Value of: Brayden Point

Hughes is worth more than point, and I dont think it's particularly close
Listen, I like Hughes. He is exceptional, he skates like the wind, he produces offensively, but to say that his value is so far above Point that "you don't think its particularly close" is laughable. Point is so goddamn far ahead of pretty much any forward on that Vancouver roster as it is. Multiple cups, hardware to match, he is 29 coming off 51-44-95, 46-44-90, and 42-40-82 in the last 3 years. Teams hope and pray they can draft a Brayden Point, or even sign him. I wouldn't accept much else in a deal around Point.

My thing with the Point/Hughes value comparison:

1 - Hughes doesn't have heavy tread on the tires, so he is looking at another 800/900 games for a team that trades for him, whereas point is 29, but has 750 games under his belt and I dont know if he has the tread for another 800 games like Hughes does. Hughes is 4 years young and has 300 less games of wear

2 - Hughes doesn't have anything close to the talent that Point has had to work with in his career. EP is a solid #1 Center, but his struggles recently have given Hughes even less to work with. Point has played on absolutely stacked teams, with Hedman/Stamkos/Kucherov/Vasi. Point wont have that support in Van to help with opening space and giving him more to work with.

3 - Point right now is a top 15 center in the league. You could argue Hughes is the best defenseman on the planet right now. To me, they both play positions with similar importance, but Hughes is just at a higher level right now compared to Point. That's not a knock on Point, it's a view of their current production. Hughes has averaged over a PPG the past three seasons as a defenseman who also has solid defensive metrics

I dont think Point is a bad player, or that anyone wishes they wouldn't draft Point. I'm just saying his value is lower than Hughes in a vaccuum.

Point is like an 8.5 out of 10 on the value scale, Hughes is a 9.5 out of 10. You would give up a lot to get a player like point on your team, but you would give almost anything to have a player like Hughes on your team. Just my outsider view of the two players

Let’s imagine he’d waive his NMC. Which team(s) would be interested? And what would he fetch?

A majority of teams are starving for top 6 C's let alone 1Cs.

Combination of his age and contract every team would contact the lightning.

I know you say waive his NMC - Here's the thing he signed that glorious contract in a no tax state.

Dallas, Florida, Nashville, Vegas, and Seattle would be the most likely cities he would accept going to on that basis.

Remove Nashville and Seattle from a competitive stand point.
Remove Florida because same state.

So Dallas or Vegas.

Dallas just signed Rantanen and is in cap hell.

So a trade with Vegas -

Hertl @ 6.75 +
Now what is that + well that can be up for debate and quite frankly I may anger both fans of franchises so

Tuomas Uronen + 2025 2nd and 2026 2nd.

For

Point at 9.5 + 2026 3rd

This leaves them with 6.87 million (though this may not be exact as they can send guys down etc.)

4 forwards
1 defensemen
1 goalie

Let me know what y'all think.

McMichael, Sandin, 1st rounder or choice of either Mironichenko/Parascak
I could see this but would probably take C Hutson from the Caps if the Bolts have the stomach for another NCAA free agent. Maybe TB throws in Howard and takes two prospects off the Caps, like a combo of I Protas and/or Hutson/Parascak

If Tampa is looking for anything, it'll likely be more defensive depth. They need to eye a blue chip defender that can be the "guy after 27/77".

I don’t think Caps would move Hutson in any deal, or baby Protas to be honest since his brother is here long term. I think the caps would do Chelsey though to combo with Parasack. McMike, Sandin, Chelsey and Parascak get it done? Not sure Howard would sign here with how many wings we’ve got, probably why we weren’t in the running for Quinn Hutson.

Ideally, Flames throw in a prospect or two to help replenish a pretty dry well for TB (not Parekh, I understand), but I wouldn't be dissatisfied with a trade like this. Why so quick to take it? Is Andersson not as good as advertised? I feel like he would be pretty good with TB

Many Flames fans think we're 2-4 years out from contention.

The idea hinges purely on the unlikely concept that point wants out (hence Howard part of the deal). Flames need a C that will still be good when we exit rebuild and want to compete. Tampa wants players who are good now to continue competing for a few years.

For Anderson, there's also a perception that parekh has a higher ceiling than Andersson and may reach it within a few seasons. We also have Weegar to soften the blow for a top pairing RD. We need assets to get a centre we desperately need, so a few fans think Andersson in a trade for a C is acceptable.

Flames prospect pool/young guys also showing a lot of promise for potentially graduation, but we have too many bottom 9 and 4-6 dmen projected guys in our pipeline. We need more top 6 and top 4 options. Basically, we have Coleman, Cirelli, Hagel and Gourde calibre guys coming up which teams need. But we also need top tier guys to add to the core group.

No idea how that happens unless fortuitous events like the proposed Point concept lands in our lap. But that's also why it seemed like that poster was so eager to jump on the deal.
