BT's put up back to back to back 30G+ season's. But, 30% of his production comes on the PP. I'd assume Laf would put up similar production if he was getting the same ice time, but he's nowhere as physical. Laf has a slightly higher offensive ceiling, but Brady's better.

Their 5v5 scoring is essentially the same since the start of last year so I guess the question is whether Laf would produce as much in those PP minutes. Brady has been good but not so efficient on the PP that it’s unreasonable to expect Laf to match it, but so far Laf hasn’t produced well in his PP minutes at all. Only 10 points in 225 minutes the past three years. Though not much of that has been on the first unit

You also can’t just compare their 5v5 scoring and not acknowledge that Laf’s been stapled to Panarin. Tkachuk also has the better 5v5 P/60 while having a lower secondary assist rate.

2.36 vs 2.17. Primary pt rate is 2.07 vs 1.77

The rates are better but the difference in actual minutes and performance are so minor I didn’t bother mentioning it. Tkachuk has played about 70 fewer minutes and has 2 more 5v5 points, and 5 more 5v5 primary points. I’d say it’s within typical variance range, though Tkachuk has the better track record anyway so it’s probably giving Laf the benefit of the doubt too much. Panarin is a factor as well (though Stutzle is no slouch), so it probably all adds up in Tkachuk’s favour.

I think playing with Panarin also hurts Laf's defensive numbers. That guy is a terrible defensive influence. I think it has made Lafreniere play worse defense because he sees the example of Panarin being able to play no defense because he's one of the best offensive players in the league.
