Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Best retool would be let Marner walk, trade Reilly and resign JT on a discount. Dollars saved on those 3 deals alone will allow you to bring in 3 above average pieces if they choose to do so. Add the trading of Kampf and Jarnkrok there is more room.

Definitely will have the ability to change the team if they choose to. Or you wait it out and see what McDavid does. If he doesnt resign in Edmonton and wants to test free agency the following season, do you tinker on the team this season to go all out next off season where free agents are a plenty?

McDavid
Eichel
Panarin
Kaprizov
Jason Robertson
Makar
Connor
Necas
Zegras
Kempe
Garland
Tuch
R. Andersson
Marchment
By the time next off season rolls around a large chunk of that list will already have re-signed with their teams.

Not necessarily, if they watch a player like Marner get above what he is worth which he will. Agents will convince their players to play out their final years. Its a domino effect. A player like Rantanen will kick himself after seeing what Marner gets paid. You watch.

I guess this could be the first time, it's never happened before.

I would trim Panarin and Zegras off the list. I would hope they wouldn’t even have conversations with them.

means big names moving more frequently via free agency and free agency period being a lot more interesting then it has been the last 15 years
Maybe but I'd be surprised. Hockey players for the most part are fiercely loyal to their teammates and long term contracts are still the preference for most.

I agree but I do think with more American players coming into the league and more NBA and soccer domination on social media you'll see younger players begin getting more "move-happy" I guess and pushing themselves to certain teams.

Out of this list, based on what the team currently has, Makar, Kempe, Tuch and Marchment are the guys I would target. If McDavid wants to come to Toronto the team won't have to target him he'll come knocking.

I think that they should do some adjustments including trading one or more of the core four, but blowing up the team would be a mistake because going 7 games with Florida while they've killed everyone else in the playoffs shows that the Leafs are one of the top 4 or 5 in the league.

Their Core 5/4/ 3 Rielly, Matthews, Nylander all have NMC's.

Knies has to be re-signed, and will take the majority of Tavares money.
Then they have some bottom 6 players to sign.

So they will have about $15-$18mm to land a 1st. liner and a 2nd. liner?

There's bugger-all in centers available.

There is Brock Nelson

CJ said on his podcast today that it's unlikely Rielly gets moved.

I like that, I don't think the defense needs to be touched
I don't hate it, but it also tells me that they're likely going to get Mitch's replacements in free agency and not trades. Unless we can pull that Robertson+ for Marchment move everyone is talking about.
