Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Well based on what was said at the press conference it's officially Brad's team.

And by that I mean the people above him are going to be hands off which we know Shanny wasn't.

If Pelley is telling the truth and he's not going to get involved unless asked then starting today it's on Treliving now.

Alright Brad let's see if you can continue to prove me right.

wow interesting

am working so didnt get a chance to see the presser. any other interesting tid-bit that was mentioned?

Absolute bruh moment on the Laughton trade. Just bust out the bruh soundboard. A 1st round pick and a near NHL ready prospect. How much of an upgrade was he on whatever Kampf would've performed? Stats wise it can't have been much better. Same price that was paid for Marchand

feel like we could've used the 40 pt Laughton for which that package would've been fair. wish we had traded it for some under the radar type player that could be a long term contributor like Dylan cozens

Well if a condition of employment is "X" and you want to gain employment...you agree to "X"

There are only 32 GM jobs available in the league and likely none are as lucrative as Toronto so I guess at the end of the day he agreed to those conditions that Shanahan put forth.
I agree. I doubt very much that Shanny hired him and then said "BTW, the core stays" ...Tre knew what he was getting into with the handcuffs.

The question then is, how much autonomy does Brad have?

It's fair to assume that if he wants to move on from Marner (or sign him), or bring in any high-level player he'll be talking with Pelley first.

But will MLSE essentially leave the business of building this team in Treliving's hands? If so, I'd really love to know what his honest, no-BS assessment of this group is, especially the Four Ghosts that take up half the cap space.

In any case, we'll likely get our answer at least to some degree on all these questions once he gets to work here.

If you watched the press Pelle said he'd be a sounding board and that's it.

So if that's true theb this is about to truly become Brad's team.

Yep but because Marners outrageous contract..we couldnt afford 7 million per year. And we needed a top 4 rh Dman that we could afford....Carlo from a rival east team was all that was available. For years his contract has made us deplete our assets... paying big assets for retention or to dump contracts.

Matthews LTIR, Marner/Tavares gone in summer

The two firsts with Marner pending was really stupid. On one hand you might not be a playoff team if he leaves and Matthews/Nylander gets injured and also you blew all your assets on one run. The next two runs have no assets. By 2028 we’ll actually need a first rounder. Putting value aside, which was pretty weak on the Laughton deal, this was awful asset management IMO. Also lost Greb and Minten along the way. Just very very careless and it failed. I think the chances of success were very low to begin with anyways.

Can we stop talking about Grebs and Minten like they were or are blue chip prospects because they weren't and they aren't.

I know we all loved "Backcheck Forcheck, Paycheck."

But let's be serious one guy tops out as a 4th line winger.

The other tops out as a 4th line, MAYBE 3rd line center.

Brother I'll never stop. I'm potentially mad at Lou for giving away Carter Verhague to the islanders who gave him to Tampa who gave him to Florida. Or what about Dakota Joshua or what about Marchment or Connor Brown or Trevor Moore or Hyman or Kadri or....Bunting? Imagine how good of a 3rd line we'd have if we didn't overpay 4 guys and rielly.

I'm being silly but also...

I can appreciate that he battled hard in the playoffs and tried making things happen but at the end of the day he was about a standard 4th liner.

Massive failure of a trade.

Now that the Shanahan shackles are off, Treliving will have more freedom to build his team.
I’m not so sure that’s a good thing.

I think they should keep Matthews and Nylander for at least one more year so there’s not much to do this summer other than freeing up cap space, maybe looking at adding 1 UFA, and moving anyone below Knies that will waive their move clause.

In the meantime, I’d be looking for a GM that could give them the best shot at McDavid, should he become available, and if he doesn’t, then someone that can get the best haul for Matthews and Nylander over the next couple of years.

They need both of those positions and it would have been nice to let them play and grow into their role.

But, to be fair, Berube and Tre could not have imagined just how bad the core is, despite being warned.
Now that they know the situation they’re not allowed anymore mistakes.

You can find a 4th line winger or a 3C

It's the guys like Knies and Cowan you don't want to trade because those Guys have top 6 potential, and in Knies case he's turning into a star.

But guys like Minten and Grebs you can find those.

Maybe, but they haven’t. The good thing is everyone, other Kampf and Domi, come off the books after next season.

Ironically while we were spinning our wheels never able to get by Boston (and many other teams), Tre was helping to build the Panthers who we can’t get by now. Who will be the next team to rise while we run it back hoping for a 10th, 11th, 12th time is the charm.

When I look at the team and the potential players that need to go. Here are my final thoughts:

Matthews -(Stay)

He passed the eye test for me. Obviously hurt this year. Franchise centre and a no trade. I personally and have always believed that pairing MnM together was always a mistake. Matthews needs to play with heavier players. Aside from puck luck and maybe 2/3 plays. I thought Matthews was decent this playoff. I hope he heals up. It’s also a trade you are unlikely to win.

Marner -(Let walk)

From the TO area, but can’t handle the market. Too perimeter, needs time and space to be effective, and no signs of any physicality. Mentally fragile. Amazing regular season player who helps you get into the dance. NOT worth the ask and helps reset forward depth.

Nylander (Stay)

Can’t change everything. Not the time to visit Nylander. Great player, with plenty of warts.

JT (Sign)

I just don’t see how we get a 2C and 3C in this UFA class. I do hope management squeezes his head and wallet. I also believe that he CANNOT be your 2C on a cup team. I also hate Willy stuck on his line. He has to be a 3C or middle six LW. Target contract is realistically 5.5-6 million AAV.

Kampf (Trade)

Not a Chief player. Gotta go. Slide Laughton into 4C. Lack of physicality.

Jarnkrok (Trade/Release)

Brings little to nothing, need to churn the bottom of the roster. Again, lack of physicality.

Rielly (Convince to waive NMC -trade)

It’s time. I don’t think he has negative trade value, but the return will not be great. We need a proper puck moving PP QB. Prone to terrible pinches and positional play. Cap dollars are better spent elsewhere.

Lorentz/Holmberg (Re sign)

Bring back on reasonable deals

Robertson (RFA - Trade)

Too light in the pants. On his ass too much. Need more than just “he sure does try” Let him go and grab a pick.

I won’t at this time project replacements, but with the above changes this what the roster would look like.

Knies Matthews Domi
McMann 2C Nylander
3LW Tavares Cowan (I give him a shot)
Lorentz Laughton Holmberg

McCabe Tanev
OEL 2RD
Benoit Carlo
Myers

Targets:
2nd line Centre
Middle Pair RW or LW ( Could move Domi)
Middle pair RD.

As July 1 gets closer, I will share thoughts on potential targets.

Cowan should spend a year in the AHL.

I don’t know about others, but I never mentioned anything about them be blue chips. They could have fetched their own assets. I just think the Laughton deal was a steal for Philly. Greb was really not that much worse than what I saw from Laughton this year actually. If anything I’d have preferred to have Greb there for the playoffs personally.

I think Marchand only became a first once Florida advanced to the third round. So if the Leafs had acquired Marchand, instead of Laughton, and lost in the second round, it only would have been a 2nd round pick surrendered.

Or possibly when making trades, think about putting conditions like that on a deal.
