Value of: Brandon Tanev to the Leafs

The Leafs have been a playoff team for the last almost decade now and have been buyers pretty much every year along the way. The have little in terms of talented youth who would be available in trade

The Leafs are likely not going to be in on any "impact" players (or simply the most sough-after ones) this TDL as they won't be able to beat other teams' offers.

Which I think is a good thing because it forces restraint, and therefore not wasting the very few assets they have on another likely failed playoff run. While they only really need some bottom 6 help, they need a solid C and another forward that both can bring some offense. And in both cases, either they go bargain bin hunting or they're likely going to get out-bid.

The one good thing I've heard is that Treliving is looking for players with term vs. pure rentals, which is certainly smarter. Unfortunately, unless it's a bad contract they're taking on, again, they're going to get beat by better offers.

Brandon Tanev is a solid bottom 6 upgrade but he's not am impact player.

At 50% I would want Cowan coming back. Gourde is still an impact player, especially in the playoffs. At 50% he's a pretty good steal. Otherwise probably a 1st or decent prospect + 2nd + 3rd gets it done for both of them. But the Leafs are pretty bare so...

If Cowan gets traded, it will be for a better player than Gourde.

Absolutely! I don't really disagree. But I think that's Gourde's value at 50%. Not much else on the Leafs that would be interesting that has anywhere close to the amount of value Cowan does. But I think we could get a Cowan from another team if we retained 50, so no point in offering him for less to the Leafs. If we don't want to retain, then the package I mentioned without Cowan would be more than enough for both.

Recently I made a thread about Brandon Tanev to the Leafs because I do think that's going to happen, it remains to be seen if It's a deadline deal or in free agency.

But what about a Yanni Groude and Brandon Tanev package?

I know Yanni Groude is hurt right now but he's scheduled back sometime after 4 nations, It's not a season ending injury injury so to me he's still a viable option.

I said this about ROR when they got him, and I'll say it about Yanni Groude.

I wouldn't care if he played a single game for Leafs in the regular season, Yanni Groude would be strictly a playoff move.

His name is Yanni Gourde.

Just because Cowan is the Leafs top prospect doesn't mean he's one of the most valuable prospects in the league. He's a very good top prospect for sure, but Gourde at 50% is also a very valuable piece, and tacking Tanev on only increases that value.

I know someone will take issue with my description of Cowan even though I'm a Knights fan and have watched him far more than most Leafs fans, but to be clear I'm not saying he's bad or that he's not good or elite or a top prospect. Just that there are a lot of teams with comparable prospects that aren't their top prospects. I'm not asking for a teams top prospect. I'm asking for Cowan from the Leafs because he's about the only prospect you have that has the value I think a 50% Gourde would require. Other teams have lower picks and a lot more prospects.

I think Gourde's value without retention is somewhere between a 2nd + 3rd and a 1st. His value with retention is a good or elite prospect + 2-3 picks in the first 90. Tack Tanev on and he's worth at least a 3rd and someone might overpay for him to the tune of a 2nd+ which just adds to the deal. There's a ton of prospects I'd be happy to trade Gourde for, but really only one of them is on the Leafs unfortunately.
