Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Four total goals in the last four games of the series. No scoring depth.
Saying the forward group is a disaster is a stretch but it certainly needs an overhaul.
And with almost 30 million in cap space It's going to get one.
Four total goals in game 4-7 against Florida this year. 6 total goals in games 4-7 against Boston in last years playoffs. That’s a total of 10 goals scored in 8 crucial playoff games 4-7 over the last two seasons. That’s an anemic offense from such a highly paid core forward group and also shows really poor forward depth. To me that’s a disaster and these stats are way more telling about how their forwards fail at the most crucial times than 100 point, 60 goal regular seasons show how good they are.

Do they have $30 million to spend?

They have about $25 million with 3-4 spots to fill and they need to re-sign Knies.

So let's call it $20 million with 3-4 spots to fill (depends if Reaves is playing), and two of those spots are expensive, 1RW and 2C.

I don't think they have a lot of cap flexibility just because of the spots that need to be filled.

Also, this is assuming no upgrades to the current roster.
OR instead of 1rw you find a 2rw which is way cheaper to go with the 2c nylander is a 1rw our problem was thinking we can afford 2 1c and 2 1rw and have a balanced team that could win

I think ownership knows they’ve wasted years hoping the core would come through and that’s why Shanny was let go. The next question was is Treliving also responsible for the mess they’re in, with Marner walking for nothing and no first round picks for the next three drafts. And while MLSE was deciding on his and possibly Berube’s fate, Brad went back to Calgary for a few days and Pelley had dinner with Berube to suss him out. Now that the dust has settled, it was decided that Treliving was limited in his autonomy to make significant changes by Shanahan and they believe Berube’s style of play can help them contend for a cup. The problem is they’re not well set up for it because they wasted precious resources and opportunities (draft picks and moving players before NMC’s kicked in) while believing that the core group could get it done. I believe that Treliving knows what needs to be done but I don’t see how they can change the DNA of this team overnight. Sure, their goaltending and defense with a tweak or two are probably good enough but their forward group is a disaster. I think it will take at least two seasons moving players out, buyouts, forcing trades if possible and using their resources to sign the right UFAS to do what they should have done after losing to the Habs four years ago. Build a deeper, tougher, mentally stronger TEAM that doesn’t just rely on four players to score in big games and I think they will give Tre and Berube two seasons to get it done.
Going back to that Easter Sunday afternoon prime time game 6 at home against Boston this core didn't handle it well and we hoped it was just like sever’s in a kid, but they proven over and over that wasn’t the case. Treliving has two months to find the right mix that can lead this team into contention, and that doesn’t seem possible with the resources he has available.

We have a 1RW in William Nylander

We have a 1LW in Knies

Then we have a current 2LW that is ideally a 3LW in McMann

And a 2RW that is ideally a 3RW in Domi.

Personally I am more concerned with the LW because we know that Domi and Matthews can play together.

So you can get by until the deadline with Nylander and Domi as your top 6 RW.

Especially if you can bring in a Marchment, or Marchand or even a Krider to a lesser extent

Because then you can bump McMann to LW3.

And then yeah you have a weaker RW.

But you got a stronger LW then last season.

You got a stronger defense to start next season then you did last season because you got Carlo from the start.

Your goaltending is set, At least for the regular season, I don't trust Woll in the playoffs after game 3 but for the regular season It's solid.

And I think we all assume JT is staying So your center position won't be any worse.

You probably can't fix the RW, not right now, unless they can land Boesser.

But you can fix the LW, and if they fix the LW the rest of the forward group falls into place.

Oh and one more thing.

That 25.7 million or whatever puck Pedia has for cap space that includes Reaves.

I'm not including Reaves because he's not making this roster.

So add Reaves 1.3 and now It's 27.

They need some major upgrades because that is an ugly top 6, and the 1RW is a liability defensively, so is Domi, so they need to find some better all situation players, or the top lines will need to be sheltered.

Krieder and Marchment suck, Marchand is old, but sure, maybe they work if they come here.

You got a stronger defense to start next season then you did last season because you got Carlo from the start.

Carlo was negative in the playoffs, hopefully, he rebounds.

But the D is the same as the playoffs, just older.

Regular season is not too important, I don't think they will miss.

Stolarz had just as big of a drop off in the playoffs.

Woll has a better track record of good play in the playoffs.

And I think we all assume JT is staying So your center position won't be any worse.

Just older and one of them will get a huge downgrade on the wing.

You probably can't fix the RW, not right now, unless they can land Boesser.

It's not even close to fixing the issue.

But you can fix the LW, and if they fix the LW the rest of the forward group falls into place.

I don't think LW is fixed, in any situation you laid out.

3rd line is still a 4th line with the players signed, they need to push a lot of people down.

You now have another spot to fill and he still counts a little against the cap, they will have about $1 million in dead cap after Patches/Benning/Reaves.

We can call it 27 if you'd like though.

So now they need to re-sign Knies, and then basically an entire 2nd line so it pushes everyone down.

27 million for that is not going too far.

And again, the UFAs this year, I think will be paid very well.

Hopefully, Treliving waits til the end of free agency for a few players, this way they can hopefully get some deals/projects.

I bet you he won’t be a liability if he was on that top line you guys kill me with this narrative matthews kills a lot of plays defensively himself that line will be top 5 in the league I seem to remember anytime keefe wanted to get matthews going he’d put him with nylander and they would dominate

I don't have a spot to fill because Ryan Reaves didn't have a spot for the majority of the season.

He's literally the 16th forward, and if he's not now he will be by July 5th if not sooner.

And that's assuming he's not involved in a trade or bought out, I don't think he's going to be bought out because he's only got 1 year left but regardless he's not on this team.

He had a month to trade Marner before the NMC kicked in, and Shanny likely prevented it from happening anyway. Why blame Tre?

and no first round picks for the next three drafts.

Did Tre trade them all?

And while MLSE was deciding on his and possibly Berube’s fate, Brad went back to Calgary for a few days

He didn't take a vacation, his daughter was graduating.

I believe that Treliving knows what needs to be done but I don’t see how they can change the DNA of this team overnight.

Doesn't have to happen overnight.

Next year's free agent crop is better, so do it over two years. Even with some players re-signing with their current teams it will still be a better group.

That's your problem, you think the DNA needs to change overnight, it doesn't, in fact I'd argue it started this time last year With Berube.

And it continued with OEL, Stolarz and Lorentz.

What do Berube, Stolarz, OEL and Lorentz have in common?

They have all won and from the moment the season started to the moment in ended you could see that things had changed, not enough because it ended how it did but the DNA change has begun.

The biggest sign of that? Game 6 VS Ottawa.

The cowardly Keefe Leafs blow that game and the series.

They didn't.

It's not enough because it ended how it ended but the DNA change has already begun and it will continue this summer.

Treliving’s goal for next season is to ice a team that can compete for a playoff spot. The challenge will be finding players that can help them win games or even a round.

Teams make changes every year, but he was quite specific when he said the DNA of last year’s team had to change if they want to be in a position to contend for the East. That is a daunting task so the reality is “Changing the DNA” is just a marketing slogan to change the narrative and to get people excited about the season.

They save almost nothing by buying Reaves out as well.

Think they just find a way to eat the final year of his deal.

Kampf and Jarnkrok deals are basically buy-out proof too, though in both cases, once the signing bonuses are paid (!?!?!?!?!), the actual cash on those deals is very low, which should make them pretty easy to move.

They save 900K on a Reaves buy out.

Unless this team is gutted by injury this is already a playoff team.

The goal is the same as every year Matthews is on the team.

Win.
