its crazy how much excuses we give this core. its the owner, it's the fans, it's the coach, its the goalies, its the babies.

his effort on the 3rd goal down 2-1 with 10 minutes left in the 3rd was inexcusable for any player in the league let alone the captain of an nhl team. baby or not.
It's all of it. Those factors are part of what led them here and are still true. The poor ownership/management is largely why they're so starved for assets to try to improve the team and are stuck in the mud with little ability to pivot. But they aren't excuses at this point. The players have been a disappointment, but everyone still carries this shit. Melnyk, Dorion, DJ AND the Players. Green/SS and their 1 kick at the can are largely irrelevant.

naw the roster is good.

they have had at least a competitive roster for a couple of years now. they all got paid like it too.

the assets issue is more of a future issue.

Alfredsson, Karlsson, Spezza had excuses too, they still made shit happen.

I’ve never seen Karlsson play as heartless on the Sens as this new core is playing right now.

minus Stutzle, he is the new Alfredsson/Karlsson. single-handedly trying to will the team to wins.

Karlsson had the green light to do whatever he needed to do to get us scoring chances, because he was capable of beating teams by himself. Don't know if anyone on this team has that same freedom where they are left to do whatever they want out there.

Besides, comparing anyone to Karlsson is unfair, he was a McDavid level talent for Ottawa. Nobody is going to live up to that.

It doesn't matter if the roster is "good". These players learned how to lose under losers and that's why they know no different. It all led to this point. It's a cumulative thing. Alfredsson and Spezza were far more properly supported and especially properly coached during their tenures. Karlsson's teams have basically done nothing but lose either, the run was fun.

How about the back check in OT right before he scored versus Boston, totally quit on the play, if you want insight into his mentality about 2 way play these two plays reveal it all.

He selectively back checks and his instinct is to cheat

thats the thing though, even with all that talent he still tried to win the games with more effort than Chabot, Brady, Norris, Batherson. They don't have the talent AND aren't as competitive/ try as hard. not to mention the massive difference in consistency and mentality.

I loved the guy, but there were tons of times Karlsson mailed it in. Like Hoffman, he was at his worst when the team was out of it, but very effective and focused when they were in it.

I don't really expect them to be as competitive as Karlsson, that's part of what made him so good. It's extremely rare for a single player to give his team a chance to win every night like Karlsson did. There are maybe 2 or 3 guys in the league right now that can do that (McDavid and MacKinnon for sure, and then I'm not sure after that).

all he learnt from that was that he got rewarded for it so obviously it's working.

lets be real though, a huge reason for Brady's "best" season is that he spent the season cherry picking for breakaways. he cares that he scores more than he cares that the team wins.

do you not remember the pesky sens? that team probably had more comeback wins in a month than this team will put together in a season.

and Karlsson became selective after his injuries, before you couldn't get him to stop skating. not to mention he actually played intense 25 minutes a night for multiple seasons before he came to that point where he was selective.

The problem I have is the bad habits he has started well before he had a kid. He's always cheated in the d zone. He's always lacked a commitment to team defense. He's always seemed to take night's off at the wrong time.

He's the best example of a team following its leader. Brady tends to show up late in the 3rd trying to come back from a deficit.. The difference in his skating stride and effort level is very apparent when they're down by 1 (but not 2+) and the team is trying to erase a deficit for a big comeback.

It's not a coaching problem it's a Brady problem. And this team will go where he goes.

He was great, no doubt about it. I watched every single one of those games, some more than once. Like I said, I loved the guy, and I don't blame him for it because those were shit budget teams off the back of a half assed rebuild, but it still stands that most of his seasons in this league have been losing ones, so I struggle with the idea of holding him up as this godly standard of winning. If this team now went on a conference finals run, they'd basically accomplish what those Karlsson Sens teams did.

He’s getting paid $8M and is a captain of an NHL team and you’re bringing up a baby he had during training camp? Stop this the excuses, he needs to be better period.
I am not completely excusing anything.

If you don't think having a new born isn't a massive thing to deal with, then I don't know what to tell you. Pro athletes aren't robots. Even with a nanny, family help, etc...it is an extremely emotion and physical draining time.

You don't have to agree and I don't want to make an assumption, but I assume you haven't had a kid?

Going to back to my earlier comment in TC. I simply said that nobody should be surprised if Brady starts off slow. He hasn't really, but his play needs to be better.

Those teams were basically lotto teams without Karlsson and they still gave us A LOT of good, emotional, competitive hockey we could easily get invested in.

How much emotional, competitive, investible Senators hockey have you watched in the last 7 years? In that 26 game Hamburglar run alone they played more meaningful games than this core has played in their ENTIRE career.

+ Hockey is a lot more than winning the cup tbh. There are 82 games of a season, that's countless hours we watch to get entertained and see competitive, tense, beautiful, joyful hockey filled with drama. Multiply that by multiple seasons that's a lot of hours of being proud to be a fan even without a cup.

