i think the whole color scheme they used made it bad. the design itself wasnt awful but minor adjustments could have been made. this is the chance to make it right in a sense with the color scheme

If they did something with gradients like our current thirds and made better looking lightning bolts on the sleeves (and make them silver not clashing yellow), it could end up pretty badass. But since the point is to make it retro they can't change it too much I guess. That first concept on eBay that was linked a few days ago seems pretty close to what a reverse retro should be.

2012 was a while ago, before Instagram (before it got really popular at least), so there are probably some blogs out there with more info, but I found these two videos.

The main thing is that they took areas that were somewhat generic, unused, or bland, and made something out of it. While they did take out seats, it was mostly about adding. I do remember entering the building through a little cubbyhole that had a sharp left turn to an escalator. This changed with the main entrance redesign.

Keep in mind that this around the time of the St. Pete Times Forum - Tampa Bay Times Forum name change.

How they found a way to widen the concourses was the biggest surprise to me.
