Brad Treliving is doing a great job.

I agree with everything except that I think the previous GM was always in the "our window is now" mode, but just not doing it well. Trading away picks for short term (non) help created our "long term duscomfort".
Yeah, that's a fair point.

It will be interesting to see if we start training valuable assets under Tre. Are Cowan, Minten and Hildeby in play if we look like a team that could make noise in the playoffs?

You have to think its coming. Almost everyone has a NT so how do they get stronger? I like the goal and D changes but its not like the forwards can't be improved on a lot. Picks are thin and even though it almost never happens what about for a young player with a bit of term? They have spent so much for so little in the past that it gags me to think about continuing the drain but I can't see them standing pat at the TDL. I expect Berube will give Tre a shopping list and they will have maybe a Flyer or a Duck or both added.

Yeah, I wonder how much Minten might be in the plans for the second half. Him being a decent third line C with a couple of good wingers would solve a lot for us.

Yes, our F can improve, but we probably already have one of the best F cores in the league. I am not at all sold that Minten is the answer, but if he is...

Jarnkrok Matthews Domi
Pacioretty Tavares Nylander
Knies Minten Marner

Lorentz Kampf Dewar
Holmberg Reaves.

It's probably over the cap but we can juggle until the playoffs with IR I imagine.

But the Avs added speed and skill like Nichushkin and Lehkonen, they didn’t add Folignos to the team. Every one of their lines was fast, every D pair had a fast puck mover. We gave up after Barrie, the team got slower older and heavier every year under Dubas.

I really wish Dubas stuck to an Avs vision and kept adding speed throughout the lineup but that just doesn’t match reality even a little bit.

I’m just not seeing how adding Domi up front is a commitment to a less talented balanced team that wins 2-1 compared to the forward adds we made before Tre, Tanev and Lorentz are nice but they’re not changing the DNA of the team.

It’s not a criticism of Tre, he’s doing a better job for now than it looked like he was gonna do, but it’s probably good to be objective about the flaws of the previous teams instead of this weird fantasy that Dubas tried to build a fast skill team when 90% of his adds were slow and not skilled.
What Dubas wanted to do and what he did are completely different.
Like I said, Dubas wanted to build the Avs as thats his vision but he realised that our Alphas are all Betas. Thats why he added character and leadership to the group.
Our Core, as of today, will never be the Avs as they just don't have it in them to play like them. Makar is Reilly on massive roids, Mack is Willie 100% engaged plus a rocket on his back. Landy when healthy is JT with true grit and leadership. Rantanen is just a force. Now this can all change but until they do, Avs(few yrs ago) was a much better team than our boys had shown in the past 8 years.
90% of Dubas adds were slow and not skilled?
Soup-he is really fast and beside stone hands, he is pretty skill
Muzzin-not the fastest Dman but won't say he is slow.
TJ-same as Muzzin.
Ennis-he is quite fast and got some skills
Kerfoot-pretty fast with limited IQ
Vesey-he is pretty fast
Sandin-slow but skilled
Bogo-he is not slow
Laf-fast and he is good with his skill set
McCabe-not slow and got skills
ROR-not slow and got skills
Schenn-not slow and his skills are good
Foligno-slow and got skills
Jumbo-slow with great skills

I might had missed a few here and there but overall, I really won't say Dubas tried to assemble a team that is slow and not skilled

Tre added Bert and Domi to provide more balance scoring through the lineup. Ofcourse only Domi remained. Not saying Tre is this perfect GM as sofar he had done worst than Dubas as his Leafs only made the playoffs while Dubas made it to the 2nd round ONCE.

This isn’t a defense of Dubas at all, if anything people that supported his initial stated vision for the team of constant waves of overwhelming speed should be mad at him that he turned it into an idea that’s too ugly to try again for a decade without actually having committed to it at any time. Mikheyev and Barrie were the only notable adds that played fast. Bogo and Schenn might be ok skaters for bottom pairing crease clearers but they in no way make the team play faster than the opponent, we never got a Towes, Nuke, Lehkonen add. I’m not saying Dubas deliberately tried to build a slow grinder team but he didn’t add any additional speed to the lineup for the most part.

