The Sabres need someone exactly like Brandon Carlo to pair with Owen Power. Carlo - a right-hand shot - is a veteran with size, and a willingness to use it. What would Buffalo have to offer to convince the Toronto Maple Leafs to trade Carlo to them?

More than what they gave.
So a B prospect. 1st,4th

Plus the add

Sabres wont overpay

I would need 9th OA in that deal to trade him.

If leafs win a cup or make SCF this year just keep him and go for it again next year

If we lose to FLR or ECF and do quick retail than I'd see what his price is.

But Sabres would have to overpay for a player that fits their team and them being a divisional rival

Any interest from either side on a deal based around Carlo for Byram?
What would be the add?
Since Byram has to be signed this summer - while Carlo has two more seasons - the Leafs might be leery of him. Mattias Samuelsson might be a different story - he's signed for three more seasons, and is three years younger than Carlo. The upside for Buffalo would be that Carlo is better defensively and more physical - plus he earns less than Samuelsson. If the Sabres made that trade - obviously with other pieces involved - they could then entice Byram to re-sign with the promise he'd be on the first pair with Rasmus Dahlin, while Owen Power - and the entire team - would benefit from having someone like Carlo paired with him.

I like Samuelsson but he misses WAY to much time so I wouldn't even consider that unless there was more coming from Buffalo.

Not seeing why the Leafs move on from a cheap, good defensive defenseman.

Especially considering they would not likely get back what they gave up for him.

Toronto isn’t selling on Carlo.

The Sabres (and others like Detroit and Montreal) will be better off pursuing a Nic Hague, who Vegas isn’t going to be able to keep, and hoping he takes that next step, becoming a Carlo.

Sometimes it’s all about more opportunity and because he can file for arbitration, that’s going to happen somewhere other than Vegas.

Guess is, someone will send Vegas a 2nd rounder (or equivalent) for Hague, and there’s a good chance of it turning out to be a great move. Similar to when Tampa quietly traded for Cernak.

Sabres trade Byram for a "style" defenseman swap. Otherwise, you get Rosen Samuelsson and a 3rd.

How are Carlo's defensive 5v5 numbers? If he is riding with Power, he needs to be strong at 5v5 and on the PK.

IIRC, they’ve been rough for the last few years. He had a couple good seasons in Boston when the team was still good, but his reputation seems to be a product of those good teams more than a contributing factor in them.

Leafs aren’t touching their defence at all. It still has flaws but this is the best it’s been in decades and all of the pieces are signed to multi year deals with good contracts.

They are spending about $26m on their 7 D next season. Thats incredible value and is completely needed in order to keep their high priced forwards

Looks like we are both good here then.

He has zero willingness to use his size and has an entire career to prove it.
