Sounds like Shanahan and Treliving weren’t exactly on the same page as Keefe last season. This year with Berube everyone is marching to the beat of the same drum.

Thought this recent comment from Pelley was interesting. Encouraging to hear.

"I have no idea what happened over the last 10 years, (but) I know that culture, I know that chemistry is there (now). That (became clear) when I really observed (Leafs president) Brendan Shanahan and (GM) Brad Treliving, and I looked at the chemistry they had, and it was phenomenal. The chemistry wasn’t quite there with the previous head coach (Sheldon Keefe), so after the season we brought in Craig Berube to that triangle of chemistry.”
I wouldn't say encouraging. Call me cynical but this to me just looks like Pelley is in on the ShanaScam.

Lots of BS flowing here .. omg what a joker .. he should have said we will see what happens come playoff time with our core 4 guys and then make da necessary adjustments to team depending on their performance when it counts .. that is leadership and shows subscriber base/players he is serious about winning

On one hand not surprising,.on the other it makes the unnecessary multi year extension both men signed off on for Keefe look even sillier

It does look silly, if we get some playoff success and it's because of Berube...maybe it all worked out for the best.

It is pretty wild that Keefe couldn't get anything out of depth players or develop any young guys though.

Even a guy like Stefan Noesen came over in that whole Foligno transaction, we had no room for a player like him? I thought he looked good in the single game we had him in for.

He helped develop a number of young guys, and he got more out of our depth than Berube is. Noesen was 28 years old and fringe replacement level depth, and he wasn't that good in his one game with us. He didn't break out until 2 years later at age 30, after spending a year in the AHL. Ironically, the one getting the most out of him right now is... Keefe.

The Leafs have become a slog.

They've built a roster that isn't skilled enough, yet is also too slow. Just a brutal combination.

Was always going be major adjustments with a new coach coming in, but Berube has neutered them at even strength so far - they just don't score.

It's also massively concerning that they've only played 17 games, but they've delivered horrific no-show efforts in like 4 or 5 of them so far. Maybe more?

There's no recipe for success here.

They have had 2 truly bad game last night, and Columbus.

It's a weird comment for sure. Shanahan has had five coaches and four general managers. Triangle of chemistry, rofl.
5 gm's if you count the hunter/dubas alliance as a separate entity ... but i guess that is just splitting hairs lol

answer - the common denominator in this era of futility for $1000 Alex

question - who is the shanabang?

Yeah, that doesn't make me feel better, at all.

Shanahan is the architect of everything this team has done. So what this confirms to me is that Dubas was pushed out at least in part because he didn't want to go along with Shanny's vision any longer ("everything is on the table"). Brad was brought in because he agreed to continue it.

And considering Brad hasn't really done anything philosophy-wise that differs from Dubas - at least Dubas over his last few years here (continuing to strengthen the D, keep the core, the Matthews & Nylander deals and a recycling bin approach to the bottom 6 in particular), that seems to line up.

Short version: Don't expect anything to change under Brad, that's why he was brought in.

Brad is doing a decent job, but Tanenbaum is the shot caller GM in my eyes. Brad/Tanenbaum have realized they need a bigger d core, although they are old and the decline is coming every year. Ill judge Brad with what he does with Marner and Tavares and that 22 million. Sam Bennett as the 2c costs 7 or 8 million and Id let it be known they want him thru players or agents on the low, they need a dman too. Re-signing both Marner and Tavares and getting a 5-6 dman will confirm a blown opportunity over the last decade with that group.

My opinion has always been that Treliving, like almost any GM, has been given parameters around what he can do, and trading any of the star players is not within those parameters. It's why I believe there is no question that Marner and Tavares are being resigned.

Does any top 4 d win with this group:

Reilly 30yrs old 7.5 million
Tanev 34 yrs old, 4.5 million
OEL 33 yrs old, 3.5 million
Mccabe 31 yrs old, 4.5 million

Pay slots are not open to get a #1 dman . 20 million spent on the top 4 and they need to spend 8 plus million to get an upgrade on Reilly who is miscast and overpaid.

Yeah but no one ever signs or trades for #1 dmen anyway. Teams have to draft and develop them because once you have them you aren't giving them away.

Which means if the Leafs ever get a #1 dman again, it will be because they drafted and developed one. Which will also mean the guy spends his first 3 seasons on a cheap ELC.

I dont think Marner would waive at the deadline, if he asks for 8 million, I dont want that deal, I want some change. Marner will ask north of Nylanders 11.5, no thanks. I personally like Max Domi as the set up man for Matthews plus he adds some grit.

If Marner did waive, Leafs can get a 1st round pick most likely 22-32 range, a defensive prospect recently selected in the 1st round type on the cusp of the NHL or already in the lineup, and other lesser valued assets.

I actually sympathize with Keefe a bit, but I think he fell into a common trap of worrying about his job security so he leaned too much on core players and didn't want to deal with projects throughout the season

He's got to get Matthews signed we all know that but at this point there is not a single thing he's done that we can be heavily critical of.

Bertuzzi and Domi were great signings that give the Leafs a fantastic top 6 instead of a top 4 with 2 guys you hope work out.

Klingberg filled the need for a secondary puck mover.

Reaves is probably signed for a year to long but this team NEEDED a player like him.

Gambell and Jones are both players we know can provide NHL minutes when injury happens.

You got a former NHL assistant coach as your AHL Head Coach.

And a former NHL Head coach as one of your NHL assistant coach with the other assistant being a cup winning assistant coach.

When the worst thing I can say is that Ryan Reaves should have been given a 2 year contract instead of 3 I think that's pretty good.

Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

Domi should be playing with Matthews when he returns. He’s not good enough to play C, and playing him on the 3rd line is a waste. At least you may get some value out of that contract.

The one good thing I can say about him, is he is the first guy to stick up for his teammates
