just noticed something very unusual.

above is changes/scratches for todays' card in saratoga. this i noticed right away, especially for the 5th race:

Scratch Reason - Reason Unavailable changed to PrivVet-Illness

is there a malady that's spreading around around some of the barns that i'm not aware of?
This is at least the second time this summer Chad Brown popped. He decried the lower purses at Saratoga prior to the meet's start.

In either event, this race is blemish.

"It's a four-horse field and the stalls are full here at NYRA. There are no empty stalls. So where are the other (trainers)? They need to stop complaining and start running," Brown said. "I have three very different horses and we pointed them for this race. I didn't sit out and wait for a Kentucky Downs race. I didn't run anything at Woodbine this month. I could have split these horses up, but the owners are fine with running against each other. It doesn't feel good getting beat by one of my other horses, but I want to support NYRA. These are prestigious races with a full backside. I find it very hard to believe there are not older filly and mare turfers who could go in a nice grade 2 stakes like this and not only support NYRA but improve the value of their horse.

"Whose fault is it? Not mine. I am going to show up. I don't even read the nominations. I just point and shoot."

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $24.5 million. Tomorrow will be an extraordinary day. The handle from today should be doubled and perhaps more.
  • Chad Brown won three of six races he entered and finished 9 3-1-0.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode winners in the last two races. The four riders who have separated themselves from the rest of the colony, to date, are Irad Ortiz, Jr., Dylan Davis, Flavien Prat and Gaffalione.
1724465170947.png
  • Race 7: Who had Chad Brown-Chad Brown-Todd Pletcher for the last three finishers? It happened. The top three finishers had all hit the track while the remaining seven starters were out for the first time.
  • Race 10: Raging Sea (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade I $500,000 Personal Ensign Stakes by a head over Idiomatic (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) in a thriller.

Timonium (Maryland):
  • Opening Day: Timonium, in its 145th year, opened today as part of the Maryland State Fair.
Charles Town (West Virginia):
  • Card: 13 races many under the lights. Eight races either stakes or graded.
    Handle: $6.5 million.
  • Race 13: Went off at 12:07 am. The original post was 11:30 pm ET.
  • Race 11: Skippylongstocking (Jose Ortiz/Saffie Joseph) buried the competition to go back-to-back in winning the $1,000,000 Charles Town Classic. He has now earned $2.99 million.
  • Race 10: Mystic Lake (Mike Smith/Saffie Joseph), the lone Florida-bred in the race, was dominant in winning the Grade 2 $750,000 Charles Town Oaks. The winner has alternated wins and losses her past eight starts
  • Race 9: Valentine Candy (Cristian Torres/Steve Asmussen) won the $500,000 Robert Hilton Stakes
  • Race 8: Free Like a Girl (Luis Saez/Chasey Pomier) won the $500,000 Misty Bennett Pink Ribbon Stakes. The 5-year-old was out for the 41st time but just the second appearance at Charles Town. The Louisiana-bred entered off two graded stakes losses at Churchill Downs. Tonight was victory #18.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $11.6 million. Not too shabby for a Friday.
  • Card: Twelve races of which five were stakes highlighted by the $1,000,000 King's Plate. Part of this card was postponed from this past Saturday.
  • Sahin Civaci, who picked up multiple mounts in part due to the absence of Kazushi Kimura, won twice but also placed five times. He finished 10 2-5-0.
  • Race 5: Cairo Caper (Jose Campos/Nathan Squires) won the $150,000 Soaring Free Stakes.
  • Race 7: Filo Di Arianna (Sahin Civaci/Mark Casse) won the Grade 2 $200,000 King Edward Stakes. The rider picked up the mount. The 8-year-old Brazilian-foal is 17 9-3-1 but perhaps more significantly is a perfect 5 5-0-0 on Woodbine turf and 6-for-7 at the track. The gelding won this race in 2022.
  • Race 8: Patches O'Houlihan (Sofia Vives/Robert Tiller) won the $150,000 Grade 3 Bold Venture Stakes. Patches, labeled a "fan favorite" at the oval, is an extraordinary 11 9-0-0 with each race at Woodbine.
  • Race 9: Caitlinhergrtness (Rafael Hernandez/Sid Attard) earned an upset at 9-to-1 as the lone filly to win the $1,000,000 King's Plate and with it the first leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The winning jockey oozed enthusiasm through much of the post-race celebration.
  • Race 10: Shifty (Sahin Civaci/Mark Casse) won the $150,000 Catch A Glimpse Stakes. The maiden was sent off 11-to-1 and never looked back.
  • Race 11: Rapid Test (Emma-Jayne Wilson/Catherine Day Phillips) -- at 58-to-1 -- nipped Last Dawn (Sofia Vives/Gail Cox) -- at 51-to-1 -- in a battle of bombers to produce a $2 exacta that returned over $1,500. The $.20 super returned close to $30,000.
  • Race 12: Exotics were exceptional. The $1 Pick 5 returned more than $111,000. The $1 Pick 6 paid over $339,000.

am i going to see some pawgs wearing ky down cheerleading outfits twerking for a few minutes before they announce riders up for the big ass fans race?

