Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

You know who's doing a great job?

Bill Zito that's who. His team made the finals three years in a row. Now only one win away from capturing their second cup in as many years.

That's what a great job for an NHL GM looks like.

Treliving is just treading water. He's now reached a stage where it's time to sink or swim. It really is cup or bust at this point.

He's got his work cut out for him.

As constructed this team isn't good enough. They lack a true #1 offensive defenseman to drive play. And have a bunch of forwards who couldn't score during the playoffs if they were in a room full of strippers with a briefcase full of $100 bills.

Kinda like me in high school.

But I thought their success was totally because of being in a tax exemption state?

I think that's a lame loser mentality excuse too.

If taxes are why they're so good now then why were they so bad for so long. In fact there's a whole host of teams in tax free states that have sucked for extended periods of time. Along with a bunch in taxed states that have had extended periods of success.

And then there's the Leafs....

Zito became the Panthers' GM in the summer of 2020. First season they lost in the first round. Second season they won the division and lost in the second round.

Tre became the Leafs' GM in the summer of 2023. First season they lost in the first round. Second season they won the division and lost in the second round.

Massive difference.

Team changed radically when they got Tkachuk .. that was his bright shining moment .. need a leader who can change a game in different ways .. a big hit, a forecheck, a beauty pass, a fight or a slick goal .. da leader needs to be able to do it all and inspire team-mates .. Matty, Mitch, Willy and JT are just not that type .. none are vocal and none have a complete game .. and clearly they have no synergy between them

The goal remains the same. A cup. Until that's been achieved, ultimately it's a failure.

----------------------------

Now that being said, we are still a top 3 team in the regular season, over the last nine years... which is pretty good.

But I thought their success was totally because of being in a tax exemption state?

It helps... also being $10 million over the cap helps.

But Florida is actually a model the Leafs can follow to an extent since they have no assets.

Florida went dumpster diving on a lot of players and took advantage of players having down years.

Frosling, Tkachuk, Bennett, and Jones were all bought low, and that is a large chunk of their core.

Yup. Trading Huberdeau out for Tkachuk did a lot for changing the complexion of that team.

Move out a soft, slower skating, playmaking first winger who struggled in playoff hockey and replacing him with a player like Tkachuk is always the smart thing to do if you want to succeed in playoff hockey.

That one trade turned Florida from pretender to contender.

so tired of hearing about Zito. The last gm to be glazed like this was Steve Yzerman. Check his time in Detroit to see how much of this is luck.

It's because of taxes, not luck.
Prior to the cap plenty of teams couldn’t build a winner, a financial advantage doesn’t automatically translate into success and no team makes this point more than the Leafs. Zito is a genius ignoring his contributions is more than idiocy……..

there is a post in here made sometime during the break between games 2 and 3 of the Florida series that argues that the idea of a puck moving dmen is 'gaslighting' because all dmen in the NHL can move the puck. I wish I could find it

And what made it so crazy was originally when that trade happened, almost every hockey pundit and hockey fan in the world thought Florida got bent over in that trade, especially after the year Huberdeau had the previous season.

I'm not here to say he's doing a great job, but I do think he deserves some credit for what he's done so far and this team isn't as wildly far away as many want to say.

  • Only team to bring them to seven games.
  • Held Florida to their lowest GPG in the playoffs.
  • Held Florida to the second lowest goal differential (Tampa was lowest in a five game series)
  • Scored more per game than all but Edmonton.
  • Allowed less goals in seven games than Edmonton did in six.
Sure, we still lost and that blows and we need to find a way to make that be different next time... and, we played the back-to-back Champs tougher than any team they faced and might have been Stolarz not getting head hunted from beating them. It's hard to win in this league and Florida is the bar (and it's not close), Treliving deserves some credit for what his part in that (and so does Shanahan, for that matter). This team is far better than we've been hearing the last six weeks.

The NHL should extend the salary cap limitations into the playoff rosters forcing teams to ice a cap compliant team in every playoff game.

Without question.

In the mean time, playoff teams not taking advantage of it are silly (Leafs the last 2 years at least).

Instead our loser group plays Matthews "injured all year", but his "injury" apparently wont benefit from rehab.

Marner for nothing.
Shanahan / Dubas disaster.
