At this point Brayden Schenn to the Leafs feels inevitable. I think the unanimous opinion on this board is the reported asking pirce (1st+Cowan/Minten/Danford) is a non-starter.

The reason I started this thread was to ask the questions: if St. Louis traded Brayden Schenn to Toronto for future considerations - would you, a Leafs fan, be happy with the move?

This would mean the Leafs are taking on Schenn until his age 36 season at 6.5M. This would leave the Leafs with:

X-Matthews-X
McMann-Schenn-Nylander
X-Domi-Jarnkrok
X-Kampf-Reaves

McCabe-Tanev
Rielly-Myers
OEL-Benoit

Woll
Stolarz

and 24.2M to fill out the remaining of the roster.

RFA: Dewar, Robertson, Knies, Timmins, Holmberg

For nothing? Yes. Of course yes. You can ditch Domi, Jarnkrok, Kampf, Reaves or whomever for a bit of extra cap space. Adding a winner at a position of need is a no-brainer.

I'd prefer a bit of retention, and I don't really want the Leafs to pay more than the 1st rounder. But I understand that the trade market isn't just a "pick what you want" type of situation.

Why did you make this? They want a lung a kidney and skin graft for the guy. we aren't getting him.

Even if you get him, our team is becoming very old in terms of hockey age. Especially if you re-sign JT. Hope we win the cup in the next 2 seasons. If not, then when? How do you replace the older players with younger players if you have 0 prospects? I'd take Schenn for free, but I mean our team is ancient.

The better way to phrase the question would be: if St. Louis bought out Brayden Schenn today, would you be happy if the Leafs gave him 6.5Mx4?

Yes, I would.

I'd obviously prefer a smaller number. And with a trade the Leafs might actually be able to get a smaller cap hit if STL retains, which would be great.

Can they even afford to bring back Tavares if they bring in Schenn? They'd have 24.2M in space without Marner, Tavares and Knies signed.

I would like him at 5mil or less and also Ranta if possible.
JT and Mitch would be looking at their replacements for the next 6-12 weeks and it would give management leverage.
If BS/MR out play JT/MM and help the Leafs with a big playoff you could be set.
Marner is looking at what is available come July 1 so why get caught with your pants down.

That would cost alot retain for 3 yrs not worth it.
He hasn't gotten any faster.

For free isn’t ideal, not getting the cap retention is tough.

If he’s not at $3.25M or $1.6M, why even go after him.

To me the appeal is spending assets to get a guy that’s a really good 3C option at a cap hit that’s reasonable for a mediocre 3C, and just value binge.

If the 50% retention isn’t included in the asking price of a 1st+prospect then I’d be looking elsewhere.

The bed was made here when the defense was signed to long-term contracts. This team has to win as many cups as it can in the next 4 years. After that, it will likely be a pretty significant re-tool.

If Matthews is unhealthy, absolutely not.

If Matthews is healthy, it depends on the cost.

Tbh I hate all of the options available, especially for what assets we have

I don’t want gourde, Nelson, Schenn because they are old and past their best hockey

Laughton is alright I guess, but he too is almost 31 which is a bit older than I want

One guy I wish we looked into was Morgan frost, he was younger and has way more upside than any of the options. Also probably wouldn't cost so much as he was traded for not that much.

Grabbing these guys means either 1) They walk after their contract or 2) They fall off hard really quick.

I read an offer today that was suspect but I paused to thonk about it.

Would you give up 2026 1st, Cowen, McMann and Jarnkrok for Rantanen for the rest of the year with the hopes of resigning him.

That value seemed pretty weak to me and I doubt that is enough but if it were I would be tempted

For free? Absolutely. Spend a bit to dump who you have to dump to make the cap work.

For what the rumoured cost is? Absolutely not… unless he scores the cup winning goal

Not at that price.
I do like thr thought of having Rantanen but not at the price of a 1st and cowen.
1st or Cowboy and McMann/Jarny I would be fine with.
Lets Mitch know we have his replacement if he wants to chase the money.
Give them both matching 8/12.5 offers and the first one that signs stays

You add Schenn for free every day of the week.

In our fun little hypothetical I also sign Bennett then we start cooking teams with something like the following

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McMann - Bennett - Nylander
Domi - Schenn - Cowan
Holmberg - Lorentz - Steeves

McCabe - tanev
Mo - Schenn
Benoit - OEL

How much are Bennett, Marner, Knies and Lorentz making in this scenario?

Who takes Jarnkrok/Kampf?

To Toronto
Brayden Schenn

To St. Louis
Nothing

To Chicago

Honestly, great questions. Didn’t really get that deep. I had a different lineup entirely without Marner, but didn’t want to derail this bad-boy.

How’s this one I’ve put more effort regarding being cap compliant into. I have full faith this could be done.

Knies - Matthews - Domi
Cowan - Bennett - Nylander
McMann - Schenn - Jarnkrok
Lorentz - Kampf - Steeves

McCabe - Tanev
Reilly - Schenn
OEL - Benny

I think I’ve seen that exact offer somewhere on Instagram lol

I’d do it, but I think it gets outbid.

We replace our 2LW with arguably the best player on our team, at least going into a playoff series.

We’d still have that Florida 2nd to grab a 3C and at that point I’d grab literally anyone

Downside is if we don’t win AND rantanen walks (highly likely), then you are left with danford as your only prospect.

It also probably gets beaten as a team will offer a higher end piece that’ll entice Carolina way more.

When people say “X team is all in” this is what it would mean. Selling everything for a cup run and maybe a chance at signing a guy.
