Because that worked out great for Calgary...

It hasn't been that terrible for them, has it?

I know Huberdeau has taken a step back, but Weegar has been awesome for them and is locked in on a great contract for a while. And they still have a 1st round pick from that trade this year, which they can use or trade for someone.

They're already in the playoff mix, and with the emergence of Dustin Wolf, aren't likely to need any sort of full scale rebuild.

For a guy who wanted out, they did very well.

He should be sitting out tonight if he thinks he needs to miss any Sens games to rest and/or recover. Not a fan of that. Team pays his salary and should be the priority if there's any question about availability.
Yeah, if he misses any time because of this, I'm gonna be pretty pissed about it, as will a lot of other people. This is an optional tourney and if he selfishly prioritizes national pride over the Sens? Absolutely shameful behavior.

Calgary got one of the best trade returns of any player in recent memory.

Huberdeau had just put up 115 points and was the NHL's 4th highest scorer from 2018/29 to 2021/22.

Weegar was an established top pairing defenseman, fresh off a 44 point campaign.

And on top of those two they also got a 2026 1st and what was a solid prospect at the time in Schwindt.

Criticizing that return can only be done with the benefit of hindsight. No one expected Huberdeau's production to be cut in half upon moving to Calgary.

Absolutely. M.Tkachuk returned a top line forward, a top pairing defenseman and a 1st round pick. Not shabby considering the situation Calgary was in.

An "equivalent" return would be something Roope Hintz + Thomas Harley + 1st from Dallas. I don't think anyone would scoff at that (not that I think that's what we'd get)...

Or something like Colton Parayko + Dylan Holloway + 1st from St. Louis.

Maybe in 3.5 years as a UFA. No chance Ottawa trades Brady to Florida once that NMC kicks in.

“Same situation as Matthew”. Not really. Matthew was going into his last year before UFA, and the Flames were able to get a bidding war going which is why the return was so high.
It would sucks but let's have a bidding war on Brady

Equivalent returns are always difficult to determine, but it definitely looked like a very pricy acquisition from the Panthers at the time.

I remember thinking Weegar, Schwindt and a 1st was a lot to give up to get slightly younger (4 years between Tkachuk and Huberdeau) and add some toughness.

Huberdeau going from being an elite level offensive player to a 2nd line forward immediately after signing an extension skews the return in hindsight big time.

I think the bolded is a more accurate hypothetical return. Hubderdeau and Weegar were solid returns at first glance, but they were also approaching 30. Not sure

He also replied to someone saying they know it’s just podcast banter with “it’s not just podcast banter”, so basically insinuating he has sources.

Didnt we deal with this already in the offseason and what not? Is it possible sure. More likely just someone talking out of their *** for clicks. Plus honestly we have brady signed until he is 28/29 but with the style of play he plays im going to wait before making any sort of move

I dunno, every game is crucial with only 26 of them left, and we'll likely be without Norris and Pinto on Saturday as well. So if we also lose Brady, winning against Montreal will be quite the feat without 3 of our top-6 forwards.
Every game is crucial dont get me wrong, at the same time since we didnt call up a second forward it seems like one of pinto/norris will be ready. Green said its a possibility for both to be ready. I rather brady plays and we get past all of our injuries but if there was a time in our remaining schedule to miss a game it would be now.

Plus it would not do us any favors with brady or the rest of the team if we got him to sit in the finals

Huberdeau was 28, Weegar was 27.
Flames extending either of them would mean the bulk of a long-term deal would involve them being in their 30s (which are reasonable bets to expect player decline, granted not a sharp decline like Huberdeau's).

In the event we trade Tkaptain, i'm fine with a return similar to what MTKahcuk got in terms of on paper value, but hope we could pull in younger guys with more long term upside

To the bolded: not really.

We are in a donnybrook for the playoff race and every point counts. While we have some very winnable games coming up, we can't afford to lose them.

