i do wonder if mindframe's connections are considering replacing irad with someone else. if he doesn't stumble at the gate and rides mindframe the way he rode tapit trice today the result might have ended differently.

Damn. Nice looking Curlin filly just won for fun in the Laurel opener. Overwish, a $675,000 Mike Repole purchase, won comfortably in a debut under the direction of Jevian Toledo and Brittany Russell.

My favorite betting angle is to play a lone first-time starter when it offers long odds. Though the odds were adequate, I talked myself out of this wager due to the distance, rare for a debut starter.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $20 million.
  • Manny Franco rode four winners and perhaps more impressively were the odds: 8-to-1, 4-to-1, 10-to-1 and 14-to-1. Two of the winners were out for the first time.
  • Flavien Prat has my vote for top jockey in North America this year. He deserves to be elevated to such a lofty position. He had four winners on eight mounts (oddly, all losses were fourth place finishes).
  • Leading Jockeys Through Two Weeks: Flavien Prat, Irad Ortiz, Jr., Tyler Gaffalione, Manny Franco and Dylan Davis.
  • Leading Trainers Through Two Weeks: Chad Brown, Todd Pletcher, Mark Casse and Michael Maker.
  • Top Riders Under 10%: John Velazquez, Junior Alvarado and Luis Saez.
  • Cold Barns: Christophe Clement 1-for-19 and Rudy Rodriguez 0-for-16.
  • Race 6: Raging Sea (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Shuvee Stakes. The Curlin filly improved to 10 5-1-1. Shuvee, in a vote of top 100 horses of the 20th Century, ranked 74th (source: Bloodhorse). Sammy Hagar called "Riders Up."

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: Overwish (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) won by more than six lengths in a stylish debut. The Curlin filly was a $675,000 purchase by Mike Repole.

Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Race 12: Create Trouble (Jevian Toledo/Brittany Russell) finally broke his maiden after six losses and by more than eight lengths. Create Trouble was sold for $875,000 in 2022 but showed little then after a switch in trainers and a nine-month layoff finally found the winner's circle. Russell is 6 4-1-0 (67%) at the meet and is tied for most wins among all trainers.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Saffie Joseph, Jr. finished the card with a natural hat trick. Joseph should win the meet trainers' title rather handily as his total of 69 wins is 37 more than the closest competitor. Gulfstream runs 12 months a year but the current meet ends in late September.
Del Mar (California):
  • Race 4: Casalu (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), a $775,000 purchase, debuted to a 5 1/2 length win.

Fair to say that Meadowlands harness in New Jersey is the top circuit in the US. Handles are extraordinary. The Hambletonian, a $1,000,000 race, is August 3 with eliminations for that race and the Oaks this Saturday.

The Breeders' Cup is just three months away. Del Mar, the host location in November, has the lone Challenge Series race this weekend: Race 10 on Saturday.

In the opener, Bob Baffert debuts a rare New York-foal, $600,000 Usha who is a Tiz the Law filly.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Spirit Wind (Mike Smith/Saffie Joseph, Jr.) won the Grade 2 Honorable Miss handicap at 5-to-1, the second largest odds in a field of five. Smith and Joseph don't have the opportunity to team much but there is chatter about Spirit Wind entering the Breeders' Cup. Smith rode at Saratoga for the first time since 2021.

If Churchill Downs is not going to run turf racing in September, shouldn't Kentucky Downs pick up select dates? Ky.Downs just announced increased purses for its all-turf upcoming meet while Churchill is cutting turf races.