Got to disagree with you. Need to consider that when Dubas took over, AM, Hyman, Willie, MM, JT, Marleau, Kadri, AJ, Kap, Brown, Leivo, Engvall and Moore were breaking into the lineup. All these guys are already pretty fast and skill. The following year, the slowest 4 of the bunch were all traded away and replace by faster players in Kase, Kerfoot, Kampf, Soup, Engvall and Moore

Bunting a year after that. Gally in mid season. The only person who is slow is Richtie but he was supposed to be the PF like Knies and he traded him away for Lub mid season.
Dubas always add fast player unless that player offered a different set of skills like grit, physical... Even in the last TDL, he added Laf, who is really fast, McCabe is not Toews but he is not slow or not skilled. ROR is ROR and Schenn is Schenn.

Hopefully, the Leafs should do anything and everything to give themselves a better chance at a cup.

As much as I Ilike guys like Cowan, Minten and Hildeby, if there is a deal out there that makes this team better they all need to be on the table.

That's especially true for Hildeby because the Leafs have Stolarz and Woll playing well so it might be tough for Hildeby to break into the lineup.

Now I'm not suggesting trading Easton Cowan for Brock Nelson or Yanni Groude, or Taylor Hall, those are rentals and for me to put an Easton Cowan on the table it would have to be somebody with term.

Butt if that guy is out there absolutely you put Cowan, Minten, Hildeby etc. on the table

I say this statement is true some years and not others. I personally didn't think any of the teams under Dubas were ready or warranted the trading of 1st's and prospects. There was a lot of regular season success but it was incredibly clear, to me anyway, the style those teams played would not be successful come playoff time. No matter who you tried to install into the roster come trade deadline time, it was not going to solve the fundamental issues with the style of play.

But, in my opinion, that style and culture, that playoff style of hockey, is starting to set in here. I don't expect to have the same regular season success with this roster but they are building towards the playoffs with this style of play.

Long story short. This is the year they go for it. With this roster and this style, they have a shot. Round out the bottom 6 with another mean forward so Reaves can sit, get a proper 3C, and this team has something.

100% agree. The Leafs likely have a 4 year window here to win as many Cups as possible. Who cares what the rebuild looks like after that. Name a Cup winner, let alone a multiple Cup winner, that remained a contender years after their Cup win(s). I'm not sure it's ever happened in the cap era. Try to win now, and worry about rebuilding later. Now is not the time to be cautious.

Boston, they won in 2011 and only now seem to be falling off, and I'm still hesitant to say that they are falling off because It's Boston.

Stolarz, OEL, and Pats is good enough for this offseason imo.

Easily exceeds the peak Dubas haul for an offseason.

I think OEL is on par with Muzzin and we didn't need to trade picks to do it.

I thought about Boston, and admittedly they won in 2011 and then went to the finals in 2013 and 2019, which is impressive, but since 2019 they really haven't been a threat to win anything. Monty should have been fired after the first round loss to Florida. Boston should have won the Cup that season.

I like the team more now...just seems like a good organization and it has it's shit together.

Watching Penguins being pumped 6-0, that seems like an organization in free fall and the guy at the top doesn't have answers.

You know what's amazing? f Pittsburgh can beat Detroit in their next game they will be 7-9-2 and they could be in the #2 wildcard spot.

7-9-2, 2 games below 500 could get you the #2 wildcard spot right.

I know It's early but that tells you how gross the east is right now.

I don't know that I've ever seen it this mediocre before.

This team is doing soooo much better than last year.

Their record is tooooootally improved. The best start for a Leafs coach in decades. Where have I heard that before?

Oh yeah...

Lol... twenty percent of the season is over and the team has the exact same record as last year. The Captain is nowhere to be found battling yet another mysterious ailment. One of the washed up band-aid boy vets they signed in the offseason is already down with a serious injury.

Hakanpaa STILL hasn't played.

And this is what we call taking a step forward. Such a fantastic job Treliving has done. I'm totally convinced the team is better than last year. 👌

When the bar has been set to just making the playoffs anything beyond that is improvement.

I’m no Brad lover - but….

Thought this recent comment from Pelley was interesting. Encouraging to hear.

"I have no idea what happened over the last 10 years, (but) I know that culture, I know that chemistry is there (now). That (became clear) when I really observed (Leafs president) Brendan Shanahan and (GM) Brad Treliving, and I looked at the chemistry they had, and it was phenomenal. The chemistry wasn’t quite there with the previous head coach (Sheldon Keefe), so after the season we brought in Craig Berube to that triangle of chemistry.”

Sounds like Shanahan and Treliving weren’t exactly on the same page as Keefe last season. This year with Berube everyone is marching to the beat of the same drum.

HA! beat me to it. :thumbu:
