59 points in 56 games that season. Maybe he didn't "blow the doors off", but he was ~ a point per game.
It's mostly coming even strength. 8th in the league ES points.

He seems to hit a new level each year.

He was a 6th round pick and was barely over PPG (59 points in 57 games) as a 19 year old. Buffalo had to sign him to a contract and probably didn’t feel like he would be a player for their 50 contract limit. He dropped from 31 goals the year before to 18 that year as well. He played 9 games less that year but he really didn’t progress his point totals and his goal scoring dropped.

as good as he is there’s no proof he would’ve developed the same way on bad teams in Buffalo and Chicago
He was already excellent in Chicago. Traded for two firsts…all you need to know about him and his development there. Just didn’t fit the timeline, unfortunately. Sorry to see him go, miss frequently watching him play, and very happy he’s doing great in Tampa. Great trade for both teams.

And there’s your answer (and not the tired Sabres gonna Sabres).

I am guessing many other franchises would have passed on signing their 6 round pick who regressed during his age 19 season.

How do Lightning fans feel about the shocking trade that nabbed him for two first-rounders (and more)? I know it may seem like an obvious one given his stats of the last three years, but as an Avs fan I mostly remember him being invisible in the 2022 playoffs and thinking that the Bolts didn't get a lot of bang for the buck to support their threepeat. Not hating the player, I just think it's an interesting case of a win-now/keep-it-going dilemma.

Hagel > Nylander

Better player, better contract.

I got a thread locked for asking who was the better value after Nylander signed. I was told I was trolling.
Agree completely.

Hagel is truly the most underrated player in the league IMO. All situations player that consistently plays 20+min a night against the other teams best players and still convincingly tilts the ice.

Likely to be 25min a night guy in the playoffs.

Hagel is definitely not a better player than Nylander and I’m the biggest leafs hater on God’s green earth
