I wonder if they do something around Saad for Perron as a base. No one is taking Saad without cap going back. Whether the Senators would kick in assets, and what assets those would be, I won't guess.

For anyone unfamiliar with what is going on with Perron: David Perron returns to Senators after baby daughter's life-saving surgery

As far as I understand it, St.Louis is still where his family considers their home. (Kind of like Karlsson with Ottawa). If they have roots there, they might be welcome to a reset. He apparently has an upper body injury, but it is unclear if the time away is related to the above situation. They haven't placed him on LTIR, but as we all know LTIR is easy enough to manipulate for older players where a lingering injury that they could choose to play through could be enough to allow them to pass (or fail?) a third party medical exam.

Forsberg was hurt training before the game last night. If Forsberg is injured for a while, a Sogaard for Hofer swap could be a logical starting point since I doubt Ottawa trusts Sogaard as their NHL backup at this point and his ceiling (however unlikely) and extra year of cost-control might appeal to St.Louis vs Hofer who will be waiver eligible.

Bruins fans are in love with the player, but on impact, he is realistically a plus bottom-6er. On a reasonably competitive team, like a team you're expecting to be comfortably in the playoffs, he's a 3RW. On a contending team, he ought to be on a 4th line. He's produced at even strength, but most of that was during a literally historically good season for the team, and when you watched the games, he was the worst player on that 3rd line plainly and clearly by the eye.

I think the value is a lot closer than Bruins fans will admit, but I still think the Blues add like a C+ future asset. 4th rounder some such crap

Seems reasonable. I like the player but we've already got enough wingers that could theoretically play center. Blues fans would likely want a more natural center but of course we're not expecting a huge return for Saad considering how he's played this year.

For what exactly? Our cap situation is pretty seeable until any serious extensions are up. Fowler, Leddy, Broberg, Holloway, Texier and M Joseph all come off the books in a year and a half. That’s nearly 20m. Half will most likely be eaten up by Broberg and Holloway. But the year following Krug and Faulk come off. It’s pretty doubtful as is Krug ever comes off of LTIR.

We’re going to have a plethora of forward ELCs coming in over the next 3 years.

I just don’t foresee anyway unless we go full Oilers July 1 that we can be in a desperate cap situation.
I don't follow the Blues and I must have been mistaken.

I just looked at CapWages and thought the Blues would be well over the salary cap if and when Torey Krug comes off LTIR both this year and next, even if they let Radek Faksa walk and replace his contract with a league-minimum deal.

But, what would I know?

Krug likely isn't playing again.

Krug's never playing again, and he knows it; I felt horrible for the guy after his reaction during the press conference announcing it. The kind of injury he's on LTIR for has never had a defenseman come back from it; we're talking about a completely decimated area of his ankle that's needed to skate backwards.

It's time for him to return to PIT. PIT can move out some cheap contract and a pick for him. Acciari / Nieto / Pulju / Poulin + a 3rd - 5th depending on the player.
I won't pretend to watch enough Blues hockey to have an informed opinion, but Acciari+3rd seems like highway robbery if Saad can still skate.

Taylor Hall straight up. Saad will become a decent forty point guy Hall will rediscover his game and we can lose a third Saad trade.

Nah. Saad has become redundant because he moved down the pecking order behind younger players like Holloway, Neighbours and Bolduc, while Snuggerud and Dvorsky will very likely also get their shot late in the season. Trading Saad for Hall means we're swapping a redundant forward for another redundant forward.

The rumored asking price is apparantly (a) pick(s), but IMO if we're moving him for another player it's probably for a 3C or an upgrade at 3RD. In case of the latter, either P.O. Joseph or Perunovich also has to be moved, either in this trade or a seperate one.

Lol is this a joke? How many 1sts are you adding to Sogaard?

Saad has always been a Shark killer. What are the Blues looking for here?
2nd round pick.

2nd round pick.

I think that St.Louis is going to have to take back money to even get a minimal return. If they make it cap in/cap out for another team, maybe they get back a 2nd in a very optimistic scenario for them.

If no cap is going back, it's a 4th or something like that, with the cap going to the other team being the most valuable asset in the trade, even ahead of the player.

Look at recent trades with players who are underperforming with term and a NTC. It's not reasonable to expect any sort of return in these scenarios.

Ultimately, I could be wrong - but we will find out soon who trades for Saad, what he goes for, and how either taking back cap or not taking back cap might affect the return.

Of course cap will impact the return. I should have been more explicit, but I’m assuming 50% retention would be required for a 2nd. Taking back an expiring contract wouldn’t be an issue for the Blues either, but we would expect that to factor into the compensation as well.

That’s 2 playoff runs for a guy with a proven playoff track record who is also responsible defensively - all at a $2.25 cap hit. That’s a valuable asset to a contending team up against the cap. Don’t think a late 2nd is too much to ask.

Your proposal of Sogaard for Hofer is completely out to lunch tho.
