Positively surprised by the suspension. That's a step in the right direction when enforcing the rules in regard of player safety.

Hagel thought he touched the puck, I thought so too before the replay. He’s not going to purposefully take a major penalty down 1-0 in the third period, lots of idiots in this thread
Obviously the intent was to remove Barkov from the 3rd with concussion protocol.

If Hagel is in next game, its hard to fathom him or another Tampa star not getting seriously cheap shotted.

I've never seen Bennett so angry in my life, he could barely bring himself to answer the question. Yeah, one of the Tampa stars is going to get ringed up pretty good.
I agree it’s going to be nasty but Florida would be wise to not get too nutty. Up 2-0 going home is a good place to be.

That said, Bennett can be as angry as he wants but he’s got zero ground to stand on. Hagel just pulled a Bennett there. Just ask Bennett’s new teammate.

Good hit, BS suspension. It wasn't even interference, Barkov touched the puck a second earlier. Multiple guys have taken x-checks to the head or neck these playoffs and nothing but this hit is what they focus on?

Edit: Looking again I guess Barkov didn't touch the puck but he was definitely attempting to. I think you're still allowed to hit a guy reaching for the puck.
But you’re not.

Cool, except even if it wasn't interference, it was charging. The puck being there wasn't the decider on this hit's legality.

Hard for me not to see the league as clearly making the wrong call on this one. Do we want hockey to become soccer? Guys can throw big hits. It was a two minute interference call because Barkov didn't touch the puck. That's it. 5 and a game is fine from the refs because they have to make the call in real time and it was a big hit.

A suspension here is a joke. It stinks of "don't hit star players." Hagel does this to Nate Schmidt and it probably doesn't even get called.

More than anything, I don't want hockey to be a sport where this kind of thing is a suspension. It's a full contact, physical sport. That's a lot of the appeal. I'd rather see more of this than less.

Thought it would be atleast 2 games. Dirty play. But it is the playoffs so I get it.

Tampa dodged a huge bullet having him only get 1 game

I love rough, physical hockey but that was a dangerous play by Hagel

Not a fan of either team but cool with the 1 game suspension. Was a garbage hit on a player that didn’t touch the puck.

Major for interference & game seems fair.

Yep. The guy that did this to Mathew Knies 2 years ago, putting him out of the playoffs should take a seat on this one.

Thought he touched the puck? What bullshit. Havel was going for the hit. The puck was behind the net by the time Hagel hit Barkov. Hagel has been a whiny punk since the start of the series, and meant to hit Barkov.

But you’re not.

If you say so. I've seen it about a million times someone taking a hit while reaching for the puck. But let's say you're right, it's still at worst 2 mins for interference because the hit was clean otherwise. How that's a suspension and x-checks to the head of multiple players these playoffs don't even warrant a review is just beyond parody.

Can’t speak for Hagel’s eyes because there is no clear view, but his head was fixated on Barkov the whole time. The puck was well past Barkov when Hagel hit him. He knew exactly what he wanted to do, and deserves what he got, and what he will eventually get.

"Thought he touched the puck" isn't an argument. If it was, all sorts of dirty interference hits would be fine since a player could argue he thought the puck was touched if it is anywhere within 5 feet of the person hit.

it would be if they didn't ignore much worse infractions. Like crosschecks to the face. hell Wilson should have got a longer suspension for following Anderson into the bench and continuing to try to throw punches while the linesman was in the way.

They ARE all fine. There is 40 instances of interference every game not called. As we know the league doesn't give a damn about player safety so they chose to single this one out for a reason of their own

How many uncalled interferences are greenlight hits and not the standard 'sort of slide into the guys path accidentally on purpose' defense that's been allowed forever?

Probably a few. And the Panthers specialize in cheap shots so they shouldn 't be surprised.

It WAS NOT well past Barkov.
