If he gives MM 13.8m it's over for him. May as well throw himself off a bridge. Knies and upcoming Leafs stars will look at the contracts and say want mine.

Tanev OEL Rielly will be old in short order and the music stops. Party over.

It's mad to think, all we needed was a couple of 'dinosaurs' to get this team playing a structured, solid style.

They will not compete in 2.5yrs from now and those that can and will shall look at 13.8m Mitch Marner and demand massive amounts. No money for depth at. That point.

Not to throw cold water on the positivity around here, though I do sometimes feel it's my duty, but please consider that the Leafs have played 13 of their 21 games at home, where they've been great, and are only 3-3-1 on the road, where they have some catching up to do.

And after a ridiculous light schedule the past two weeks they are playing almost basically every second night until Christmas break while dealing with multiple significant injuries to their already thin forward group.

If they make it to the break still sitting atop the Atlantic then we all should feel a lot more confident about where they are at.

I don't care if they have played 13 of their 21 games on the moon.

They are rolling right now.

Hayes threw out the hypothetical of trading for Crosby if all the stars aligned.

I'd put that at no more than 10% but even at 37 (or if he would welcome the trade) he would increase Leafs chances of winning a Cup. The guy is a tireless worker and winner.

I can't think of a trade scenario that works, the Pens aren't going to just eat millions and the Leafs aren't just going to part with salary-certainty young diamond prospects.

As it were, Leafs can surely find heavy forwards in the market place that are cheaper and cost less to acquire.

One thing that has become clear is the Leafs need to be shopping for 2 forwards.

They need a 3C but they also need a top 9 winger.

We can't be 1 Matthew Knies injury away from Pontus Holmberg in the top 6.

Pontus Holmberg can't be the #7 forward

We have a lot of bodies right now and it needs to be shaped and consolidated somewhat. The quantity of guys like Kampf, Holmberg, Jarnkrok could probably be cleaned up into one higher impact player, maybe a Marlie or two can step up and steal a job. That kind of thing.

Who cares? We see a bunch of 'maybe he's not needed....' takes now that the team is winning.
Win or lose we always get some bad takes.
Christ, the Marner thread is full of them.
I know, right? My favorite is the whole Marner standing up as a leader of men while Matthews is out narrative, holy smokes what a load of crap. In April there must have been 100 posts here saying how with Matthews out, we need Marner to step up and lead the way against Boston, we all know how that turned out. I don't know if people have already forgotten how useless he was in the playoffs or if they think playing Utah in November is the same as playing a playoff team in April but either way, that thread has become a disaster.

Anyhow, November Marner has always been fantastic and Tre's off-season is looking pretty good so far. The big question is - does he have the brains/balls/patience to wait until the playoffs are done to make a decision on Marner (as many knowledgeable hocky people have suggested), or will he bend over like Dubas did and award him a ridiculous contract before he Marner shows he can get it done in the playoffs? I like what he's done so far but make the wrong decision on Marner, and he loses all the points I've given him so far. Be strong Tre!

People dream about that kind of trade every year. Package up a bunch of spare parts that we don't want or need any more, and hope someone gives us a valuable player in exchange. It's never happened before so I don't see why it would happen now.

Don't worry they did. The short memories around here never cease to amaze me.

What? You mean we can't get Krieder for Robertson, Holmberg, Jarnkrok and Kampf? What if we throw in Steeves?

I more enjoy the Marner is carrying the team narrative. It’s like their D and goaltending are not even on the ice.

He is currently T-11 in scoring, which is where he should be based on his cap hit.

No one thinks that. Not one player carries a Team, just like not one player is at fault for failure.

I don’t think we would be able to package the garbage into one big fish, but probably a couple of Liljegren type deals and try to bundle up picks and something decent for a return.

One quote I've been thinking about that Tre has said on many occasions is "I'm a big believer you build your team in the summer." Looking at how he's assembled our Defence Corps and I can't imagine the Leafs going out to acquire a D-man at the trade deadline like in years past. They've got talent, defensive acumen, and size back there. Maybe we see a trade akin to Schenn for a 3rd like in 2023 but even then it might not be necessary.

I think he'll be an active buyer, but it'll be adding a top 9 forward or two instead of D men

Which makes sense if you want to build chemistry. He already has the depth on D, the only need I see is to add a C and maybe a bottom 6 winger

Yes, up front he'll make a deal. I imagine it'll be a move similar to Vegas getting Barbashev at the 2023 deadline. Not like a massive overhaul like we saw in 2021 and 2023 for the Leafs.
Agreed, and they don't need anything close to the overhaul that happened in 2023. They likely need another depth defenseman and a third line centre, and that's pretty much it. The roster is otherwise basically set.
