New York also announced that the Saratoga Derby and Fourstardave will be contested Sunday and not Saturday.

To summarize Saratoga will be dark on Friday, active the next two days.

Harrah's Philadelphia has canceled.

Monmouth (NJ) is racing as of now.

Gulf may do a $10 million handle today the way things are going. Summertime in Miami, come on down!

That is the way to start a day. Belterra (OH) is the lone T-bred track operating on the national stage. The exacta paid over $500 to some fortunate bettors; $50 in the middle for the place horse.

It looks like Gulf (FL) and Woodbine (ON) have removed turf racing for today.

Belterra is flying solo.

Ruidoso (NM) opened with a 1-to-9 shot winning followed in exotics by 51-to-1 and 99-to-1. Can't do much better than that for chalky tri bettors. The return was $334.

Karl Broberg has retired from racing. He had 500+ wins back in 2018 and 2019 when he led North America by sizeable margins. This year's standings...

Frankie Dettori was replaced on three mounts at Woodbine by Emma Jayne Wilson.

Moira is scratched from the Canadian Stakes at Woodbine. 8-to-5 favorite.

  • Frankie Dettori and Jose Ortiz were both scheduled to ride at Woodbine today but neither did. Perhaps it was travel related. Both are listed on mounts at Colonial (VA) and Saratoga (NY) tomorrow in dual-entries.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: Roughly $17 million.
  • Card: Racing was off-the-turf and two turf graded stakes were moved to Sunday as part of a contingency plan.
  • Race 12: Halina's Forte (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Phil Bauer) won with a very powerful ride by the leading jockey at the meet and as the track caller stated "cleverly put on the rail." No margin for error.
  • Race 9: Surveillance (Tyler Gaffalione/Wayne Potts) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Troy Stakes. Potts hasn't tried too many graded stakes at NYRA to my memory in recent years. Big win for his barn. UPDATE: it is the second time Potts won this race and appears to be his second lifetime graded stakes win at any track. If so, very interesting.
  • Race 8: Showcase (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Saratoga Special. The 2-year-old Uncle Mo colt is undefeated in two starts and his future appears bright.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr, on a roll, and Luis Saez, cold earlier in the meet, both win three times. Ortiz rode the card today and combined with a natural hat trick to end the prior racing day, he enters Sunday on a 13 6-10 roll. He possesses has a sizeable gap as the leading rider at the meet, nine more victories than his closest challenger.
  • Phil Bauer 8 4-1-0 (50%) and Albert Stall 7 4-1-0 (57%), both won today and continue to put up stellar numbers with small stables.
Thistledown (Ohio):
  • "Best of Ohio": Big day for Ohio breds with five $100,000 purses.
  • Timothy Hamm, trainer, was 11 4-0-0 and won four of five races he entered. He won three stakes.
  • Race 8: Silent Rule (Brandon Tapara/Jay Bernardini) won by more than 11 lengths in a resounding debut performance.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 4: Silver Trinket (Eric Camacho/Brittany Russell) is deserved of a do-over. Something odd occurred in the stretch for the first-time starter and while not to blame the jock, he was given a rare chance to ride in 2022 by the trainer and awarded her with a 3 3-0-0 record that year. He was idle since then and has just five rides since the start of 2017. But today, perhaps an equipment malfunction or a jockey misstep but that horse needs another look.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Carlos David, who won yesterday with his two starters, began this day with three winners in succession. Not many trainers win five-in-a-row at one track.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 5: Nooni (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Sorrento Stakes in a reduced field of four 2-year-old fillies. Nooni, bred in Florida, cost $1.8 million at auction. Nooni is undefeated in two lifetime starts.
  • Race 8: Anisette (Umberto Rispoli/Leonard Powell) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Yellow Ribbon Handicap sent off the prohibitive favorite. She is now 10 6-3-0 lifetime including 7 5-2-0 since coming to America from Great Britain.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 10: It seemed the wait was interminable following a DQ but those who profited likely didn't care: the $.20 super paid over $23,000. Imagine having that for $1. The $1 Pick 5 paid over $24,000. The $1 Pick 6, however, paid out to those who won four legs ($666).
  • Race 9: Full Count Felicia (Rafael Hernandez/Kevin Attard) won the Grade 2 $200,000 Canadian Stakes in gate-wire style and opened it up with ease.

This should be a Sunday filled with superlatives.
Excellent card at Ellis today with many stakes including the Groupie Doll Stakes named after multiple graded stakes winner Groupie Doll.

Expect an announcement today from the Governor of Virginia that Colonial Downs will increase its race dates to 45 for next year. That is a sizeable increase. Also a Kentucky Derby prep race could be on the agenda. Churchill Downs owns the track in Virginia.