179 grand purse? might as well classify it as a grade 2 stakes race. highest i've ever seen is 100 grand msw in saratoga, which is most likely the norm now for turf msw's. i'm shocked chad brown doesn't have at lease 2 entrants in that race.

Churchill has $120k but I forget if that was limited to older horses rather than 2-year-olds.

Handicappers occasionally misjudge the finish line due to the awkwardness of the course and can celebrate too early.

I checked the last three years at KD:

Chad Brown is 4/29 the past three years at KD.

John Velazquez, who is known for difficulty at the track. Is 2/44.

  • Mark Casse sent out horses at five tracks. He had four wins among 17 starters.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $63 million shattered the prior mark of $55.6 million. The Travers had a handle of more than $18,000,000.
  • Card: A massive card with 14 races highlighted by five Grade I stakes including the Travers. The most recent prior time NYRA had 14 races on a Travers card was 2014. One race was added this year to the original card due to a weather-related cancellation earlier in the summer.
  • Weather: Spectacular. If this weather could continue into November for the Breeders' Cup.
  • To Date: Despite some blemishes, between the earlier Belmont at Saratoga meet and the current annual show, this has been an exceptional year for the facility.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode 13 times today with just one win. Tyler Gaffalione won twice. The two are separated by four wins this meet atop the leader board for jockeys.
  • Flavien Prat rode two Grade I winners. That should boost his chances in the Eclipse award voting for Outstanding Jockey of the Year.
  • Race 9: Far Bridge (Joel Rosario/Christophe Clement) won the $750,000 Grade I Sword Dancer Stakes. The race is part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.
  • Race 10: Society (Tyler Gaffalione/Steve Asmussen) won the $500,000 Grade I Ballerina Handicap. The race is part of the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series.
  • Race 11: Mullikin (Flavien Prat/Rodolphe Brisset) won the $500,000 Grade I Forego Stakes. The trainer earned his first Grade I win. The four-year-old colt has won five of nine starts including four straight wins.
  • Race 12: Domestic Product (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $500,000 Grade I Allen Jerkens Memorial.
  • Race 13: Fierceness (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the $1.25 million Grade I Travers Stakes. The jockey and trainer won this race for the third time, the second time as a tandem (Flower Alley in 2005). Fierceness is 8 4-0-1 lifetime including a sparkling 3 3-0-0 mark at the Spa and has earned over $2.6 million. The race had an exhilarating conclusion as Thorpedo Anna (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Kenny McPeek) nearly got up for a time but placed by a head. Sierra Leone (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) finished third as the favorite and despite over $2.3 million in earnings has not won any of his past four starts though hit the board in each and all have been graded stakes. Oddly, the Gun Runner cost $2.3 million which is right at what he has earned.

Parx (Pennsylvania):
  • Handle: $2.1 million.
  • Jose Lezcano made a rare visit to Parx. He won three times on board five horses.
  • Paco Lopez had the rare line of 8 0-5-3 (0%/100%). He was winless but hit the board with every mount.
  • Race 9: Gould's Gold (Emmanuel Esquivel/Kenny McPeek) was sent off the favorite in a field of five to win the $200,000 Smarty Jones Stakes which could serve as a prep for the Pennsylvania Derby.

Ellis Park (Kentucky):
  • MSW: Three deep MSW races.
FanDuel (Illinois):
  • Race 6: E J Won the Cup (Mike Smith/Doug O'Neill) won the $250,000 St. Louis Derby by nearly 10 lengths. Have Smith Will Travel: The ageless veteran's U.S. tour has seen him win four of his past nine races and in four states: Illinois, New Jersey, West Virginia and California. He also won at New York a month ago. He is 9 4-1-2 since August 15. The race went off at 10:02 pm CT. The horse is named after NHL player Erik Johnson.
1724582245766.png

Del Mar (California):
  • Race 9: Raging Torrent (Antonio Fresu/Doug O'Neill) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Pat 'O'Brien Stakes and with the victory received an invitation via the Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" series. The Chosen Vron (Hector Berrios/Eric Kruljac), the California-born local superstar, placed as the favorite and now sports a record of 25 19-2-2.

1724581210865.png

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $6.4 million.
  • Race 10: Ontario Holiday (Patrick Husbands/Mark Casse) won the $135,000 Seaway Stakes by a neck at 5-to-1.
Century Mile (Alberta):
  • Handle: $1.4 million.
  • Card: Three races with purses $100,000+ including the Grade 3 Canadian Derby.
  • Rasheed Hughes won four straight races in a 5-win evening.
  • Amadeo Perez rode three winners
  • Barbara Heads sent out five horses, four returned victorious.
  • Amadeo Perez/Barbara Heads combined three times and won all three efforts.
  • Gonzalo Anderson trained a natural hat trick amid his 3-win night.
  • Race 9: Avana (Amadeo Perez/Barbara Heads) was sent off the favorite and won the $100,000 Century Casino Oaks by more than four lengths.
  • Race 11: Varatti (N'Rico Prescod/Craig Smith) won the $100,000 Speed to Spare Championship Stakes.
  • Race 12: August Rain (Amadeo Perez/Barbara Heads) was sent off the favorite and won the $200,000 Grade 3 Canadian Derby. The two horses entering from races at Hastings finished 1-2 in a field of 11. The Canadian Derby is one of three graded stakes in the country outside of Woodbine.
