It looks like Ottawa will once again miss the playoffs. The Sens need a shake up. With Brady Tkachuk seemingly being in trade talk headlines, and the connection to Tom Fitzgerald (cousin) and New Jersey (wife from there) can't help but think he might want to be a Devil.

My proposal:

To New Jersey:
Brady Tkachuk

To Ottawa:
Dawson Mercer
Seamus Casey
2025 2nd round pick (NJ)
2025 2nd round pick (EDM)
2026 1st round pick (NJ)
2027 2nd round pick (NJ)

Wouldn't do this for less than Nemec, but then NJ probably wouldn't wanna do it either for that price.

Not a fan of either team but thats essentially 3 1sts and 3 2nds lol. That's not exactly "quantity". I mean ita lacking a headliner prospect in some regards but I dont think its all that laughable either.

The only people who think it's a laughable offer are the people who essentially have unrealistic expectations for almost every major NHL trade.

The majority of trades involving star players in the NHL are more often than not "quantity over quality" returns.

That's a lot of value.
Nobody said it's laughable or not valuable, just that quantity probably doesn't get it done in this case.

Two dozen teams would offer up practically anything to land a prime Brady and atleast a handful surely beat this offer.

If Brady were available for any reason, there's isn't much I wouldn't offer from the Jets to get him. Hellebuyck and Morrissey are probably the only pieces we can't afford to trade if we intend to go all in.

I disagree but whatever. Doesnt really matter either way. Brady is a unicorn in his play style but not his stat sheet or apparent impact on the game. Id love him on my team. Im sure "two dozen" teams would. But thats a more than fair price for him and what he brings. No one is beating that offer unless like I already said theirs a better regarded prospect involved hence knocking down some of the picks..either way not my pig not my farm so I dont really care to argue

I’ve been thinking about the Jets and if he’d be a fit there or not. They def could use a player like him, but wasn’t sure if he’d fit their system. Adding him and another defenseman would make them very very difficult to beat.

I think he'd fit in perfectly with us. He's a big solid forechecker who can add to our offense. Those types are worth their weight in gold come playoff time when the games gets more physical.

Better do it before July 1st cause there’s no way Brady would waive to live in the Peg

The f*** is this post?

Reality based on the trade mentioned in the OP. The Devils don't have the cap room to add Tkachuk at his full contract. He makes like $8m. Mercer going the other way only is $4m. So where does the other $4m come from?

Tongue-in-cheek I suggested that 50% retention would be the only way the cap numbers work in that original offer. My main point is that the OP is unrealistic for the Devils bc of the cap. There either needs to be a different offer that matches the contract dollars or the trade has to be with a different team.

Not suggesting Tkachuk isn't worth a haul in return - he is - but the proposal ignores the reality that is the cap.

This would be a draft day trade:

:sens
Simon Nemec
Dawson Mercer
2026 First Round pick (top 10 protected, unprotected in 2027)
2025 Second Round Pick (best of the 3)

:devils

Brady Tkachuk

At this point, you have take risks. Devils get three cracks at the cup with Brady. Devils are a now team, those picks they’ll trade will be 3-5 years away from playing. There is no room for Nemec and Mercer is a salary cap casualty.

Ottawa comes away with 2 significant pieces, which will be big building blocks and fills needs for their team in the top 6 and top 4, and 2 relatively significant futjres.

In the summer the cap will go up another 4 million, trade Mercer, potentially buy out Palat? If this is a summer trade.

Figured it was early enough in the season that it was an in-season proposal. Palat buyout does add some room if it comes to pass (I think it completely depends on if Playoff Palat makes an appearance or not). But they also need to sign Luke to his 2nd contract this off-season.

Devils fans overrate Casey. The ask would be Nemec+, which isn't absurd or anything. Probably Nemec, Mercer, 1st.

Brady is on pace for a great season, a career high. Has three years remaining at a pretty good cap hit. His value has probably never been higher.

I guess it entirely depends on whether you think NJ is a Tkachuk away from Stanley Cup contention?

Unfortunately, there's this thing called the salary cap. So this looks like a summer trade, in which case the NMC has kicked in and Brady has more of a say about where he wants to go.