As for doing favour's, I don't think all that many fans will care if Brady sits tonight. I know I sure won't. If he's more upset about missing the finals than doing everything he can to help get the sens into the playoffs, that only reflects poorly on him as this team's captain.

If we were forced into a trade, I'd prioritize players that could gel with Stützle.

Hypothetically... something around Tkachuk + Perron (I'd force him in, they have the cap space to take him on and still lives there so would probably be open to it) to St.Louis for Kyrou + Neighbours + picks.

Then you could run:

Neighbours (forechecking puckhound) - Stützle (skilled playmaker) - Kyrou (fast shooter)

This lineup would come in at $88.5M, leaving $7M for a 3rd and 4th line winger:

Neighbours - Stützle - Kyrou
Greig - Norris - Batherson
XXX - Pinto - Giroux (@5M)
XXX - Ostapchuk - Amadio

Sanderson - Zub
Chabot - Jensen
Kleven (@2.25M) - Matinpalo (@1M)

Ullmark
Merilainen (@1M)

Sebrango as the extra.

You could honestly argue we'd be a better team...

That's the thing about Brady, his trade value is so high compared to his on ice contributions that it would be pretty easy to get a return that makes the Senators better.

That forward group is so soft, we would get killed out there.

To be fair, Strickland is from St. Louis and has ties to the Tkachuks, so it is at least worthy of discussion.

I don’t really care if Brady leaves as a UFA. I would have liked to think if we were contending he’d extend but maybe it’s wishful thinking. Nothing we can really do if that’s what he wants, but if he’s specifically set on going to Florida only or he forces a trade there, that does concern me.

i could honestly not be remembering it properly but wasnt strickland part of that biznasty rumor about brady earlier?

i know we have had a couple of set of rumors about brady supposedly wanting out so kind of losing track

the way i see it is if brady was that unhappy i dont think keith would have done that interview recently to pressure ottawa to add. That maybe a hopeful way of thinking about it though

I’ve also lost track but I don’t think so.

I don’t think he’s trying to leave now (though if we miss the playoffs, who knows)… but to me if we keep Brady past July 1st, we have to be pretty certain he won’t force a trade and will at least finish his contract here as we try to contend.

Because for a team on the cusp, 3 playoff runs with Brady Tkachuk would still hold a lot of value. Think of teams that are close (or want to make some runs and a splash) but are located in less "desirable" locations: Minnesota, Winnipeg, Utah.
I don't think teams that are on the cusp of a cup run are not about to give up anything significant off of their roster, so hopefully you'd be ok with picks and prospects.

They had far less options and leverage than we do right now.
I just think Cgy is an example of how things can go awry, not an example to follow.

It would be like saying if we could make a trade for an elite player for a pittance like SJ did to get Karlsson we should do it. In theory, SJ got a great deal, just not the specific transaction I'd point to in hindsight...

For a guy who wanted out, they did very well.
6 more years of 10.5 mil for a 55 pt one way winger, and despite Wolf's best efforts to drag them into the mix, looking like they'll miss the playoffs in the three consecutive years since the trade, ya, I'd say that hasn't gone as planned.

We just saw it happen. The Florida Panthers were coming off a Presidents trophy, were on the cusp, and traded their top line 115 point LWer and #2 defenseman for Matthew Tkachuk.

To be fair, Treliving said at the time that no other offers were even close.

So there might be an element of luck there where Florida wanted to do a major shakeup and it worked out. I do think you could find a team in this type of situation like NYR for example but there are plenty of years where Treliving might have never received such an offer.

He was wrong on a previous Brady rumour.

Flames could've retained on Weegar and Huberdeau and flopped them for more assets.

Wolf is a dope young goalie, but flames really need a proper rebuild.
This was a big part of the argument for me. If they had wanted, they could have flipped those 2 and ended up with a haul of assets overall. Dorion would be proud of 7 or 8 assets for one player lol.

The value they got for Tkachuk was very high. They could still get a good return for Weegar if both parties wanted a divorce, but Huberdeau collapsing really killed the value.
