Why wouldn’t we wed still have Kadri and a better team cause the cap gets spreaded better we don’t lose Hyman etc

I don't think we'd still have Kadri, because he still suffers the back to back playoff suspensions which is why he got traded.

The suspensions don't change, therefore the trade still happens.

Look there is A LOT of things you could be critical of Dubas for, I could and have gone over them before.

Signing Tavares is not one of them.

If you have a 27 year old legitimate #1 center that wants to play for your team you sign that contract.

ANYBODY would have signed that contract I don't care if you got Matthews and Kadri or not.

ANYBODY would have signed that contract you can say you wouldn't have but I know that's not true, and you know that's not true.

Besides if he wasn't here where would we be now? certainly not 1st place in the Atlantic.

Dubas doesn't get credit for very much, overall he's a bad GM.

But he does get credit for a couple things and that's one of them.
I have nothing against JT, but a lot against the signing.

We had Matthews going to be our 1C, we had Kadri and Bozak and Nylander all capable of being a 2C. We did not need a 2C enough that we made him not only the highest paid 2C ever (and by a lot!), but one of the very highest paid players period.

"If he wasn't here where would we be now?" Who knows. But imagine what might have been the team if we had his $11M, plus the overpayments to Matthews and Marner and to a lesser extent Nylander available. What might have been done with possibly $20M more each of the last 6 years?

We did not need the most expensive 2C ever when we already had quality 2C and had up-and-coming Matthews, Marner and Nylander, but desperately needed defence and goaltending.

And, no, much as I like JT I would not have signed him, as I said at the time and repeatedly even since.

I don't really think it's age related.

I think the Tavares signing and to a lesser extent the Marner overpay really divided a lot of the posters into "Dubas is a genius" and "Dubas is an idiot" groups. The ones who thought those were great moves had to keep trying to laud his every move since, despite the evidence.

If you can't show that your idea is better, try to denigrate the other.

To be clear, I don't think I fall into either camp. I think JT was unnecessary and the Marner contract (in particular) was mishandled (he said so himself), but he did make a number of good moves. I do think that the evidence shows that Tre has done better (pending the upcoming JT and Mitch resolutions, and playoff results).
I think it was simply Kyle was an extreme hire, which brings out extreme views and camps. Some were excited about a potential hockey savant a la Billy Beane, and others were flabbergasted at the timing of chasing magic beans - right from the get go.

He did turn out to be extremely bad though, so it really just was what it looked like.

HOLY SHIT Its Happening

I don't know that I trust Doug Maclean as a source.

Plus just to make the money work Calgary would need to retain 50% and he's got 5 years left.

And then Kampf and Reaves would need to be involved to match the money.

That's before we get to the actual return.

I'll never say never I've seen bad trades but that's HIGHLY unlikely

Calgary is a surprise this year. Currently a playoff team. Wouldn’t they want to keep Kadri for his experience?

I think it would be unwise to bring Kadri back. Just too much on the books for the cap. An older guy with a long term we don’t need.
This year and next year are the prime years to win. I think you do whatever you can to win in these next two seasons and worry about the rest of it later. The East is terrible. The Leafs will never get a better chance.

I still think it was a pretty sound decision at the time. We had Matty, an obvious budding star in a rabid market. Bring in a Legit 1b to lessen the load and expectations, and give the young star a bit more breathing room. I saw it as an investment in your new long term asset. Dollar amount was going rate, but high yes. IF Covid doesn't hit, the cap is likely 10-15 million higher by now and wouldn't be so bad, who knew at the time. Would 34 be as dominant a player if he was the only legit top end center in the media snakepit the past 5 years? Who knows, but you do everything in your power to let the new star succeed. You certainly can't argue with JT's numbers... he has been solid and consistent really.

The Leafs have two goaltenders absolutely rolling right now, and not knowing who to start on any given night due to the high quality of their play is a good problem to have. Yes, one guy has to sit, but it's all about healthy competition.

Mercifully, finally having REAL goaltending thanks to having a competent GM is make a real difference of future expectations,

If you believe in "Good teams are built from the Goalie out" & "Defense wins Championships" then you have to be loving the direction Treliving is taking the current Leafs. [Standing Ovation]

We thought we were getting an Eric Tulsky but we got a John Chayka instead...that's all she wrote..

28 points, 1st in the Atlantic 3 points up on Florida.

The teams is playing fantastic, sure I would like to see them score more, I think they should be better then a middle of the pack offense but I suspect that will improve as the team starts to get healthy.

Solid offense, solid defense, great goaltending from both guys.

I just hope they don't lose the game Matthews returns in because I don't want to hear 'See? he came back and we lost, we play better without him.'

I don't want to hear that.

Berube might have been Tre's best move so far. He's really getting the team to work better, and more defensively sound. Of course Stolarz has been excellent for us as well, and I really like how OEL has played, a big surprise how good he's been. Tanev has been good, quietly going about his thing, rarely making errors, and outside of blocked shots, not being very noticable. That's a good thing.

We've gone on good streaks before, and when we were struggling... I said let's be patient. I didn't like the lack of effort, and how we weren't showing up at times. Since the Matthews injury, we've really put in a good effort every game... I hope that when we become healthy, complacency doesn't sneak back in. A talented team, with a good worth ethic can go a long way. If one fails, the other rarely makes up for a lack of the other. The win streak has been great, but let's be patient, and see if this is lasting, and the effort can become consistent. It's a great positive direction though.

Who cares? We see a bunch of 'maybe he's not needed....' takes now that the team is winning.
Win or lose we always get some bad takes.
Christ, the Marner thread is full of them.

Nobody talks about how good Steven Lorentz has been but they should be he's been fantastic too, he's even got 3 goals which I was not expecting at all.

I was fully prepared for him to be that pure defensive forward, and he has been that defensive forward but he's also chipping in couple goals.

Fantastic signing