I won't argue they were better, more exciting teams. They were. Moments of excitement existed that have not been there during this last 7 years of misery and I look at that group more fondly. They didn't accomplish much of consequence either though and I consider that era a failure just as this one is one too. I mostly blame ownership/management for those teams not accomplishing more though, whereas with the current group I blame them all. My initial point was just that it's not like they're all a bunch of simp losers and we happened to end up with them all as one group. Even if this current group is a big bunch of losers, it's not because they drafted a whole group of losers, they drafted and developed them in to that. That doesn't absolve the players, they should look in the mirror too, but we're talking about one of the most mismanaged franchises in modern history. It was chaos with a dying lunatic running the show.

While the season isn’t technically over, the signs are there that I think it’s time to move on from Brady…he’s not captain material. He’s a good player but I just don’t think it’s working out, and I’m sure he’d be open to a change as well.

shipping him and chabot out if they miss the playoffs again would be a significant enough change/jolt to the core IMO. Sanderson and Stutzle are the future

someone mentioned that the year the Senators won the presidents trophy they were facing bankruptcy and weren't sure they were gonna get paid. so yea.

and those Karlsson years feel like cup winning years compared to this tbh.

the rub is that those teams weren't better, in those years we wished for a team like we have now. fully capped out with multiple young top 5 talents.

the big difference is that those teams had 100x more heart.

I don't think that's the same as having inept management and coaching. Or a dying insane man as owner. Even now, a big reason SS and Co. have difficulty doing much is because of the position Dorion put them in and I will die on that hill.

They were fun in more moments, but mostly those teams sucked and left me feeling more wanting because they could have been much better had they been properly supported.

I'm not arguing where they are now. I'm arguing how they got there. They didn't draft a whole group of losers, they developed them there, just the same as those players now are not able to look in the mirror and do what it takes. It's a cause and effect. And also, maybe the talent flat out isn't as high as some think and it's not just being "losers".

It's a tough blow for a fanbase who has missed the playoffs from 7 years, but trust me when I say that the team would not have moved in from Brady if they did not have good reason. An unnamed NHL executive hinted to me that maybe they felt Brady was too emotional at times and bringing in a steady locker room presence like Brett Howden as a key piece in the trade with Vegas will go a long way to helping this young Senators team get back to respectability. Now do they expect Howden to replace Brady's output on the ice? No. But you have to remember he isn't the only piece coming back for the Senators. They also got Zack Whitecloud who Steve Staios hopes could make moving on from Travis Harmonic in 2 years after Hamonic's 2.5M per extension expires much easier. Even if you don't agree that trading Brady was the right move for the team, you have to give Staios his due. When Staios went to Mr. Melnyk and brought him this 2 for 1 deal Mr Melnyck insisted they needed a youth component. So Staios pushed for a 1st round pick and turned the screws to Vegas who had to include one. If Vegas wins the cup this year, the Senators will get their 2027 1st, if not it's a 3rd at the upcoming draft.

Coaching. For sure ;)

I agree it is more than winning Cups as well.

I have had a partial season seat package since they came back to Ottawa and it is painful to go and watch them most of the time. My son doesn't care to go much anymore, I feel like I am wasting money, but I still want to support the team.

They don't need to win all the time, they just need to play like they care as much as I do. Sadly, too many nights over the last few years, it feels like they don't even care to play.

They drafted a bunch of player who turned the locker room into a college frat house none bigger than the captain.

Sure we can blame lack of leadership and all that but at the end sports is entirely about self accountability. No one tells Jordan, Alfredsson, Crosby, Karlsson, MacKinnon to care about winning. To motivate them to want to win. To hate losing so much that they will do anything to avoid it.

Do you want to win or not? It's simple. They got paid 8 mill and still decided they don't want to do the things to win. Exemplified best by none other than the captain.

Agree to disagree I guess. You try to make it too simple. I'm not excusing the players, but there's no part of me that doesn't believe they were also led here. If they turned it into a "frat house" as you say, where was the organizational leadership to not allow that to happen? I've never seen a sports organization in as poor of a state as the tear-down/rebuild Senators. All those greats listed largely had to do a lot of losing before they learned how to win too. Jordan basically lost as long as Brady has before he won. Alfredsson looked dead in the water against the Leafs for 4 painful losses of getting owned with the rest of the team. Karlsson had a ton of ups and downs, but team wise, mostly downs. Mackinnon's Avs were a mess for years. Crosby even had some painful losses, but is also the most truly generational talent in that list and played with 2 other sure fire hall of famers.

And quite frankly, they're all in this together. Sanderson and Stu have had their fair share of struggles and imo right now Sanderson being looked at to lead the offensive charge from the backend is the biggest singular issue outside of goaltending. I don't look at Brady struggling any less than Sanderson or others struggling simply because he has the C. Even Giroux, the effort is there, but he has had some god awful team killing decisions lately, like the hand pass on the faceoff brain cramp.
