How do Lightning fans feel about the shocking trade that nabbed him for two first-rounders (and more)? I know it may seem like an obvious one given his stats of the last three years, but as an Avs fan I mostly remember him being invisible in the 2022 playoffs and thinking that the Bolts didn't get a lot of bang for the buck to support their threepeat. Not hating the player, I just think it's an interesting case of a win-now/keep-it-going dilemma.
I would do that trade again any day of the week and 100 times on Sunday. He played those playoffs with a broken foot, was still a lot more inexperienced than he is now and was tasked with shutdown duties if I remember correctly. He's gotten better every year he's been here and he's still improving.

You would be lucky if you got a guy like Hagel with either of those picks and most likely you wouldn't. Probably my favourite player to watch on the team after Kucherov.

He was already excellent in Chicago. Traded for two firsts…all you need to know about him and his development there. Just didn’t fit the timeline, unfortunately. Sorry to see him go, miss frequently watching him play, and very happy he’s doing great in Tampa. Great trade for both teams.
Exactly. Hagel was already looking damn good in Chicago and on an upward trajectory. This level is past what was been expected but he was a huge value even at the time given his growth and contract which still had an extra absolute bargain year left.

What's funny is you can go dig up that trade thread and 90% of HFB was outraged that Tampa gave up two 1st rounders for "LULZ wut is a Hagel durrrrr".

Better question is why didn’t Chicago keep him? He’d be perfect on Bedard’s wing. I think the Hawks burned things down a tad too much and put Bedard in a position where he’s relied upon too heavily for a first/second year undersized player.

Two 1st round picks for a team just entering a complete rebuild at the time was a pretty tempting offer. In retrospect - sure, he'd be nice to have still but they sold him at an ideal point if they were just trying to liquidate a "found" player into assets, because at the time of the trade - he still had 1.5 years left on a bargain basement deal. That's what really got him the second 1st rounder in return, it was that contract.

A brilliant move for Tampa, but I don't think you can dog Chicago too much here.

Incidentally, when Tampa traded that entire draft class of picks for Jeannot, I really gave them the benefit of the doubt based on Hagel. Again, I thought Tampa was picking up a guy on a cheap deal with huge growth potential. But instead of turning into the new Tom Wilson, Jeannot kind of sputtered along as a low-line heavy. You win some, you lose some, when you take risks.

That was his first (quarter of ) season in Tampa—7 points in 22 games. Once he healed up and adjusted…here we are.
Great deal, one of our best players. Him and Cirelli on PK is probably one of the top duos in the business.

Same with the Habs who had him at their training camp as an invitee after Buffalo didn't sign him. He may have needed the kick in the pants to get to work on his game of having two different teams think he wasn't good enough.
True, sometimes that is how it works

Hawks dont have Bedard if we don't blow it up and go into rebuild

Hagel + Debrincat + Dach all were traded in moves that were beginning of rebuild (Hagel was traded in late March while Debrincat/Dach were traded at draft)

Those 3 getting traded netted Hawks four 1st round picks and additional picks

Hagel = Two 1sts (Moore + Boisvert, Hawks traded up a few spots to grab Boisvert)
Debrincat = 1st (Korchinski) + 2nd (Ludwinski) + 3rd (Spellacy)
Dach = 1st (Nazer) + 3rd (Hayes)

He doesn't do anything really well but he's just a really really good hockey player and a dog on the puck

Thanks for the reply. Definitely agree that Hagel's worth more than the two firsts, especially given that he was on a sweetheart contract that was a godsend for the Lightning. Still kind of wondering if they should've gone for more established talent specifically to maximize their chances for the 2022 cup run, but the broken foot can explain Hagel's lack of contribution. Not the luckiest year between that and Point's injury.

Hagel > Nylander

Better player, better contract.

I got a thread locked for asking who was the better value after Nylander signed. I was told I was trolling.
Significantly better contract and value, he costs half as much as Nylander.

Not the better player, not even close. If you wanna be fooled the way you guys fooled yourselves about Sergachev being some elite 1D, be my guest.

Better value, absolutely Hagel ainec. Better player, Nylander.

This year? Hagel is definitely the better player regardless of contract

Who fooled themselves regarding Serg being elite 1D?
