Brandon Wheatkings 23/24

Wk must decide to either go all in with their good group of 19 yr olds or pick 4 possibly top prospects with their 4 picks in the first two rounds. Trying to acquire top end players in trades might be made much more challenging with Kelowna willing to sell the farm to top up their lineup as the Mem Cup hosts. Not sure you want to get into a bidding war with Kelowna. Wonder if they could get a US top player to commit as they pick first in the US draft or use the pick or player as trade bait? Myriad of decisions to be made before the expansion draft( not sure who they would give up), US draft, and Prospects draft. Interesting times to be sure.

Congrats to Surkan and Young WK prospects who were part of the Regina Pat Candians who won the Telus Cup yesterday. Sure hope Surkan grows a bit before September camp as he is very skilled but very small as well. Hope he can handle the rigors of the WHL. Too bad the WK could not re unite Surkan with his buddy Schultz but there is no way in he** that the Pats would move him. Not hearing much about possible plans the WK have for the 3 drafts coming up. Anyone hear any rumours.?

The US priority draft seems redundant for WK's. Not many want to come north. Maybe this new NCAA system

yes if they can play the trade bait that might be the best way to utilize the 1st overall selection. We seem to have a problem having them commit to WK country

Great pick for WK in Cruz Jim. Very dynamic d man. . Very highly rated. I am sure their 2nd choice likely was Mateychuck. Now we need a forward. Lets get a big guy.

Wow! Trading a 1st and 2nd round pick this year plus other picks for two guys who are going to be OA players this year. I cannot see what the the team was thinking. .looks like a vast over payment to me. Ouch! What does this do for the 4 OA they already have. Head scratcher.

Heard Quinn Mantei is heading to school next year.

That is likely why this trade was made as I can believe Mantei is going to school. I sure hope that Mistlebacher is coming for sure. I would imagine the trade would not have been made if he was not coming. The more I think about it the more I think the move is good and was made necessary to take advantage of McQueen’s last year. PA will be good next year but so will the WK. 40 goal scorers are hard to find. Burzynski is a very good d men. Lots of size on the back end next year with Arpin, Burzynski, Pantelas, Allard, and Boehm. The draft picks can be recouped. 1st pick in the Us draft may net a very good prospect or can be used as trade chip.

interesting beginning for sure. My comments I made in Mid April seems to now have been addressed with this huge trade yesterday. Petr is probably done here as a import/OA player, Mantei departure and Barney's AHL career seem to have us with down to the competition of Michels and Johnson remaining for 1 OA position.
Are there more moves in the works?

I can see trading Petr to alleviate the OA and import situation (allowing team to draft 2 more imports if they keep Belusko and 3 if they do not keep him.) but to Saskatoon a team in your own division does seem rather strange. He could come back to haunt us next season. The team’s first 2 draft picks were excellent picking Jim and Fayad from the NAX powerhouse. The team is down to two OAgers having to choose one. Either Michael’s or Johnson. Not sure which way I would go.

Chances are we are done in the trade department until September when we have to address the OA situation. I am thinking Michels has the upper hand on this. First off he doesn't appear to have the injury issues Johnson has had yearly. A good third line player unless Gavin craps the bed this coming year.

Gavin is 19 this year so the OA competition is between Michels and Johnson and yes Michels would have the upper hand given his versatility and the fact he is not a band aid like Johnson appears to be. Looks like the WK first pick in the US draft will sign with the team. Looks like a very good prospect so losing the picks in the SC trade does not hurt so much because the US prospect is like having another first round pick.
