has hard to move as Price. Just starting his 6 year deal where he is overpaid and it's not going well. Both term and AAV is a problem. Which is why I would push Molson to consider retention

Gallagher (age 29-34) at $6.5M
vs
Gallagher (age 29-34) at $4.5M

I think we get bites on the later.

The contract is brutal. In addition to the length and AAV, he makes $8M in real dollars in '23-24 and $9M in '24-25. So not only do we have to find a team that can fit his cap hit, we have to find a team that has deep enough pockets to stomach the dollar cost on what will likely be a third liner.

He's got a great attitude and he will never upstage a GM in public so, obviously, he's worth more to MB than Danault. Gallagher has been great for the team, and there were years where he would pick up any line he was on, but the last couple of seasons have been rough. We'll see how he recovers from the series of hand injuries.

The complete agreement among refs that he is a vicious player who should be called if he breathes on goalies while the D can do anything they want with no call doesn't help, either. He's always taken a lot of abuse and kept smiling, but the level of abuse is way up and he doesn't seem to be able to smile about it now.

I said it. They paid him for what he's already done, not what he can do now. Horrible contract for a banged up guy who was never really that talented to begin with. He played his butt off and had great seasons, but he can't play like that any longer. Anyone thinking he'll score even 25 is deluded. I'd be shocked if he ever hits 20.

Can he bounce back? yes.
Will it be short lived? more than likely.

Can't see this guy the way he plays and with the tools he has being dominant past 35 years old. So any regain of life will likely not last more than 2-3 seasons imo.

Dude was invisible last playoffs. It's been atrocious in the last playoff runs offensively and he's paid for his ''offensive skills'' which just consider of ramming the goalie and get rebounds.
Outside this forum and few others like Bruins or Sens, most nhl fans didn't knew anything from Gally. The last PO run we can't convice them (all the other nhl fans of league) that Gally is such a great player, we have to trust our memory and bring back his old stats. But on the other side Danault did shut down at least 3 very good centers in a row and some nhl fans saw that. A DG and his team was impressed enough to pay him 5,5 M.

Give him a center such as Kopitar, great playmaking, size and not too slow and Gally can score 25 again.

The goal that got called off a few days ago has to be a reflection of his history of crashing goalies. If Drouin or Armia is there instead of Gallagher it's probably a goal. He can't do enough on the ice anymore to warrant such a big contract and as others have said, he is paid for his past and that is going to be a tough contract to live with. I am sure that there is plenty of demand for him, just not at the amount he is getting paid, at 5 million there would be plenty of interest in him.

Horrible decision-making by the old GM. He picked the wrong guy between Danault and Gallagher to go forward with and was criminally cheapskate with Corey Perry.

You could say the same about almost any forward. Does Gallagher deserve to be a first line player anymore, playing with a Kopitar? No, he doesn't. I don't think he'd be able to hold down that spot for long anyway.
I love what he brought, but he's clearly past his prime.

Bergevin was in tears at the press conference after signing him...I knew it was a bad move then lol
He should've been dealt at that time! They would've got a great return. I think Berge could be good "in the moment ", but as a long term planner, he was terrible. Of course, another big problem was the crappy drafting and lack of players to actually take the place of vets you trade, but that's a whole other thread!

I'm not sure Perry would have been willing to come back. He knew Weber wouldn't be back and Price wasn't healthy. He doesn't have that much time left to get another cup. Last year the habs were expected to be good, this year they were starting the season in disarray.

The decision making has been pretty consistently bad with Price sometimes compensating for it. My problem with this decision is that it is an ego decision, where he takes the guy he knows will never try to upstage him, who will always say good things about management instead of the guy who is a bit more difficult. Sure, you want the guy with a good attitude generally, and who always agrees with coaching and management. It's a plus, but it's not the only thing.

He got caught taking a shot at a goalie this year or last, and a lot of Toronto media seized on it as though it proved he was always bad. I'd say it is an aberration in a career where he has mostly been hit and not hit back.

Overall I would say he is hurt by the lack of professionalism in the NHL. The refs should have real, obvious standards, they shouldn't be as Toronto-centric as they are, and, no, they don't make calls in favor of Toronto, but they get caught in the media storm that may actually be worse than ours.
