Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

I don't think it will make any difference at all.

The hurdle to trading either of those guys would not be the dollars owed, the hurdle would be the size of the cap hit, and that isn't effected at all after the Leafs pay the singing bonus.

It's bizarre that they are structuring deals in this manner for bottom size dime-a-dozen players. Seems like an idiotic choice to structure their deals this way.
I could vaguely understand giving it to a UFA like Jarnkrok.

But in what world does David Kampf need signing bonuses & trade protection as your 4C??

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, as the Stanley Cup Final intensifies and Brad Marchand continues to wow at his age, the NHL rumor mill is heating up with several teams eyeing the veteran winger.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly interested in the player. Marchand is not the only player drawing attention, as other notable names, such as Sam Bennett, Jason Robertson, and Alex Tuch, are generating buzz.

Specifically a 4C not doing his job so much that you trade a 1st+ to sit him for another 4C.
I get your point, but in terms of usage, it was actually Domi that ended up being the 4C during the playoffs, not Laughton.

So, that's $3.75m x 4 years at 4C, so that you can send $2.4m x 3 years (+ M-NTC) to the press box.

....it's not great roster construction by treliving, whatever bloody way you look at it.

As they should be.

I wouldn't normally be the one saying give a 37 year old a 4 year 32 million dollar contract with any clause necessary to get it done.

But their are exceptions and Brad Marchand is an exception.

If he's willing to come here you do whatever you need to do to get it done

This team is getting old very quickly... Treliving is signing names more than anything else.

He has the attitude of just get it done no matter what, and it is leading to a very old team with a bunch of players past their prime signed for too long.

Have you watched Brad Marchand play? He's not just a name

With 95% of 37+ year olds you'd be right.

Not Brad Marchand

You want to sign him to a 4 year contract for 8 million per year.

That is insane.

I don't care about the last 2 years of that because by year 3 the cap is 113 million, by year It's 120.

If you get 2 effective years out of him, who cares about the last 2 when the cap is 120 million

You're correct he is no ordinary hockey player, but among the best of all time come playoffs.

Brad Marchand with his performance this playoffs has jumped to #28 overall in all time playoff scorers.

He is currently 4 points out of the 25 all-time placing him among legends like Bossy and Gordie Howe in his sights.

Wow, his PPG is almost as good as Marner's.

That’s pretty much what he did with Styles, I’ll never understand the logic of “we don’t want this player, and no one else wants him either so let’s overpay him” it’s mind boggling……..
Occams razor here is that before committing an NMC protected 90M contract, along with Brad's brand of working the phones and always up for exploratory discussions, simply did a touch of due diligence.

You're taking a pretty extreme view here. There were never even any players or teams attached to the story.

Hard to imagine there is any realistic news breaking these days from Marchy or Bennett as they work through...the Stanley cup finals. But hopefully one of them is available to us after the dust has settled.

Not many seriously competitive players want to come here for peanuts. This core has a bad reputation now

Kinda sounds weird to say it but I think you almost want Brad Marchand here for a longer 3-4 year duration. Let him be part of the culture change and rub off on the organization. You don’t think there’d be benefits to having an Easton Cowan grow up under his veteran tutelage, have a Knies receive some mentorship? Reprogram Matthews and Nylander a little bit even?

Put it another way. If a guy like Max Pacioretty can look like a heart and soul guy against the back drop of this core group, what would adding Marchand be like?

If it doesn’t work out I’m sure the resale value on him would be just fine.

Assuming Marner is gone, it would be a worthwhile use of Leafs cash to try and grab at least 2 of the 3 of Bennett, Marchand, Ekblad to directly downgrade the Panthers and bring some parity to the Atlantic.

Um, you know they haven't actually signed anyone right?

Their agents worked through……the combine. Every agent talks to Toronto to help drive up the price.

I’d take Marchand, but I’d really like for them to find a 25 yo version, if they make them anymore, and have him grow with Cowan and Knies. Then find the D and hope Woll keeps getting better. They have two big resources available to make it happen, but the GM is hanging on to his job by a string and is just hoping to get into the playoffs and win round.
